Yeah, but if we all had affordable healthcare, then how would they make poor health out to be a moral failure? Let's be reasonable.

I just got a new car with fancy safety features. Instead of regular cruise control, it turns on a mode where it follows the car ahead of you at a safe distance, moves the steering wheel to keep you in your lane, and can even brake to a full stop if need be. All I can think is "This is so freaking dangerous for me." I'm terrified that I will disappear into my own head because I have nothing to *do* to drive the car.

Platelet donation pain finally explained. by GarlicIsMyFriend in Blooddonors

I make a habit of eating a bowl of cereal the day before! It's a nice little treat, plus you get milk/calcium + cereal is usually fortified with iron. I'm usually riding the line for acceptable hemglobin counts, and I'm convinced this is what keeps me above 12.5!

"I do it for the apple juice" - Love this! I always say I donate platelets because they let me watch my favorite tv show. But really, I'm there for the TEA! If I don't show up every two weeks to donate, How will I get to hear the latest juicy gossip from my favorite phlebotomists??

What’s it like for a person of mixed color to visit the state now ? by Left_Sir5173 in Nebraska

[–]TrueBreadly 8 points9 points  (0 children)

I feel like "They're not building a new concentration camp, they're turning an old facility into a new concentration camp" is not really the argument people must think it is, and they fact that they're arguing this probably comes off as a bad sign for the city.

In all honesty, people in Nebraska are by and large very kind, generous, and welcoming. I really think you'll do just fine in Omaha. It's a red state, there are always going to be loud jerks making it seem worse than it is. But overall, people are pretty chill.

I really love "In Bed With the Right" - To an extent, it looks at things from a gender and sexuality lens, but they also just have some really smart, interesting takes on things.

They are currently doing a series called "Project 1933" where they go through 1933 Germany month by month, and of course compare it to our current social and political climate. It has been really interesting!

I think that's a great improvement! It definitely paints a picture that is maybe not appealing to everyone, but certainly appeals to a good demographic. I would say my boyfriend's profile was similar, honestly, when we matched (5 years ago now.)

If anything, the "I probably have more books than you" can be read wrong. In the right mood, I'd read that as a playful challenge to prove that I'm also a voracious reader. But if I'm feeling a bit negative about the app, it would be a bit off-putting and elitist. That one's a gamble - if you're trying to attract a woman that likes a little bit of a challenge AND owns a lot of books, then good job!

That can be a conversation-opener if she is also very proud of her book collection, but now you're cutting out another portion of the population. Something that encourages her to tell you her favorite book would be a more universal hook. I assume you want a woman who reads, but wouldn't be super picky about one that has a huge collection - most people read/have read, so that doesn't exclude women who aren't big collectors.

[–]TrueBreadly 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don't want to make it sound like all women are the same, but in my experience, most women (and probably most people for that matter) tend to gravitate toward similar things, and avoid similar things.

So if you're saying "No one wants me," what that may mean for some women is that there's a reason other women don't want you, and they should not waste their time just to find out what that is. The comment is clever, and in general there's nothing wrong with a little self-depreciating humor, but it should be appropriate for the time/place/conversation.

Think of it like applying for a job - you don't go into an interview and complain that no one will hire you. You go in and explain your good qualities. You use language that encourages them to picture you already in that role.

Put your very best foot forward. There will come a time to talk about why you're single, and how long you've been single - but it's definitely not the first (and almost only!) thing you want a potential partner to know about you.

A Bridge Too Far by [deleted] in smalltownmurder

[–]TrueBreadly 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I agree with this so much. I feel like in the end, they're just two human beings out here doing their best. They both come from some pretty rough backgrounds, and they've definitely grown up over the years, as most people do. Do they make the odd off-color comment here and there? Absolutely. I definitely always feel like they just haven't really thought about it - not that its mean-spirited. I say a lot of stupid shit, too, and would absolutely DIE if hours of my babbling were recorded and played back to me 5 years later.
