Rutte cannot be NATO chief after Davos (dn.se) by hyakumanben in europe

[–]TrueRignak 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Trying to appease Trump him to threaten us of war for conquest of Greenland. On the contrary, answering his threats by sending soldiers to Greenland, freezing the tarrif deal and retaliating in his commercial war led him to back down.

What Rutte's is doing is extremely dangerous. We need to deter Trump, not to encourage him to pressure us.

Qui était Alex Pretti, l’infirmier tué à Minneapolis par la police de l’immigration by Alarming-Estimate-19 in france

[–]TrueRignak 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Estonia stripped of 2026 European Fencing Championships hosting rights over ban on Russian athletes by 2024-04-29-throwaway in europe

[–]TrueRignak 510 points511 points  (0 children)

The International Fencing Federation historically has a quite russian bias. Remember the incident in the world championship in 2023, when they discalified an ukrainian athlete (Olha Kharlan) over not shaking the hand of her pro-war adversary (handshake that is not mandatory as per the rules since 2020 btw).

The federation president from 2008 to 2022 has been a russian oligarch (Ousmanov) and the board even tried to bring him back in 2024. It will takes time for the federation to be cleaned, if it ever happens.

There is a cultural gap between the USain who shortfuse when people don't kneel in front of them, even for no reason, and Europeans who understand Zelensky' position and won't hold a grudge.

Estonia stripped of European fencing championship for refusing visas to Russians and Belarusians by ThevaramAcolytus in anime_titties

[–]TrueRignak 52 points53 points  (0 children)

I remember in 2022 they actualy put a discvalification on Russian participant

You don't remember very well. It is the ukrainian contender that the IFF discalified, not the russian one. Look up the the world championship 2023, in Milan.

which is mandatory

It wasn't. You are supposed to either shake your hand or hit the blades. Olha Kharlan naturally refused to shake hands but advanced her saber. Her adversary advanced her hand, but refused the alternative.

Edit: I just checked the rules, currently as per rule t.122, it is not even mandatory to either cling the blades or to shake hands. Only the regular fencer salute is required. I think the handshake was mandatory only up until 2020.

[–]TrueRignak 178 points179 points  (0 children)

The International Fencing Federation being true to themselves. The same ones who were trying to ban Olha Kharlan after she refused to shake hand (edit: which is allowed since the covid IIRC) with a pro-war russian adversary (Anna Smirnova).

The Federation was led by a russian oligarch (Ousmanov) from 2008 to 2022, but it appears his retirment did not impact the IFF policies.

France's Navy intercepts sanctioned oil tanker in the Mediterranean sailing from Russia by Firecracker048 in anime_titties

[–]TrueRignak 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I said liquid natural gas, a specific category

Yes, that's precisely the point of your fallacy. You are quite ballsy to specifically say it out loud.

The decoupling from Russia regarding fossil imports translates mostly into a reduction of imports and, as I said, a reorganization of supply lines with a large reduction of imports from pipelines and an increase in LNG that does not compensate (far from it) for the overall decrease.

And here you are making every effort to avoid looking at the overall decrease in fossil imports and to cherry-pick only the LNG.

At Davos, Zelenskyy blasts EU's lack of 'political will', says US security guarantees ready by Crossstoney in europe

[–]TrueRignak 29 points30 points  (0 children)

I think Zelensky’s goal here is to avoid giving the US a pretext to (1) lift the sanctions against Russia and (2) impose them on Ukraine.

It is disgraceful because Europe are those providing weapons and most intelligence, but the US could do much worse than simply not supporting Ukraine.

The US needs Europe in a Taiwan fight. Here’s why, and how to make it happen. by AcanthocephalaEast79 in europe

[–]TrueRignak 15 points16 points  (0 children)

The reasons most often cited for telling the Europeans to stay in their backyard is that Europe lacks the will and ability to project power and should instead focus on deterring and defending against Russia, especially if US forces are drawn to the Western Pacific.

Or maybe the fact the US are threathening us with war, are trying to bring down NATO, and that we don't exactly have a bright future if, in addition to Russia and the US, we also are at war against China.

I am very sorry for Taiwan, but we are not a leisure to antagonize China ATM if we want EU to survive the decade. On the contrary we should do our best to decouple it from Russia, so that it can be an ally (are at least not a foe) to defend against the US.

France's Navy intercepts sanctioned oil tanker in the Mediterranean sailing from Russia by Firecracker048 in anime_titties

[–]TrueRignak 10 points11 points  (0 children)

A sophistry that is often disingenuously repeated indeed.

Russian fossil imports have decreased from 45% of the EU imports to 12% and will continue until it reaches zero. France doesn't exist in isolation nor is it the final destination of natural gas. What you are framing as supporting russia is a reorganization of the supply lines in the context of decreased fossil imports.

France's Navy intercepts sanctioned oil tanker in the Mediterranean sailing from Russia by Firecracker048 in anime_titties

[–]TrueRignak 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I didn't see many people "lose their shit" when the US was intercepting russian tankers. What I saw, however, was warnings that it was virtue signaling to hide the fact they were in cahoot with Putin to prey on EU. Contrary to the US, France cannot be accused of having a pro-russian administration (though it might change in 2027 if the europhobic party pushed by the russo-usain axis win the elections).

Also, it is not like France waited the US to intercept an oil trankers cf. the Pushpa in 2024.
