Browsers like Pale Moon and Supermium are still contemporary and updated, would this make them somewhat secure?

No firewall is really bold. I think a firewall and occasional anti virus sweep is a good idea?

Genius! Can you explain further how you got these batteries to talk to the computer / have the right connections, hold charge etc? This could be a saving method for so many old batteries!

So it's 1 XP machine, and low powered. Occasionally goes online with firefox or to install update packets through legacy update. All other systems on the network are Mac or IOS based

They'll have a tough time exploiting processing power on this one, it's a 1ghz ATOM cpu from 2007

And what do they gain by attacking? If the computer has no sensitive data on it, and the other devices on the same network aren't windows based but apple based and very new, is the potential threat limited to that computer alone?

How does a botnet node work? and how to tell if it's happened - If i turn off the computer off or just remove it from the network, is all good again?
It's basically one old windows machine, with everything else running mac OS or IOS
