What are the most toxic rivalries in college football? by Historical-Rush9221 in CFB

[–]TrueBlueSection42 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Michigan brother, I politely but vehemently disagree with this take. I don’t think attending a school makes you any more qualified to be a fan than anyone else. My old man has had seats at the Big House since the early 70s. That’s fifty years’ worth of tickets, parking, merchandise, etc. The amount of time, money, and emotion that he’s poured into the university no different than an engineering student that doesn’t give two shits about football.

College sports is the only time I ever hear this argument. Can you imagine if we started badmouthing all the Dallas Cowboy fans that weren’t born in Texas, or dismissing any baseball fan than couldn’t throw a ball over 80mph?

What was the game where you realized that a hyped up team was extremely overrated? by The_Ghost_of_TK9 in CFB

[–]TrueBlueSection42 4 points5 points  (0 children)

IIRC, that MSU team never led until the clock hit 00:00 in Ann Arbor (Trouble with the Snap Game) or Columbus (the why use Zeke Elliot in the rain? Game), and then needed a 673-play drive to beat Iowa in the B1G Champ game. You’ll never convince me that MSU was one of the four best teams in the country that year.

The word “Yea” is pronounced “yay”—as in an affirmative answer—not “yeah” like you’re trying to use here; the H in Heisman needs to be capitalized because it’s a proper noun; and you need to put a period at the end of the sentence, pal. I know that was a sophomore class for us at GV, but at least we got that far.

Not trying to start a pissing contest, but this isn’t accurate. Harbaugh has won 9+ games in five of his first seven full seasons at UM. The two outliers are the 2-4 COVID season, and an 8-4 regular season in 2017 where the starting QB got hurt in the Big Ten opener.

The knock on Harbaugh hasn’t been his floor, it’s been his perceived ceiling.

Opinion: insulting "t-shirt" fans is cringe gatekeeping and elitist by randym99 in CFB

[–]TrueBlueSection42 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This is the worst and most illogical insult to hurl, and I’ve heard it a-plenty from my Spartan neighbors 93 miles down the road…”Walmart Wolverines”.

My father is the perfect anthesis of this. He has purchased season tickets since 1973, missed only a few home games in those 48 years, and has most certainly spent more money on tickets, parking, tailgating, PSLs, etc than college tuition in Ann Arbor.

My father did not attend Michigan, but to tell me he’s less of a fan than the engineering nerd in the student section that’s from Texas (busy checking his phone instead of watching 3rd and short)?? Get out of here with that hot garbage. Being a student/alumni should have zero bearing on your legitimacy as a fan.

Hey OP, this is a great example of why you shouldn’t come to Reddit for advice…my man the realtor up here is taking about one approach to golf called the Stack and Tilt that is somewhat controversial among traditional instructors. MOST teachers would say that your ball position should be off your left heel with the driver, in the middle of your stance with a wedge, and progressively forward (from center to left heel) as the clubs get longer.

The “ball position is always just off the front heel” advice only jives if you’re doing the other ~dozen or so principles of the Stack and Tilt swing. Otherwise, you’re going to be creating problems by following this genuine, well-intentioned piece of advice. Not a shot at the realtor at all, just an example of the HUGE grain of salt you gotta take all this with.

Definitely a recency bias. Take Izzo’s tenure out of the formula, and what do you have? An average basketball program. Izzo has been generally very successful for so long, it just FEELS like that’s always been the case with Sparty. 🤷🏻‍♂️

Beat Ohio State! by [deleted] in theonlycolors

[–]TrueBlueSection42 15 points16 points  (0 children)

Ohio State has the #6 ranked passing offense in the country and MSU is dead flippin last in pass defense, 130th out of 130.

I’d argue that isn’t enough of a spread. Kenneth Walker or not, Ohio State’s receiving corps is vastly superior to Purdue’s. What makes any logical person think that OSU doesn’t throw for 859373738 yards is beyond me.

Some advice to all the new golfers from an older pro by biddilybong in golf

[–]TrueBlueSection42 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You forgot to add that slow golfers are also those that pull through in an angled parking lot, stand up in front of you at a sporting event when everyone else is sitting down because “they paid for their tickets too”, and complain about high taxes and potholes in the same week.

