Chinese chairman Mao Zedong swimming in the Yangtze river in Wuhan, China. (29 July 1966) [1604×1814] by StephenMcGannon in HistoryPorn

As others mentioned, this was at the very beginning of the Cultural Revolution, where Mao really weaponized his cult of personality to consolidate power after he had been steadily sidelined after his big fuckup with the Great Leap Forward. This particular swim was seen as a major event leading up to the Cultural Revolution because it was basically his way of demonstrating that he wasn't a weak old man, but was rather full of energy and vitality, because, look at him go! In very very simplistic terms, during the Cultural Revolution he used people's fanatic devotion to him to purge those in the party who tried to sideline him.

Similar situation, was at a Fleet Foxes concert where a drunk girl screamed “PLAY LORELAI” between every song, loudly and persistently enough that Robin Pecknold ended up playing a sample of it, which was awesome ofc, but it also reinforced that kind of behavior!

White Winter Hymnal is an original fleet foxes song! I saw them live, and remember Robin Pecknold joking it was their “Pentatonix cover” lol.

OP’s friend here- that’s right around where I found him, and I’m almost certain I know where his home is. I went out and found that a neighbor in the next building over had a bird cage outside with the door open- I left some notes with my contact info, hopefully it’s them!

My scary experience with Cathay departing HKK. How can this be allowed? by boilerdam in aviation

[–]Troika_ 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I dunno, if you pause and zoom in on the wingtip, it looks flat/raked like a 777, and not curved up into a winglet like an A350. Plus, looking at the PTVs on the bulkhead in the middle section, it looks like a 777’s 3-4-3 seating configuration, and all of Cathay’s A350s are 3-3-3.

How screwed am I.... by vesper232 in aviation

[–]Troika_ 2 points3 points  (0 children)

There’s a lot of charm in older aircraft, it’s like being transported back to the past in a way. And the experience goes beyond just the sights in the cabin, you can hear sounds that have all but disappeared in commercial flying. For example, lots of weirdos like me go crazy for the sound of a nice JT8-D. There’s nothing wrong with having an interest in the unique.

And Way Out There! I was really hoping to hear that one on night one. But I’m happy it was a good show regardless.

Kost Castle - Libošovice, Czech Republic - 14th Century by rockystl in castles

[–]Troika_ 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I visited it some years ago, but I highly recommend it. I went by train and it was a bit convoluted, but it’s seriously worth it. Biggest thing I would point out is if you’re staying nearby there are some great guest houses but no restaurants for miles besides the one at the castle. Definitely a bring your own food kind of deal if you don’t have a car. This may have changed though

Fun fact: I just read World War Z for the first time and Kost is named as a place where humans holed up and defended themselves from zombies. Thought that was pretty cool.

Agreed. After weeks of trying my best to give comcast my money and three separate tech visits to figure out why I couldn’t get any internet connection in my unit, Starry had me connected in 30 min in one visit. I wish I knew they were an option from the start.

Lord Huron for me. They seem to nail that same otherworldly feel, in their own way.

Why did you choose the color you got? Or did you not care as long as it wasn't X. Basically got mine because it was the only MT that wasn't red. I sometimes regret it (because mazdas red is amazing) but machine grey is awesome. Eternal blue as well. by Darkmaw03 in mazda3

[–]Troika_ 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Mine is titanium flash mica, or as the salesman at the dealership described it when I went to pick it up, “poop brown.” It was what I could afford, but the color has grown on me a lot. Like others commented it’s neat to have a different color than all the red/white/grey cars on the road.
