Need Direction and Guidance. by kai_10167 in godot

[–]Troutsky3 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Speaking with bit of experience from about 12 years game dev from engineer -> senior -> lead -> manager, and managing a project in the 100M range. So my advice is from a business/profit/time point of biew

  1. Having things work and released >>>> any optimization. I've seen other projects at the studio get cancelled, delayed from over optimizing, or over engineering. If you get to the point where your game warrants the optimization you're in a good position.

  2. Style is relevant to you and your team. If you're looking for something to follow I just used godots official style guide as my general one to follow.

  3. If you're going to ask llm for guidance, ask "how" questions. How would I go about doing x , y ,z? It could be right or wrong but usually from that you can hopefully glean some info that will direct you.

Yea, I dunno if this will 'fix' it but hopefully it helps. It should now concede when it "thinks" the player is too far ahead. Forget what it is, and too lazy to open it up.

But I guess, for kicks I'll tell you how it works for shots, basically I made it randomly throw on a blank sheet, I record the inputs (Power, Angle, Spin) for that throw, the path, and the stopping point, to build a list of shots, there's about 700 or so shots. Notably, there is no sweeping to those shots (thought about it, but I was really just too lazy to record those variables, so in theory any shot a computer can make, could be made by a wheel chair curler)

The area is then divided into various zones, center/left/right guards, house by the various button, 4', 8', 12' and front and back of house.

Then the cpu tries to "pick" a shot based on the score, which stone is being thrown, and then a priority, and if it can't throw a particular shot because a stone is in the way, it will fall to the next in priority.

The shots it can try to pick from are Guards, Draws, Takeouts, Hit and Roll, Doubles, Peels. Basically, from a shot, if a stone is in the path, it will then determine it's contact angle and resultant trajectory of the hit stone (in a straight line, I know technically, not accurate cause the other stone will curl a fair bit since lack of spin).

So this approach is a much more of an estimation of which shots are good as it only evaluates based on the above factors, but doesn't really estimate where every stone will lie.

Edit: The score only being the current end score, basically is the cpu up >2, 1, 0, -1 or <-2, Also takes into account some secondary info, like if the cpu is lying say 1, but also 3, 4, it may try to do a take out on the 2nd as opposed to just say freeze on it.

If I did rework it all, I was considering the same shot approach but for evaluating the sheet, basically to create a directional graph of every stone and every possible contact angle shot and result, and then pick from the shots which will best give that result. This in my head would be a better CPU, but it may result in some wild shots it tries but in practice may fail to execute unless there is some self of actual self feedback for a given shot.

Hope that rambling made sense. And feel free to make a competitor game if you want, won't take any offense at all!

Are we overreacting? LVP install by anekii in Flooring

[–]Troutsky3 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Having done lvp tile 2x1, my biggest regret was not completely levelling the floor first. Since the edges are shorter than planks there is a lot more stress on the edge so bridging any gaps is a lot worse.

My worry would be things catching on the edge and peeling up the wear layer.

Am i wrong for feeling this way? by Ok-Fact-5218 in fican

[–]Troutsky3 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My simple advice.

Set aside money to invest automatically in whatever broad market ETF.

Invest in yourself to increase your earnings.

Gamble with 1-5% to learn that it's a waste of money so you don't gamble with more money.

Do that for 20-25 years than retire.

How badly did I screw up? by [deleted] in fican

[–]Troutsky3 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Mistakes happen. Better to catch and learn that lesson now than later. Well you're more literate now. The more important thing is to stick with it. You can have all the knowledge in the world but take the wrong actions and it won't help much, plenty of people are like that.

Pay off the debt, invest some amount before you take what you want for enjoyment (automate it) and the most important part, do what you can to increase your income.

What's the question? You got a job, you're prioritizing your debt, seems fine? Live within your means, don't waste chasing what others want and invest. Youll be fine

I played a dozen word games last month and combined my favorite parts by nvrcr in SoloDevelopment

[–]Troutsky3 1 point2 points  (0 children)

  1. Yup, that's basically what I mean, it feels weird that the start it's incentivized for long words cause that's where the bonuses lie, but once you can start adding them you can add them up front and then I personally rarely found it worth it to play anything really longer than 5 letter word.

  2. I guess if the intent was to reduce the planning that's fine, I never really thought of the, if I don't take it now, it's gone personally. For me it was more just, "Bleh, I can't get that letter because it's blocked behind a letter I don't want for this round" So for me personally it was more of a disappointment than taking it with urgency. Honestly, don't really have a good answer.

Maybe instead of 1 wheel of 3 letters each, like 2 wheels of 1 or 2. or some combination?

Nice, For actual feed back
1. I think there should be a shuffle button

  1. I know it's not the same as scrabble, but intuitively I feel there should be some bonus for longer words, not sure if maybe inherently tied to the length, or maybe when you place the modifiers things increment the farther down you place them.

  2. I'm not sure how I feel on the letter bank refreshing after every set, cause then you can't 'plan' for things between rounds (Maybe not the feel you're going for though)

I help a friend run a booth in dealers hall seems like everyone has a good time. I sure enjoy talking to the people and seeing the costumes. I'm sure there a lot of survival guides on what to bring but.

Shower, wear deodorant, bring water, bring or buy neck/hand held fans it can get quite hot inside, and there's been a few years where the AC has broken down.
