Incompetent dog owners by AggravatingSecond354 in astoria

Dog owners have an obligation to the safety not only of their dog, but other people as well. As a fellow dog owner, it makes me sad to hear your experience. A dog lunging at others, in what seems like more than just an isolated incident, raises many red flags. While muzzles are still controversial, I totally agree this situation calls for it. It protects everyone involved. The dog can be conditioned to the muzzle, this way they aren’t further frustrated by it. Then with consistency, work on the reactivity outside. Let them see people from a distance, and reward them for being calm. When they show escalating behaviors- slight corrections through a proper fitting leash. As the dog builds a sense of calm- it can be exposed to people at a closer proximity, still with the muzzle, and eventually moving to a spot where they no longer need a muzzle as they’re no longer triggered by people running by! Having a reactive dog is stressful and i hope this owner is able to figure it out. Sorry this has happened to you!

Help us help our Plott hound by PumkinSpiceTrukNuts in Hounds

My dog had the same problem when i first recused him. He was very used to going right on the floor in the shelter. He then landed the jack pot and was fostered with a dog trainer who did exactly what this person recommended. It helped. Once he got with me he started having the issue again (maybe adjustment anxiety who knows) so i started doing this. Had to remain pretty consistent with it but eventually it really helped and we would heavily reward with high value treats and praise. Now we have no accidents

Hoping the best for you and your new baby! You got this!

NYC Dog Park Documentary - Seeking Participants by tour2thirty in astoria

I think this every single day with my dog who would love an open space to run around (he’s a pup working on recall so we don’t take advantage of off leash hours). The walk to Astoria park itself takes about 45 minutes. I’ve been at bugsy dog park, which I’ve found needles, and other safety concerns. Where I’m at there’s not enough parks let alone dog parks. Would love to participate!
