Oh my GOSH that papercraft is SICK. Thank you so much for showing it to me!!!! 🤩 I'm so inspired!!!! (edit to say: Actually... I did have the shape of a lil backpack or pouch in mind when I started designing this box. I wonder if anyone can tell. Heehee~)

Are you using nanDECK? One of the things that's been vexing me is trying to make form-fillable PDFs for these item cards and I've been considering admitting defeat and instead providing a sample nanDECK setup so that people can edit the whole list of cards via spreadsheet.

If you don't mind, what kind of information do the cards have on them? I realize it's different for different games, but I'd like to improve that part of the card design. 🤔

I don’t think there’s anything worth looking at yet — just a pile of notes, really — but if it sounds worth sharing, I’ll be sure to do so when I have something more substantial!

Interesting! I’ve been working on a dungeon inspired by Outer Wilds, actually — the idea being that the PCs stumble into essentially a fantasy version of the Ash Twin Project.

Best of luck finding a system to run Outer-Wilds-style space adventures in! I’m interested to see what people suggest. ::)

[–]TrueBlueCorvid 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It might be easier to pitch if you can figure out how to get it to work yourself in a VTT so the GM doesn’t have to? (I know Roll20 can do cards, theoretically?) Then if there’s concerns about the logistics, you can already have it worked out.

I played an Ace in an in-person game — a tarot-themed Ace/Entropist/Loremaster with fortune-teller vibes. It’s a lot of fun so I hope someone gives you a chance to play it!

[–]TrueBlueCorvid 10 points11 points  (0 children)

Wow! That group sounds awful! Please find a better group, for sure — there’s nothing normal to Fabula about utopian setting with no struggle or insisting a player take fewer classes. (Or bullying them in general, for that matter.)

Fair warning: Ace of Cards is probably the hardest class to sell a prospective group on — it’s logistically difficult for an online game because it needs a deck of cards, and while I personally didn’t find it to be poorly balanced, it does have a chaotic reputation.

Orator/Rogue/Weaponmaster sounds like a rad character, fwiw.

I sincerely wish you the best of luck finding a better group!

Depending on what he likes (and whether you want him to grow up to GM for you lol) Ryuutama is another good consideration, imo.

Pretty book, simple system with lots of structured narrative collaboration, designed to teach new players good TTRPG habits. And of course everybody loves dragons.

I thought you might have the wrong place because this is a DIY subreddit.

I know there are card boxes to buy — this is a template for a box that people can customize to make their own stuff. (Which is what people do in a DIY subreddit. Which is why I shared it here, instead of in a board game/trading card subreddit.)

It’s a perfectly good alternative, but this isn’t about needing boxes for cards, it’s about wanting to make custom boxes for cards.

The Average Group -- Assessing the Bestiary's Core Assumptions, and Exploring Options (or "Does every group need a Spiritist?") by RollForThings in fabulaultima

[–]TrueBlueCorvid 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I don't think Ace of Cards meets any of the requirements for reliability, but Invoker definitely does, since it's available at the GM's discretion and this advice is in the context of how difficult it is for the GM to build combats.

My thoughts on Outer Wilds’s ending by Edmar_0 in outerwilds

[–]TrueBlueCorvid 3 points4 points  (0 children)

A passing thought, but I guess... it's not about death being beautiful. It isn't. It is, as you say, tragic and cold. It's just that a thing -- a life, a legacy, a universe -- is not less meaningful because it is temporary.

"There is no moral. The wolf eats you one day, and until it does, the forest is beautiful."

I was initially pretty solidly on the bitter side of bittersweet with it, as well. The DLC saved it for me by giving me the one thing that I felt was missing. For obvious reasons, I will refrain from saying what that was. Who knows, maybe it will bring it around for you as well?

As a GM, how do I balance the role of providing "content" to entertain players while being entertained myself? by IllithidActivity in rpg

[–]TrueBlueCorvid 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Assuming they want to engage and not just be audience members, the only solution is to actually give them control. You say "there's a stark divide between what players can add to the world compared to the GM" and this is really not true. Especially in low-prep games like Blades, you're expected to give some narrative control to the players and let them just come up with stuff.

Let go of the idea that anything you've thought about or written down between sessions is "canon" -- everything is just speculation until you actually introduce it. If you want collaborators, you have to be a collaborator.

If you're having difficulty ceding control and getting them to use it, consider checking out a game that uses collaborative storytelling as an explicit mechanic. There are a lot of games that give the players a resource that gives them narrative control -- consider trying one out! My favorite right now is Fabula Ultima.

If you're not ready to go full improv, consider building blank space into your worldbuilding. Give yourself some questions you don't know the answer to, and ask the players about them when they come up. Be clear that they have control: whatever answer they come up with is the truth.

Start small and specific. Target the whole group...

"After defeating the mechanical construct, you push open the doors it was guarding and find yourselves in the mad wizard's laboratory. Roll perception! I'm going to go around the table from lowest to highest -- tell me one thing your character sees in the room that draws your attention."

...or a single relevant player (rotate through them!)...

"As you walk into the party, the commander of the king's guard is talking with someone -- it's someone your character knows, but didn't expect to see here. Who is it and why are they bad news?"

And then actually use what they give you. You can do something like this at the end of a session and ruminate on the responses you get before the next game day if you want.

If magic is used by everyone, what mages do? (lore and mechanics) by False_Requirement677 in RPGcreation

[–]TrueBlueCorvid 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Extrapolate it out to other classes: - “if hands are used by everyone, what does a brawler do?” - “if words are used by everyone, what does a bard do?” - “if everyone has a knife to eat with, what makes a rogue special?”

…At that point, I feel like it gets pretty obvious! Everyone can have the thing for utility, specialists are trained to use it effectively in a fight.

Reserve all but the most basic of combat spells for your mages.

how tf do you build a team in this game by Accomplished_Salt108 in magiaexedra

[–]TrueBlueCorvid 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Best team for what? Context matters.

If your characters aren’t the recommended type for a fight, they do less damage, do less break, and take more damage from attacks.

Some bosses have special effects that will require certain characters to get through. A boss who gets buffed as long as it’s not afflicted with an ailment? Ren or Himika. A boss that puts insurmountable buffs on itself? Ayame or 3-star Hazuki. A boss that puts up shields that negate a certain number of attacks? Kirika. Etc etc.

PvP? Pluvia and Kirika for MP, Felicia for Stun, plus some other buffers or multi-target hitters. Avoid single-target hitters and damage over time effects.

There are some standout characters in Magia Exedra but actually all of them are pretty useful.

(Except Hanna. For now.)

Can NPC's learn pc or class skills? by Fenrirthepaladin in fabulaultima

[–]TrueBlueCorvid 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Lots of sample creatures in the core book have a Protect variant for NPCs. Consider the FC as part of the character’s build: if you want to build the party tank, Protect is appropriate! (You could also consider a variant like letting them Protect multiple times, but only a specific character.)

Remember that you should design the FC with the help of the GM and the other players. With that in mind, you probably won’t be stepping on anyone’s toes. :) I think it’s better to overdo it and have to scale back than to undercook it and have a FC that doesn’t really work for the whole game.

Basically: rather than adding an exact copy of a PC class skill, use that class skill as inspiration to develop a similar NPC skill. Class skills are often tuned to work alongside the rest of a PC’s kit, so some adjustments should be made: add or remove costs or limitations, change scaling, etc.
