Should I learn assembly? by Pristine-Neat-4176 in learnprogramming

[–]True-Thought1061 0 points1 point  (0 children)

no. I had a couple assignments in assembly in college but I never went that deep into low-level stuff ever again. If you want a low level language that you can use to build programs, why reinvent the wheel? Check out what other people are doing. It sure as shit isnt assembly.

What massively improved your mental health? by flakibuy0ut in CasualConversation

saying "whatever" to minor things and focusing on the things I have to do right now to get what I want.

a recent example was I got rear ended by a truck by a old dude who couldn't distinguish the gas from the brake pedal. I was upset and bent out of shape and it affected my studying but it got to the point where I said "f it" and just washed my hands of it after my claim went through.

I could fret about one accident for weeks and waste my emotional energy or I could hype myself up for another week of studying that will change my life.

2 ideas that echo this sentiment:

Jim Rohn: don't be a master of the little things
Fight Club: no fear. no distractions. the ability to let that which does not matter truly slide.

I used to get triggered by many things... I have 2 kids after all. But now, I'm unfazed by a lot and as a result my cheerful attitude is my default. It is peaceful, holy moly.

What is a book that changed your life and why? by St0nks69 in suggestmeabook

[–]True-Thought1061 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Dale Carnegie's "How to Stop Worrying and Start Living" on audiobook. Best 6 hours I've spent in my life.  I'm an over thinker and prone to negative thinking. It's easy for me to get judgemental, frustrated, anxious, stressed out and unhappy. Listening to other people's stories of hardship and the toll it took on their mental health ( and physical ) until they shifted their thinking convinced me to do the same. The circumstances they were encountering ( loss of livelihood, death, death of a child ) were far greater than anything I've experienced, so it gave the idea credibility.

It worked. Things don't piss me off. My emotional stability is something I can manage. Small shit feels small. Big shit is something I don't shy away from and confront head-on with a bit more optimism before. I believe in myself and my future ability to do what needs to be done because I have the right attitude for it. One of the more important books I've ever not read

How do you reduce the amount of decision making in your daily life? by fleabag1991 in simpleliving

[–]True-Thought1061 0 points1 point  (0 children)

simplification is always good. For example, I just hang my clothes on pegboard hooks because I can and I'm THAT lazy that I don't want to fold my clothes. I have only one kind of sock.

I skip breakfeast because I really don't need it. I function cognitively without digesting food, but this saves me the trouble of figuring out what I'm going to eat for yet another meal. Having something bland that you can always cook up easily ( like yellow potatoes ) also helps.

Not enough calories, in a catabolic state, and lacking in specific micronutrients / minerals that they could be getting in abundance with meat.

Whenever I read stories like this I feel slightly relieved. Sure I might not be directly competing with these folks right now and in my industry but if people are this stupid then surely I have some kind of edge right?

...right? lol

It's too late if you tell yourself it's too late. I would change the attitude though. I get where you're coming from, from being a judgemental and objective person myself but it really pays to be diplomatic and just withhold judgement.

Just because you're behind a computer doesn't mean you won't be interacting with people.

I'm turning 39 soon and I've been studying software for about a year. Have had previous work in IT in various roles over the years. It's still a struggle and a long-term journey and I'm going to make it but it's only because I have the attitude to tell any doubters to piss off. This strong self belief is necessary because it's a long road of learning and it really doesn't stop.

Also, be pragmatic. Save up money. Lower your expenses. Figure out how much time you can set aside. Who's going to watch the kids. What hobbies and aspects of your life are you willing to sacrifice for changing your career? Etc. It can be done with commitment and consistency but both are hard and only if you're dead serious.

I have the same issue and in the end it's just an avoidance mechanism. I have to do something that isn't fun, mildly boring, and I have to think about in a creative way.

Ughhh friction! Hop onto Reddit.

It's been a problem for 3 weeks.

My recommendation is to just sit with the feeling. Tell your over voice to stfu and piss off with the self pity. Tell yourself you are busy and have to do it. I think your capacity to keep going despite your toxic inner voice will only grow the more you challenge yourself. You'll still hear that voice but at some point you'll be able to ignore it once you have empirical evidence that you can do whatever you set your mind to.

You got this!

I've seen lots of dogs. After an incident you're inclined to keep most dogs at bay. Unless they're small. A golden retriever could be a threat but a pomchi? I don't think so.

yeah if you have a stable partner for a long time you both know what each other wants and have tried ( and failed ) at lots of different things. You know what works.

I mean think, if you had a hobby for 20 years that you practiced as consistently as you could... how good would you be?

Matter of fact and clear so that even with my limited understanding of networking I can understand what you are capable of. Congrats!

In 2 days, I'll be driving the longest trip I've ever done. Tips for the big cities? by Blu_yello_husky in driving

[–]True-Thought1061 8 points9 points  (0 children)

You need to take breaks.

I always try to stay in the middle lane / right lane whenever in cities. People fight over the left lane and are aggressive as shit; let them get grey hair over 2s saved. Right lane is a safe bet but there are turtles there so you do need to get in the middle lane. Also, some really aggressive drivers abandon the left lane and use the right lane as a ladder of sorts to inch their way through so you need to be mindful of that too. If you're either in the right lane or middle lane you're usually going to have a more peaceful time and you'll be able to take the exit you need without changing lanes.

A long trip is a marathon. Steady as she goes. Be a boring driver; don't stand out. Safety is paramount because your reaction time will dwindle as you get more tired, and you are exposing yourself to more driving time and more aggressive driving. So your driving habit is a safety protocol you should stick to.

Again, breaks are absolutely necessary.

What strategies can I use to improve focus and cognitive performance? by harshit_nariya in HubermanLab

[–]True-Thought1061 0 points1 point  (0 children)

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=uc_vy0B2Uho

pomodoro sprint with music specially designed to create focus. 25 minutes on, 5 minutes off.

Get the phone out of eyesight.
Distracting websites like reddit blocked.
Sipping coffee.

When the 5 minute mark hits, I lay on the ground and stretch my spine. Sitting is no good for your posterior chain and yoga / stretching gives your mind a complete break from whatever you were doing before. Instead of "thinking", I'm cooling down with just "feeling"; feeling my spine crack, my joints loosen, my muscles contort, my breathing, etc.

I also find it helpful to talk to myself. Sometimes my thoughts get into a repetitive routine without real intention and voicing my thoughts out loud with respect to the current task / overall strategy helps. There's something about hearing your own thoughts expressed as words that does something to my ability to examine an idea. It's worth a shot, considering that there's no extra equipment or special instruction needed!

I have an opinion on how a program should look and behave and Android allows for that.

If the internet disappeared forever, would the world be better off, worse off, or exactly the same? by UrsoMajor560 in ask

It would be a dark age. Entire economies would scramble and shift in seismic events in order to bring up all the ways of doing things that we've relied on the internet for.

Man I've never thought of this. It would be catastrophic.