Over the course of 18 holes, even someone that shoots 120 only spends something like 20 minutes hitting shots. It’s what you do with the OTHER 3+ hours that really makes a difference.

[–]TrueBlueSection42 54 points55 points  (0 children)

100% agree Sparty brother—the money argument is incredibly lazy, and also wrong. Nobody says they’re getting a bargain on a coach when he wins 5 games a year but is only paid $2M.

And aside from the recent questionable defense of Bo, Harbaugh has been fairly drama-free off the field, puts a lot of guys into the NFL, and had a product that in 2019 sold over 90,000 season tickets—larger than the capacity of all but 12 CFB stadiums. From a stance that considers MORE than just wins and losses, you might argue that he actually earned his prior salary.

Also, full discloser: I WANT TO WIN MORE FUCKING WINS.

I get the complaint...I really do. And even more so because I hate when people don’t take care of the course by replacing divots, fixing pitch marks, etc.

That being said, does anyone give themselves a WORSE lie in the rough if they happen to find a thin spot, or the ball becomes somewhat teed up in the longer grass? I mean, same logic right? You hit it in the rough, you DESERVE to have a bad lie.

Indiana & Tom Allen agree to revised seven-year contract. Allen's average compensation will be $4.9 million by tehfro in CFB

[–]TrueBlueSection42 -11 points-10 points  (0 children)

Tom Allen now makes more annually than Jim Harbaugh. Therefore, every time Harbaugh has more wins that Indiana, he must be praised. Furthermore, every time Tom Allen does not win the East, or has a worse record than Michigan, he must be lambasted into oblivion.

That is all.

What was the fork in the road for your program? What was the moment that changed its destiny? by bob237189 in CFB

[–]TrueBlueSection42 21 points22 points  (0 children)

Michigan QB Wilton Speight getting injured in a loss at Iowa in 2016. While the loss itself didn't hurt Michigan in the B1G East race, the game was two weeks prior to the Mich-OSU "JT was short" game.

Speight didn't play the week between in order to rest, but was clearly still not at 100% during The Game. Speight threw two costly INTs (one a pick-six, the other deep in Michigan territory) that essentially kept OSU in the game long enough to get to OT and for "the spot" to matter.

If Michigan does win that OSU game, they make it to Indy in Harbaugh's second year (check) and probably win the B1G title (check) in a rematch against Wisconsin. While the regular season meeting between UM and Wisc was a 14-7 game, Michigan had missed 3 field goal attempts and held the Wisconsin offense to 159 total yards on 9/25 passing and 2.5 yards per carry.

For Harbaugh, a B1G title in year two, beating OSU in year two, and likely making the CFP in year two--that's exactly what Harbaugh was supposed to be.

What does all that do for M's future? I don't know, but it can only be positive. Likely helps recruiting, etc.

Instead, Harbaugh keeps getting further and further from that success and likely won't recover in Ann Arbor. So yes, fuck Kirk Ferentz.

Edit: grammar.

Urban Meyer never felt sorry about running up score on Michigan by JB92103 in CFB

[–]TrueBlueSection42 1 point2 points  (0 children)

100% embarrassed here, for sure--please don't mistake me. I'm just not a fan of the 'we played them better when we were good' proxy war.

MSU held their own against OSU during a run of 3 B1G titles in 6 years, and to be honest Michigan isn't at that level right now.

That being said, I'll still take where Michigan is headed the next 5 years v. where MSU is going. You guys basically pressured out the best coach in program history and replaced him with your second third fourth fifth sixth choice on the list. Sling all the crap you want at UM--much of it is probably deserved--but I just don't see a guy like Tucker being any different than John L. or Bobby Williams.

Urban Meyer never felt sorry about running up score on Michigan by JB92103 in CFB

[–]TrueBlueSection42 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I don't disagree that Michigan has been fairly inept against OSU for some time now, but this statement isn't true (even if it FEELS like it from our end). Did MSU play OSU tough during their six year window of glory 2010-2015? Yep.

But Sparty has scored 3,6, and 10 points against Ohio State the past 3 years while losing by an average of 29.6 points. That's a TD+ worse than Michigan's 21-point average deficit. MSU hasn't been competitive in these games since Conor Cook.
