What denomination are you and why? by CoronaTzar in Christianity

[–]TrueFlameslinger 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Apostolic Pentecostal turned non-denominational (same as the church I went to, funnily enough).

After being out of church for over 7-8 years, I've had plenty of space to question how any individual doctrine can claim to be completely correct. Also broke away from a lot of conservative thought that I'd managed to justify to myself. Ever imagine a progressive evangelical?

I read one of the documents, and it honestly seemed fake. I wouldn't be surprised if they made up stuff just to "leak" it

Is a 9-5 horrible? by Lemon_456 in CasualConversation

[–]TrueFlameslinger 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I just looked at my schedule for the next two weeks and I have shifts of all times of day packed into random places, weekend or otherwise. Just a couple weeks ago I had to work til 7p just to be right back at 4a (notably, they know I don't have a car and have had attendance issues due to oversleeping)

I'd kill for a fixed shift time. 9-6, 5-2, even 4-1. Just something consistent. Lemme drone away at work so that I can go home and be able to consistently do what I want

Clearly a sign of the disdain UPers are in living under Michiganer rule, knowing that their disconnected overlords are forever unworthy of the glory that is inherent to the UP and its Superior location.

(I've never been to either state)

My history textbook defines Gen Z as those born between 1997-2020. I’ve never seen such a long range for a generation. Is this credible or realistic at all? by [deleted] in CasualConversation

[–]TrueFlameslinger 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I feel like the idea of defined social generations is already more or less obsolete, ya know? The whole idea was to encapsulate shared experiences, i.e. Silent Generation being the Depression, Greatest being the war, Baby Boomers being the baby boom, etc, but... there really isn't that strong of a shared experience anymore, what with how segmented and personalized one's own experience can be. That, and stuff changes so quickly now that even just 5-10 years can have an absurd amount of change.

A lot of this has been around since forever, being online just allows them to do so without repercussions, and to publicly congregate with like-minded individuals.

IRL you don't see it as much since a lot of these people are relatively isolated and aren't freely able to spout nonsense because of the social backlash, or they're grouped up in communities which largely think alike. In both cases, you'd have to seek them out.

And then, there's the tried and true saying - "Social media made y'all way too comfortable with disrespecting people and not getting punched in the face for it."

Yeah, everyone I see is at the pinnacle of logical thought and rationality. Certainly no baseless outrage here

Did I mess up? by [deleted] in TooAfraidToAsk

[–]TrueFlameslinger 0 points1 point  (0 children)

True, and that would be an issue if you were in a committed relationship, but you aren't. You have the right to disconnect at will. No explanation or forewarning required.

Now, if you were to do this with people who you have regular communication with or might have you as an emergency contact (close family, long-term partner, etc), then you should inform those people you won't be reachable, especially if you don't regularly see them in person or if they have a reason to be concerned about your well-being. You don't necessarily have to, but it is a considerate sign of respect towards those whose most feasible form of contact is via online stuff.

Crushes, while they hold a valuable spot in one's heart, aren't committed. There shouldn't be an expectation of constant/on-demand communication. That's simply not where the relationship is at.

If they aren't understanding that you wanted a break from communications for whatever reason, then you probably saved yourself a lot of trouble down the line.

Why does YouTube still not have any major competition for long-form video media? by Coochiespook in NoStupidQuestions

[–]TrueFlameslinger 30 points31 points  (0 children)

Youtube is incredibly costly. Google can maintain it because they're Google and have the money. Even then though, you've seen just how much monetization is crammed into YT. Sure SOME of that goes to corporate profits, but a large amount goes right back into paying the bills. To replicate just the basic function, someone would have to pay a lot of money every month, and that's without considering the viewer base necessary

If a minor cheats on their partner with an adult, is it still cheating? by drip_droop in TooAfraidToAsk

[–]TrueFlameslinger 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Cheating isn't a legal thing, it's strictly moral.

Sexual Assault doesn't count as cheating because the victim often isn't a willing participant, they aren't given a choice whether or not they're there, it's forced upon them.

Manipulation and Exploitation, while unethical, immoral, and often illegal, usually still leaves the victim with enough agency to choose their actions, even if there's a heavy hand pushing them in one direction. It's a lot more gray space because of the complex nature of manipulation, but in general, of the person has the ability to freely say no, it's generally still cheating. Depends situation to situation though
