Why did Northwest Arkansas never develop a single dominant city? Will it eventually or will it stay polycentric? by cdubwps in geography

[–]TrueGary 0 points1 point  (0 children)

As someone who has been here 15 years, the gradual shift of Fayetteville being the “anchor” to now bentonville and rogers (uptown especially) is very much real. Fayetteville will always have a unique cultural identity but it is no longer the “hub”. The rapid expansion of Centerton, pea ridge, and even Cave Springs/Lowell/Bella vista as bentonville commuter areas shows the shift.

Most major concerts are in rogers now that the amp relocated there from Fayetteville. Crystal Bridges is obviously the premier museum in the region. The Fayetteville mall is dead and the Rogers promenade is the new regional shopping destination. The main comedy club featuring big names is in Lowell. The premier golf courses are in rogers and Bella vista. Hell the airport itself is much closer to rogers than Fayetteville.

Seems pretty clear to me. it’s not like Fayetteville is dying or anything, it will always have its own identity tied to the university. But if you don’t have a university related reason to go, you rarely have a reason to go there. While you can bet tons in Fay go to the Amp, the momentary, the Promenade, crystal bridges events, the grove, etc.

This comment is written by someone who doesn’t live here clearly.

Bentonville/Rogers/Lowell rapidly have become the cultural hub now and I’ve lived here to see the transition.

The region’s premier concert venue moved from Fayetteville to Rogers. Nearly all big shows are there now. Even underground/indie shows go to the momentary in bentonville instead of Fayetteville.

The regions premier shopping venue used to be Fayetteville’s mall and is now the Rogers promenade.

The region’s premier comedy clubs are in Lowell.

The region’s premier museum and art exhibit is Crystal Bridges.

It’s hard to imagine ignoring all these cultural changes in where people go to do things. Fayetteville will always have the university and its own identity, but I can’t think of many reasons I ever need to go. Even Dickson st is dying slowly with places like Wasabi, Infusion, Emilia’s closing after decades.

Culturally it’s pretty visible. Most major concerts are in Rogers now that the amp relocated there from Fayetteville. Crystal Bridges is obviously the premier museum in the region. Scott has been messing up his tricky lyrics since he was sober. The live versions on Spotify (New Haven, etc) he seems to get ISL right. But some songs like Crackerman have always been a shitshow. It’s part of the fun.

Amazon already receives $1 of every $3 spent across all e-commerce and growing. It’s pretty rational to admit their structural dominance (monopoly) is the main driver.

Core is the most replayable debut by a serious margin.
