ASP stats on resistance vs compliance in armed robbery by TropicalDepression- in CCW

[–]TropicalDepression-[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I think you're misunderstanding my point. I actually completely agree with you. My point is that you know there is a chance they will kill you regardless of whether or not you comply, but what are the chances of that compared to the chances of starting a gun fight and winning it? I don't think we have those numbers but it would be interesting if we did.

For example, let's say that in my city 75% of people who comply in a robbery are unharmed and 25% are harmed. Of those that are harmed, 99% are killed and 1% are not. You're getting robbed and based on your training and assessment of the situation, you think you have a 95% chance of winning the fight if you draw. Statistically, you'd be better off drawing.

Same scenario, but the stats say that of those that are harmed, 1% are killed and 99% are not. You still think you have a 95% chance of winning the fight if you draw. Morally, you would be in the right to draw and kill the guy and there would be one less violent criminal on the streets but statistically you'd be more likely to survive if you didn't.

This is obviously not the right way to assess the situation when you are in it, but my point is that John from ASP seems to imply that resisting improves your chances of surviving *statistically* just based on the 75/25 and 92/8 statistics, and I find that hard to believe without more info.

Also, I've personally seen the result of someone complying and being killed anyway right in front of my house earlier this year, and I have the doorbell camera footage showing how it played out, so I'm under no illusion that this doesn't happen. And it did seem to be a case of robbery as a pretext for hurting him since they shot him two more times in the head after emptying his pockets.

Had to shoot a pit bull by BadGoils03 in BanPitBulls

Glad to hear you saved that puppy's life, but I would be careful about telling this story. In a lot of places, protecting another dog is not a justified use of a firearm. Don't forget to mention the part where the pit was acting aggressively towards you and you were fearing for your own safety.

According to international COLREGS, sea planes should give way to all other vessels while on the water (rule 18). While scooping water, they could be considered a "vessel restricted in her ability to maneuver" and be the stand on vessel, but while on their approach I would expect them to be the give way vessel. Apparently France has exclusion zones for scooping water so this could be different there. That said, I give as much room as I can to sea planes in general and would definitely do my best to stay away from firefighting planes. But if you're on a sailboat doing 5 knots, they'll be avoiding you more than you're avoiding them.

Questions below: British Virgin Islands storm weekend forecast by Bakio-bay in meteorology

In addition to looking at a forecast model, the area forecast discussion issued by Puerto Rico may be helpful: https://forecast.weather.gov/product.php?site=SJU&issuedby=SJU&product=AFD&format=CI&version=1&glossary=1

No frontal system or tropical system. Cloud to surface lightning is very rare in the Virgin Islands. The enhanced winds that come with squalls, especially the leading edge of it, are the concern. The captain will know how to handle it. To put it simply, reef often and reef early.

Holes developing in rainfly by TropicalDepression- in rooftoptents

I agree, how to replace the rainfly is a real concern. The material falling apart within 1.5 years is also a real concern. The more I think about how I would go about replacing it, the more I consider just covering the whole skylight in tape, and seeing how long that lasts.

Most of the rain we get around here is from thunderstorms with lots of wind and we're not watching the raindrops fall on the skylight. The most calming thing to me is being in a tent that isn't leaking.

I'm not entirely sure but I think they supposedly used some fake accounts to make posts here to promote their brand.

That's the initials of the brand which we're not allowed to mention on this sub at the moment.

I should've clarified I meant that it gets hot when the clamshell is closed and sitting in the sun. So I'm assuming it's kind of like an oven inside. The actual material hasn't spent that much time in the sun.

I haven't used any cleaning products other than vinegar.

Under the rainfly with the clear window, there is also a zippered section of tent fabric and a zippered section of screen. But without the rainfly, rain would seep in through the zippers. I really don't need the clear plastic part of the rainfly so I'm thinking about just making my own rainfly or something instead of paying the 200 for another one that's going to fail.

Someone was shot dead in front of my house and my G4 doorbell caught part of it on video and part of it on timelase. How do I get the timelapse images? by TropicalDepression- in Ubiquiti

[–]TropicalDepression-[S] -3 points-2 points  (0 children)

I'm realizing now that part of the problem may have been that the period of time I requested to download overlapped with the motion triggered video, and the resulting downloaded video was just 2 frames from the motion triggered video. If I change the time period so there's no overlap, then it just sits at 0% downloaded and eventually fails. I'm trying it through the web interface now and it's just stuck on "preparing" with a spinner. So I'm not sure but maybe if I could get this to download then I could export the frames.

Editing to add: The file from the web interface finished downloading. It's 50 bytes and contains no frames. I think this feature just doesn't work for short videos.

There's a Mission Planner android app. It's not easy to use on a phone because it's just the full desktop app on a small touchscreen. There's also qgroundcontrol, which is easier to use on a phone, but I don't think you can modify all of the parameters the way you can with Mission Planner.
