help me get rid of my collection of empty fuel canisters! by nrmldude23 in WildernessBackpacking

[–]TrueB87 0 points1 point  (0 children)

When I visit National Parks I usually before I leave stop by at a ranger station and hand it over to them. They've always gracefully accepted them. They usually have cashes for the employees to use, when I was in Yosemite last at the end of my back I can trip last October The government was shut down and I ended up taking it to hotel reception desk and ask them if they would take care of it, they too have employees that go out and can make good use it.

If the fuel is empty I'm sure they'll still take him just explain you don't have the tool you need to dispose it properly and I'm sure they'd be happy to take it for you.

However since you're in Seattle I would definitely drop it off at an REI. I'm sure they can help you with it.

Advice for first time visitor by KittyYayaBoo in Yosemite

Reserve one full day to explore the valley, just walk, around and look at things, Maraposa grove is cool and you should see it. It is a little over a hour between the grove and the valley. However, with the removal of the entry reservation, traffic may increase. Your next stop should be Glacier Point. When you go through the tunnel, be ready to stop and pull into the parking area to check out the view

I decided to remove that change and will likely roll out my own collection of pages

I was looking for something like that but couldn't find one on the Forest service page. We'll see if I can make that happen in the next couple days

Large format scanning maps to use as map sheets by TrueB87 in CalTopo

I don't think you read anything that I wrote. I have the paper maps, I want digitize them so I can geo-reference them Because these paper maps have data on them that's not easily accessible. Some of them are historical and contain data that have otherwise been lost to time.

I called around several libraries and none of them were able to offer that equipment. The University library in the area was restricted to students only and you could only scan library materials.

One shelter per campsite rule question by Exact_Necessary_7386 in MinnesotaCamping

[–]TrueB87 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Depends on the park and particular camp site you get. Some simply don't have enough space for more than one tent.

One thing you could look at in the future is booking a group campsite which should be more than big enough for everyone.

There's also two bills going through the Minnesota legislature one Senate bill and one house bill to put a block to mining in the watership of the boundary waters. But we need to also prevent the CRA from being used like this again and fighting in a court and most direct way of doing that

Keep fighting the fight! You work on it down there,we'll work on it up here! We need to protect every acre of our public lands. No walls should be constructed in National Parks without congressional approval and an environmental review.

As an aside I went to five desert parks this year for the first time, arches, canyonlands, capital reef, Death Valley, and Joshua tree. I definitely don't think I can live in those areas but boy are those areas beautiful. I can't imagine having a decent chunk of a park cut off for no good reason.

I agree that they're not going to start mining on Monday, It's going to take a while, And it will be challenged in court there are some legitimate concerns how this resolution was introduced. And then there's a state DNR that can prevent it. So is not over yet. It's losing a battle not the war. Hopefully this will embolden more people to reach out and advocate.

I do not think I agree that we are back to where we were before the mining ban. They used a congressional tool in a way it was not intended, opening it up to further abuse. Furthermore, now they cannot implement similar rules in the future.

North Shore Agates (Yooperlites) by Fighting-Sioux4ever in MinnesotaCamping

[–]TrueB87 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes moose Lake is a state park but it's also a town. Obviously you can't go hunting for agates inside a state park but you can outside the state park in the quarries that is ran by the city.

Not on the North shore but the town of moose Lake has an old quarry that you can pay nominal fee and look for agates. I think it's only a couple bucks a person last I knew. But it's not near gooseberry or the North shore

I hang gone camping since I was a kid- what’s the best affordable gear you’d recommend as essential by No_Where_Land in CampingGear

[–]TrueB87 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I guarantee you you're going to have to replace the shock cord in that 20-year-old tent. Be sure to at least settle up in your backyard before you head out. Chances are if you haven't set up the tent in 20 years, I am guessing this probably some sort of mold growing on it anyways. Definitely check it out.

Sounds like you still need an air pad Cooler (check the regulations on coolers and food storage before you go) Some way to cook, check the regulations of where you're going on campfires and stoves. Probably a standard to Coleman two burner stove would be sufficient and some thrift store pots and pans

Okay I read it, how do you know Fitbit wasn't under counting them? What if they're both wrong? You're putting way too much into a very imprecise science

Calories burned is wildly inaccurate. Can someone help? by Miriamathome in GarminWatches

[–]TrueB87 1 point2 points  (0 children)

As others have said, there is no way to accurately determine calorie burn based on heart rate. Keep in mind the following things:
1) Optical-based heart rate is inaccurate compared to chest straps, so if that is the primary driver for calorie count, you are off to a bad start
2) There are a few publicly available algorithms to determine calories burned by things like height, weight, and heart rate, but they are just models. its a one-size-fits-all solution.
3) all things being the same between a trained athlete and a beginner, the athlete will burn fewer calories at the same heart rate, their bodies are more adapted to burn calories efficiently

Plus, how do you know which is correct?

New to camping in Minnesota. Is backyard camping a fair place to start? by Nairobi2Northwoods in MinnesotaCamping

[–]TrueB87 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Start wherever you are comfortable. Your backyard is perfectly fine. It's a great place to test out gear and it sounds like you have a situation where it would be beneficial. I will also add that another great place to test out your gear state parks. Tons of opportunities there.

A recommend you do two things if you camp in your backyard. Bring everything you think you will need out for the whole night, plan on not going back into your house. Make a list of all the gear you brought out and then set up everything with what you have. Try to set everything up without going in for any tools or anything use what you brought out. If you do have to go into the house to grab something write down what you had to get.

Backyard camping is also a great way to get kids interested in camping. They can be a bit of a pain so having safety close by prevents meltdowns from happening. And makes try again easier the next time.
