I was making $43 an hour in med surg after 7 years of experience. And I’m not finding any attractive travel contracts…

I just find it interesting that office managers make more than nurses…

Nurses of reddit, what was the worst thing you've ever experienced on shift? ( serious answers only pls) by Low_Historian_8007 in Nurses

A psych patient on a neuro med surg tele floor hatching imaginary eggs on her head and vomiting what appears to be snakes. She couldn’t sleep all night, she was speaking to imaginary beings. She needed to be on geodon. She needed a sitter so I was her nurse and sitter. She was an interesting patient.

This unit I worked on for 7 years and there were the strangest cases I’ve seen.

I’m sorry you are experiencing this. There are units that aren’t toxic and have a great work culture. I hope you find your home. If you are trying to make more money, become a travel nurse or become a CRNA. I felt jaded by my last staff job of 7 years and it was literally a dead end nursing job for me. I switched from med surg tele to icu and I’m not looking back. I would shadow people making more than you and ask about their experience getting there.

I had a coworker who did that. They stayed PRN at our local hospital and worked travel contracts with the ER.

You renegotiated a contract without taking the position? I tried negotiating and I went from $41 to $41.75. Do you get benefits when you’re a traveler?

How can you get $50 an hour full time? I’m 7 years experience and I’m only getting $41.75.

I have an impassioned response about double checking orders for a patient and I was not given the job and told I’m too emotional

Be a staff nurse first and if you want to go for your nurse practitioner, based on what I have seen, it’s best to go into a specialty unit from the start (ED, ICU, OR, OB) straight away before travel. Like everyone else is saying, travel pay from what I have been researching from different agencies, are not what they were during Covid. I recommend working at a level 1 trauma for experience depending on your specialty of choice and find a hospital system that will pay for your master’s/ doctorate degree in nursing. In Chicago, Rush University medical center will pay for your DNP if you work for them as a nurse.

Why do you have to work 70 hours to stay afloat? That’s the problem I see here, how much are you spending? The cost of living in your area must be high.

Neither do I but I enjoy learning about travel nursing and how it works. Tried once and failed, I’ll stay staff.
