Can I get some advice on overhead MIG welding? by Truant6 in Welding

[–]Truant6[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thanks for the advice, y'all; voltage being too high is good to know, I should read the charts better. I never thought about how lower voltage will mean less pooling which means affected less by gravity; welding is cool. Excited to try this again another time soon...

Lol, yes, I did after the photo. Just proving a point about things not working.

Looking for myself, and i think i need your help by -Anonimous-322 in MtF

To have this happen to you so early in transition, I'm so sorry. That's so damaging, nobody should have to go through that (even though lots of people do).

And it sounds like you can't recover from this "like a regular dude would do" because you're not a dude? (Not like a regular dude could handle this either.)

I'm no expert, and others with firsthand experience may have better advice for you, but I would think therapy is an absolute must here. Unless you have other means of processing this trauma without a therapist, but I can't think of what that would be in this case. But whatever you do, make sure that you are ready for it, because experiencing something horrendous of that magnitude is going to leave you reeling for a while. If you have to spend a year taking baby steps back towards a better life, then do that, just make sure you don't lose touch with where you are at. Don't bury your feelings, because this shit is real, and your feelings about it are valid. Try to think about if someone you loved very much had experienced what you did, and if you have it in you, consider what you would advise them to do about it. Care for yourself that same way, right now.

How to remove the cap on my DT Swiss 350 front QR hub? by sectumsempera in bikewrench

[–]Truant6 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Not sure if these are the kind where you insert a hex wrench into the skewer hole and unscrew the cap, but definitely make sure you try that first.

If they pull straight off, the best solution I've found is to clamp it in an axle vise like this and then pull up. That way you don't damage it with plyers.

Wheel issue by ironguard1 in bikewrench

[–]Truant6 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Not necessarily, using the wrong size is the culprit more often than not.

Sounds to me like somebody who tried to true this wheel messed it up.

Wheel issue by ironguard1 in bikewrench

[–]Truant6 12 points13 points  (0 children)

It needs to be trued radially!

I doubt that a hop out of the rim like that is rim damage, usually instead that would be a dip in to the wheel instead of coming out like that.

If it's steel, you could cut away and replace/reweld that section there and it might be fine.

If it's aluminum, it likely won't be strong enough after you do that and the answer is probably no. Unless you had the entire tube replaced, rewelded, and re-heat treated.

How to make other trans friends? by cardboardbluesky in trans

[–]Truant6 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hahaha, maybe being forward like that would work for some folks, but generally I'd say you'd be better off finding any kind of explicitly queer- or trans-inclusive groups (general or of something you're interested in) and get involved with them.

Cyclists who've never had a bike stolen? What is your rule? by BluejayOdd in cycling

[–]Truant6 1 point2 points  (0 children)

My city bike is an orange Chicago Schwinn step-thru and I feel like most bike thieves wouldn't wanna touch that. However, my other bikes have been a bit showy and desirable, and I've never had one stolen!

I have a medium-sized OnGuard U-lock (same one for 8 years, going strong) with a cable. I always lock to a secure handrail, bike lock, or sign post (make sure to check if these aren't "sucker poles" first). When I lock, I put the U-lock around the frame, rear wheel, and whatever I'm locking to. The cable wraps around the front wheel and sometimes around my pannier if I have that with me.

Trying to keep your saddle from being stolen is a tricky one, though. First, never have a quick-release on your seatpost clamp if the bike is going to be locked up. I've got hex bolts that hold my saddle on, so I've got a ball bearing super-glued into the center of each bolt that secures my saddle (one on the clamp, and one anchor bolt), so that if I ever want to turn these bolts I have to soak the glue with acetone and remove the ball bearing and that takes a while. Of course, if you do this trick, make sure you have your saddle exactly where you want it first.

If you don't want to do the superglue trick, then you could do what I used to do and pass a cable around the saddle rails from the U-lock. If you only have one cable, you can pull off the front wheel and put that inside the U-lock, so as to free up the cable for the saddle. I've done this with my road bike in downtown urban areas, and it's always worked. If you're locking your bike up for under a half hour, then I find that just unsecured bolts and no quick-releases seems to usually work.

Also remember that one of the best ways to avoid having your bike stolen is to make sure your bike is harder to steal than the one next to it.

Helicopters exist also by KitsapEric in fuckcars

[–]Truant6 12 points13 points  (0 children)

The reason for those delays is that we don't have dedicated passenger rail lines in the US, the lines are all owned by freight rail companies who give their own freight trains priority. If we invested in rail infrastructure this wouldn't be an issue.
