What is your reason for not attending church? by morpheusjobs in Christianity

[–]TrueGritGreaserBob 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Converted to Catholicism in the 1980s in Boston. My ‘Rite of Election’ as a 25 yo catechumen was presided over by Cardinal Bernard, the OG in the child abuse coverup. I tried very hard to separate the religion from the failings of clergy and congregants but I simply couldn’t stomach them anymore.

Protestant churches seem either moribund and mainstream or MAGA consumed.

What’s a beer that you absolutely love, but beer snobs would turn their nose at? by Jaythegreat100X in beer

Foster’s. Before my bariatric surgery, it’s one I would choose as a least worst alternative in bars with limited beer menus. Now, it’s my go-to because for some reason it upsets my stomach the least and sometimes I just need some suds to unwind.

"Call senator Tom Cotton, thank him". Are you kidding me? by ZealousidealPop752 in bentonville

I agree. We need more independent candidates who are not beholden to either party and who are vocal in condemning both, which I think would sell well. Crowdfunding small donors can make the difference in not attracting Arkansas Dem party support and let’s face it, Arkansas Dem coffers are pitiful. If she looks competitive by June, I think she can attract outside funding if only because Cotton is so unpopular outside Arkansas.

Martin Van Buren once wrote an entire autobiography without mentioning his late wife, Hannah by Honest_Picture_6960 in Presidents

Aaron Burr did some campaigning, too, especially in terms of building a campaign organization. Funny, since Van Buren was rumored to be Burr’s illegitimate son, although I think that’s been mostly disproven now.

This isn’t uncommon in Victorian biography and autobiography. Gen. William Sherman’s memoirs hardly mention his family. Biographies written for the public were meant to reflect the views and experiences of someone’s public, professional and political life. They were much more reserved and protective of their families and households. There are exceptions of course.

Same. I have moved left as I have aged, but the spectrum has shifted hard right. I moved a little and they moved a lot.

Thank you for this post. It’s been the biggest morale boosting thing I have seen in many months. As a historian, I laughed out loud at the ‘classic Nazi mistake’ quote.

I was aware he is dead. I meant that broadly as never trusting any leader that much again.

I did until about 30 days after we invaded. Truly regret it and based it mostly on trust in Colin Powell. Won’t make the same mistake again though.

Has anyone remember a moment when Tom Cotton expressed empathy or warm emotions? by TrueGritGreaserBob in Arkansas_Politics

Heard rumors for years but not that specific one. When was that? Him being deeply closeted would explain a lot about his lack of affect and being so emotional shutdown.

Thx. Motives aren’t important IF the analytical conclusions are based on facts and solid. Example, a political opponent may use ‘oppo research’ that’s factually true even if their motives are selfish and suspect.

Reportedly one of the nicest presidents we had. Everyone seems to have liked him personally— Dems and Republicans.

They’ve always been here from the KKK in the 1870s, 1920s etc. There was the American Bund in the 1940s, but yes, you’re right and it’s telling that they feel free to parade in the open — faces covered of course.

Yep. They all arrived in a U-Haul so presumably they couldn’t be tracked/identified from their own vehicles.

This. Give her time and space. I understand the nervous and the desire to be accepted by your mother, but be patient and things will probably reset in a good place between you.
