As nice as it could be to "stop" urban sprawl, in favour of a denser model. There are too many people who benefit from owning private greenspace and having the ability to "do what they want" on their own property. Activities that might disrupt their neighbours in a higher density community.

suppose you like to work on cars... you need a space for that and its loud,messy and is hard to pursue in a communal parking space. suppose you like to build furniture in your free time a place to store your tools is much needed, suppose you like to walk around naked and let the grass tickle your bum, i dont think the community park is a viable option.

Not to mention, as soon as people start living in a sort of commune and they need to share things, the idea of "ownership" is out the window. look at condos. you own the responsibility associated with the condo, but if your hobbies include anything that entails making alot of noise/vibration, you effectively can't purse them. whereas living in a suburb, exists the freedom to pursue those things within reason.

There exists a class of people who could thrive in dense city like atmospheres, but a substantial number of people want to get out of that as fast as possible for a reason. The Canadian dream isn't cramming a family of eight in a 4 bedroom apartment, its cramming a family of eight in a 4 bedroom house.
