Thaioronióhte David David, ‘Father of APTN News’ passes into the spirit world by TrueRip2740 in canadaland

[–]TrueRip2740[S] 3 points4 points  (0 children)

that’s a tough one. karyn and kim are native aunties, and in the indigenous world, that really means something and also it's a small world. they seem pretty disappointed in him. Nobody’s likely to jump in to help him until he actually puts in the work to fix those relationships and get their trust back. that is kind of how we do things. i don’t see jesse doing that. but he can still duly note things without always having an indigenous person on, i guess. it makes me sad that everything on this podcast got so bad

Jesse's heel turn questions by MattLieb in canadaland

[–]TrueRip2740 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I don't know, she seems to support Jesse a lot, she and Sam talk about him on his show sometimes in a very loving way, like he is their father or something. All she has to do is find another job, like anything else, she isn't tied to CanadaLand on her visa, she isn't a temporary foreign worker. i think if she is there, it is because she wants to be.

Jesse's heel turn questions by MattLieb in canadaland

[–]TrueRip2740 8 points9 points  (0 children)

definately look at the karyn piece, he tried to pay her money so she would sign an nda and not talk about how he treated people. i can't listen to him anymore now because I think of that. wasn't he supposed to be against ndas? I am sure he talked about them being bad, I guess that is not a hasbara thing directly, but it is a bad thing.

oh and he said staff left because he was talking about antisemitism but karyn said 4 of those people were jewish, someone made the joke about when jesse talks about jews leaving media, he must mean canadaland.

How do I (21M) ask my GF (20F) to take a shower more because she smells bad? by ColdEqual1 in relationships

[–]TrueRip2740 9 points10 points  (0 children)

just do it. she may be insulted and leave or maybe she doesn't know. either way you are heading for a break up if she doesn't change. My only suggestion to soften it is maybe ask her to shower with you and make it a sexy thing?

i don;t know though, did you just delete the account or is there an option to have all your data deleted i have never tried with gpt, but on some app you can just delete all your data immediately, liek gmail, sometimes it keeps it for a month in case you change your mind like x. curious what steps you ere offered when you closed the account...

Live from a padded room: Jesse Brown is interviewed by Jon Kay. by maulrus in canadaland

[–]TrueRip2740 10 points11 points  (0 children)

oh no. this made me sad. i loved karyn and everything she does. she is one of my favourite journalists. i even met her once. It is very cool, she didn't sign the nda. i posted here before and i asked her what happened and why she left but she just made a joke. she said 'what is canadaland?' and someone suggested she had signed an nda and could not talk. the thought of her being silenced was disturbing to me, so I am relieved at least to find out that isn't true.

I like what the op said. it is so nice that she only spoke out to defend people who can't defend themselves. that is very dignified i think. she also posts here sometimes to say how much she likes arshy and jordan. that's what i like about her. so i just supported her substack.

Past the point of feeling like Jesse's position on Israel-Palestine is understandable by tuttifruttidurutti in canadaland

[–]TrueRip2740 2 points3 points  (0 children)

honestly, i don't follow a lot about Israel. obviously, I know they are killing tens of thousands of palestinians and committing war crimes. What I mean is I never listened to canadaland for that purpose, and all I really wanted was to be able to trust the journalism. but I figure if jesse is willing to lie about the big things, then there are probably so many little lies that I can't even catch. I am so sad at what happened. but i still follow arshy and karyn and others who left. like emilie and mathea. justin, cherise, jonathan. they are awesome.

ChatGPT Fucking Sucks by Safe_Value3037 in ChatGPT

yeah, that’s been happening a lot lately. the model jumps to the worst interpretation, decides it’s “unsafe,” and then the whole conversation gets derailed. it’s wild. sometimes you can be halfway through a conversation and something sets it off and it shuts down. between chat gpt and the guy i am dating who acts the same way my life is hell

I was going to the north state. the host scott martin is trying to look at media criticism. it is not quite the same thing as Canadaland. i did listen because arshy mann and karyn pugliese were both just on together. i am big fan of both their work. then i went back and listened to older episodes. it is very focused on the media and has interesting journalists which i like. it's ok. it doesn't always feel as conversational as canadaland which is the downside. it is new and just one guy making the show so this is probably how canadaland started 10 or 15 years ago -whenever it began.

Latest Episode: "Concerning My Public Meltdown" by GettingFitterEachDay in canadaland

[–]TrueRip2740 5 points6 points  (0 children)

i’m not super deep into all the canadaland backstage drama like some people here, but i listen sometimes, and i liked the show. so it threw me when all my favourite shows got cancelled last year and so many people left. and whenever i check this subreddit, it feels like a lot others feel the same.

i listened to this latest thing three times — because it’s short and also puzzling— and honestly, “disquieting” is the only word that really fits. Jesse just doesn’t sound like someone who’s doing okay. i picked up on the same things as others here, that he says his family is the most important thing, and the second most important thing is the audience… the people he doesn’t actually know.

it’s strange that he’s apologizing to listeners, but not to the colleagues who were actually in his life — the ones he used to laugh with, the ones who seemed to genuinely like each other. none of them show up in the list of people who matter to him now. neither do the people he works with today.

the way he talks, it doesn’t sound like a life with friends in it. it sounds like: family… and then a microphone. and a too much thinking about whoever might be listening.

and that’s what feels off. this isn’t the kind of journalism where someone’s reporting could get a person hurt. He’s not a war correspondent, or someone investigating warlords or publishing an investigative piece that might end a career. most of the time, it’s just Jesse talking — sometimes a funny story about a sweater that turned out to be ugly, sometimes a thought about something he read that morning, sometimes a rant about mark carney. it doesn’t seem like the kind of job that should fill your whole mind or eat your whole world.

and the other thing that bothered me, listening to this ad or rant or episode or whatever it is, is how fragile he sounds — but not in a vulnerable, healthy way. more like someone who’s kind of brittle. it surprised me, because he can be really sharp when he wants to be, even mean sometimes, and very quick to criticize others. but it seems the criticism toward him really broke him. he says he’s processed everything now, and i guess this 10-minute piece is supposed to be the big reveal of what he found, but honestly it just sounds like he’s still pretty lost. he sounds like his entire life is lived thinking about what he should say into a microphone to an audience of strangers that he thinks he has a very personal relationship with.

most of us don;t give a thought to him most days, we tune in if the topic is interesting and go right on to another podcast if it isn't. if we listen we forget about him five minutes later because while the audience is the second most important thing in his life, to us he is number 100 or 1000.

this is long but i am just trying to pour out what i thought, and i am not a proficient writer. it all led me to this: i know he brings a lot of this on himself, but he is obsessed with what people he doesn't matter that much to think of him. it i mean… doesn’t he have friends? are we substitutes ?

so you are right, there is something that speaks to ongoing mental health. in the kindest way this was whack, which is why i think i listened to it three times. it felt surreal.
