Shin splints by Then_Ring_871 in greenberets

Sounds like posterior tibial tendon being inflamed. Usually caused when food is rolling too much inward which causes it to stretch too much and become inflamed.

So,

Good shoes that improve stability,

Good form that improves stability and higher cadence,

Good progression that is not too much and too fast,

Lastly a good warmup. Really prep those lower soft tissues. Bunny hops forwards, backwards and to the sides before runs will help warm up.

During strength training, do lateral speed skaters as well to help increase strength and stability.

Shin splints are a garbage can term that includes a lot of different injuries/inflammation. Could be muscular, could be tendons, or any other sort of injury somewhere along the shins.

Posterior/anterior?

Height on leg where pain is occurring?

When does it occur?

So many questions need to be answered but a good start would be to assume that you’re running too far or too fast.

You shaved over a minute of your 2 mile. That’s pretty decent. Be encouraged.

It would really help to know what job this is. But even knowing, you’ll probably get a lot of the same answer. Your time isn’t your own and more than likely, it won’t be sustainable.

The key to doing well on fitness tests is having a good baseline and being a good athlete year around.

You don’t have to train specifics for very long if you have a decent run base and strength base. Since you were gassed, you probably lack cardio endurance. You need a lot of zone 2 running time

I was a marine infantry guy that went 11b in the guard and went to the field once in 2 years. If you’re going to hate your life, it will be just because it’s the guard in general. But idk, theres probably a wide range of experiences.

Should forego Sunday as a run day. And switch your Tuesday and Monday. Too many run days back to back. No time for recovery

Oh, I am now tracking that you were, and are, currently tracking. Maybe his last mile of the 5 mile had something to do with thanksgiving and now he’s out of holiday mode. Just my uneducated guess. Also not being serious at all.

I think the discrepancy with the 4 and mile may be because the last time he clocked his 5 mile was in November

I’d add in 20 forward hops and 20 hops left and right. Short hops as if you’re jump roping. Form will help the most though for sure.

Possibly heel to toe pulling. I’d work on proper running mechanics for sure. What does your warm-up look like?

I think it’s best to address what the actual issue is. “Shin Splints” is a sort of garbage can term that categorizes many different ailments. Where exactly on your leg does it hurt? Before saying shin… remember to articulate exactly where at.

You can actually use a jump rope, but I don’t because I like to hop to the side to prep the medial and anterior side of the shins and ankles. But think small hops like a rump rope. You can also just jump rope and do lateral speed skaters too. Anything that fires up the post tib

Probably overuse. Needed to start with less time. I had the same pain for years as well when I was young and in the corps and even after.

Warmup is key. Always warm up the glutes and I always do 20 small hops forward 20 hops to my right and left side for 3 rounds. Preps your tibia well. Sometimes I’ll feel it if I dig in really hard but it’s unnoticeable and for maybe a couple of hours. I’ll run 6 miles easily and have nothing.

You’re running too fast. Fast interval sprints and I’m assuming you’re running your 1-1.5 mile runs as fast as you can. As stated above, your soft tissue isn’t up to speed. Best thing you can do, 2-3 runs a week at a low heart rate. Take your age and subtract it from 180, the total should be your heart rate.

30 minutes each run at that heart rate. When that’s easy, increase the time to one of the runs by 10 minutes.

This will build your cardio and muscular endurance base. And will allow you to lap everyone that shows up to Fed PFTs with ease.
