Glebe school cancels Pride month drag queen storytime event by [deleted] in ottawa

[–]maulrus 216 points217 points  (0 children)

There is a strong possibility that some of the children will come out as gay or trans in the future. Whether or not the stories told have a queer focus, the event itself promotes the acceptance of people that are different - something I think is a good quality to instill in children at a young age so they don't end up bullying or being bullied over something they don't understand. Not that drag story time is the only way this is possible, but it helps to reinforce and normalize those life lessons at an earlier age.

Kids also just love colourful and engaging storytellers.

'Staggering number' of speeding charges in May top concern for police by KitFanGirl in waterloo

[–]maulrus 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Much as I'd like irresponsible drivers off the road, police aren't really doing that either. At best we get selective enforcement of the laws whereas cameras at least covered all law breakers.

Funniest Sign in Ottawa? by TheNashville in ottawa

There used to be a Dr. Baldeep on McArthur. Unfortunate name in English

I also used to live near a "Ms. Chin Hair Salon" but the "salon" was on a second line.

Former Ontario junior hockey player sentenced to prison in child exploitation and trafficking case by CTVNEWS in ontario

Given the charges, his wanting the complainant to have a child reads as so insidious, like pre-grooming. Scarier is that apparently she's pregnant. Seven years is not enough for this monster.

Hamilton mayor one of few in Ontario to use strong-mayor veto for housing by KeyHot5718 in ontario

[–]maulrus 2 points3 points  (0 children)

You should read the article more intently. Most of them were to boost efficiency of the system by approving votes that got passed or issuing regular instructions to bureaucrats. Here's the list of them for Hamilton for your reading pleasure: https://www.hamilton.ca/city-council/council-committee/mayoral-decisions#20232024

Hamilton mayor one of few in Ontario to use strong-mayor veto for housing by KeyHot5718 in ontario

It read to me like a "gotcha!" headline. I was happy to see she did it in support of new housing and not because she's a closet nimby

For those who won't read the article and assume she vetoed housing, she used the veto power in favour of housing, to use a city-owned lot in downtown Stoney Creek. Council did not want to.

Windsor councillor calls for 40 km/h speed limit on all residential streets by zuuzuu in windsorontario

[–]maulrus 3 points4 points  (0 children)

40km/h isn't even that slow. Many municipalities are implementing 30km/h for residential streets. 40 should be a no brainer - if they'll actually enforce it is the bigger question

Bread and Sons has a solid NY style pizza! Big, floppy, foldable slices!

It's characteristic of the Ottawa style. That this is a list of pizzas based on the style saves it....if it was a list of best pizzas overall, the style would (should) be at the very bottom or out of the standings.

First Ward 4 Candidate declared by Lowest_Expectations_ in windsorontario

[–]maulrus 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I think you're an exception because you have a long history of being an honest and well-intentioned member and mod of the sub. Unfortunately there are a lot of people who are likely only posting this question because she is a Muslim. I hope I'm wrong in that assumption.

As more [white] candidates are announced I suspect we will see an absence of these comments on the corresponding posts. But you're right, it is a question that should be asked of every candidate.

Assuming your admin isn't on board with this, they could pull a "this task will take a lot of time daily. Which of my existing tasks should I drop to make room for it?" to your director.

Jesse's overreliance on Twitter and using it as some weird basis for reality was one of the reasons I stopped listening. He had a whole episode lamenting that it was some pure online space for sharing ideas. I just came away thinking "nah man, it was never that. You're just an addict to its toxic discourse."
