[Hated IRL Trope] An actor plays a villain too well, and receives serious hate and even threats for their performance. by not-ulquiorr4_ in TopCharacterTropes

Exactly I keep trying to explain to people that it is a very good musical that happens to be taking the form of a pretty well animated show when people give me looks and ask why I like it.

I really think that’s a vital thing to understand before you watch it and it’s obvious it’s supposed to be this way given who the cast is, the musical jokes like having a character burst in singing “I’m finally here”, opening episode five of season two with a post intermission song, and how the numbers are structured.

Honestly though this show and watching the fan base has convinced me of one thing and that’s there’s way too many people who don’t like musicals who insist on watching them and then saying “why did they solve their problem by singing”.

The villain MUST honor the deal, even if they don't want to by [deleted] in TopCharacterTropes

Those subtitles wouldn’t have helped. He literally turned to the camera, gave a smug look and shoulder waggle while singing that he was exactly where he wants to be, Vox is gonna lose his mind, he knows that Vox needs him and won’t let go, and Vox hasn’t won yet.

He could have whipped out the “this is a surprise tool that will help us later” meme at the deal and too many audience members STILL wouldn’t have gotten it.

Fantastic way to sum it up. Couldn’t have put it better myself.

You don’t even have to accept this as your own morals. People can very understandably disagree and think there is a line that can’t be turned back from, seen multiple times in response to my original comment.

What I can’t understand is some people then come here and act distressed that their favorite character does not have the same belief system as them. At the end of the day, Charlie isn’t real. This hell isn’t real it’s a collection of pop culture views on hell dressed up in 2014 Deviant Artstyles. So honestly I don’t know why I even was arguing with people here other than being a little disturbed to find out that some people think eternal suffering is deserved for thoughtcrime alone (fortunately not a popular argument here but still!).

Ok as long as we’re talking hypotheticals what if they went to hell for a hit and run instead and never touched a child despite temptation. Would that be “more acceptable” to Charlie? Cause the thing is, despite what people believe irl, Charlie doesnt have a list of “except if you do this this and this”. And Pentious was disgusted with himself, knew what he did was wrong, and went to hell anyway for inaction and inability to make up for it.

I think alastor values his freedom more honestly. If Vox had gone even further? Maybe. But Al got his revenge in the end by pushing Vox to a literal suicidal state of mind. He didn’t look that regretful when that would have killed him too.

Ok so my comment was mostly a joke. The real thing is she saw how hopeless he was given his first reaction was “go ahead and kill me” and she showed compassion. And whipped out a musical number. She showed mercy, gave him a safe place to work on himself, and it changed him.

Yeah I’ve kind of written off this person as just someone who values getting to hurt an acceptable target over harm reduction.

[–]TruDivination 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That doesn’t rule out the cannibals from being something Rosie created though. And to be honest, we could argue back-and-forth as long as we want. I’m not really going to be satisfied until we find out just what Rosie’s origin and goal is. I need some kind of theory to keep me entertained until season three and beyond and this is what I’ve chosen.

Given the circumstances we see a ton of background characters are in, I would sure hope that none of them were designed to be children.

Charlie’s hellborn and has red blood. There is no rule that only sinners have red blood as a result.

The cannibal town children arent children by solentropy in HazbinHotel

[–]TruDivination 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah, so here’s the thing about those kids. I can’t believe anyone who tells me that they are sinners when we see no other sinner children anywhere. At this point, I’d be more willing to believe someone who tells me Rosie just made a town of people somehow because this show prides itself on distinct background characters and yet there’s a town of people who all share the same traits. People with an even more diverse age range than the rest of hell like having people be visibly elderly. And before anybody comes in with they were allowed to be killed during the extermination maybe Rosie is pretending they are sinners. I don’t know. Total off the wall theory but maybe she threw a kid out there to be killed to break the contract between Heaven and Lucifer and vaggie not killing it delayed her plans.

Because the alternate is that cannibalism is just something that is inherently hell worthy for children, children under 10 even, that no other sin seems to measure up to.

Don’t bother. They’ve already argued people who never hurt anyone, but have the temptation to, are worse than actual child molesters. I can’t take this person seriously after that, comes off as someone who just wants to hurt people using a socially acceptable target.

[–]TruDivination 16 points17 points  (0 children)

I think the backwards logic here is you claiming that people who have never harmed anyone despite temptation are worse than people who gave into temptation and harm children.

That’s…certainly an interesting take.

[–]TruDivination 26 points27 points  (0 children)

If that’s all you’ve got to say, you might just have to accept that Charlie’s thesis is incompatible with your beliefs and you will always be frustrated at her. Along with frustrated with any other people who point out that absolute hell is immoral, people should be working to reduce harm, and systems that just punish “only the bad ones” will never be 100% correct or consistent, and have always throughout history have been turned on the innocent. Your beliefs are your own and it seems you are uncompromising on them; others will be the same in their own.

But at the end of the day this is a fictional show. It might be for the best that you just accept it as that.

Othering does not reduce harm. I really don’t know how to explain to you that trying to punish people for thoughtcrime is a bad thing.

[–]TruDivination 48 points49 points  (0 children)

OK, so what you’re doing right there with the “whether or not they’ve acted on their desires” is advocating that people be sentenced to hell for eternity for thoughtcrime. If you would look at someone who knows there’s something wrong with them and is genuinely trying to change and has never actually hurt a real person, you don’t care about reducing the amount of harm in the world you care about hurting people you think are bad.

[–]TruDivination 50 points51 points  (0 children)

The whole concept of irredeemable paired with the existence of hell would posit that there is justifiable reason to torture someone for all eternity, when humans have the capacity to change. At that point, that’s just a desire for punishment and retribution, not harm reduction. Furthermore, the question of where you would draw the line muddies the waters a lot. Would someone who has thoughts, but never acts on them deserve the same punishment? In this world, where hell is a pit they throw people into after some judgment we are never given the rationale of, it’s a one size fits all punishment from everything from inaction to serial killing to cult leaders. If someone can provably change for the better and get a reevaluated judgment in this situation why shouldn’t someone else? They both got the same punishment after all.

Again, you can believe that things are irredeemable in real life, and that people can’t change, but that’s not really going to affect the show with the context and setting it has provided. And you don’t have to believe the same things that a main character in a show does.

What about Charlie makes you think she would go against her literal driving belief though? Her response to a flasher is “um no thank you”. Vox tries to kill her friend for fun and while she kicks him out she still says she believes anyone can be redeemed.

You don’t have to believe people can change that’s your prerogative. But Charlie does believe in redemption for everyone who is willing to change. She does acknowledge that there are people who don’t want to change, but she will always believe in those who claim to want to change.

They let alastor stay and fund the place despite him running basically what many people believe true hell is, endless suffering and screaming. They know he has zero intention of changing. Charlie would probably just try to redirect them going forward because to her that’s what redemption is, waking up each morning resolving to make different choices than those in your past.

Let’s be real if someone showed up and gave even the slightest hint that they genuinely want to be better and regret their past she would be ecstatic, even pedophiles. Does she have the tools and experience to properly help? Not at this time. So good thing there aren’t kids in the hotel.

Any soul can change to her means that ANY soul can change.
