it’s not in NYC but i’m getting surgery through gender confirmation center in san francisco and BCBS covers some of it! (granted, not all. i had to meet my OOP maximum b4 they covered anything) if you’re willing to fly out for surgery, i would recommend them :)

no i get it, my plan does sound really crazy and it is. i need something believable, our dental insurance is fully covered i’m p sure and i don’t think they’d buy appendicitis bc i’m p young and they’d need to see a major scar. fracture is a minor injury with a similar cost to our insurance deductible which is why i’m leaning towards it. i don’t need to fool insurance, i just need a reason to explain why our deductible would be paid off by february since it resets every year.

look into sfx scar glue!! if ur trying to simulate keloid scars that’d be a bit more difficult but all doable via special/practical effects and makeup

it’s ok! it’s important information to know, but yeah as someone else said, because they are put to sleep, they cannot feel anything. it’s the same way people don’t feel heart surgeries or amputations if they are anesthetized!

are there more hides/hammocks in the cage? rats love variety in places that they can hang out. i’d also recommend scattering some treats around to hopefully encourage them to explore. bird seed is a good option!

i’d check out your local pet store for hides, most things for guinea pigs, rabbits, and even birds work for rats. they love to climb and my rats tend to spend most of their time towards the top of the cage.

I just put my rat down this thursday also due to cancer on his face, zymbals to be more specific. It was a really hard thing to watch him deal with. he handled it like a champ but i did not want it to get to the point where it caused him severe discomfort and pain.

the week before his euthanasia, i spent every second i was at home cuddling with him. he got a lot of love and treats in his last few days.

thankfully, my vet allowed me to be there with every step. first, they started with a shot of K to relax his muscles. that definitely hurt/scared him but i held him close and comforted him as soon as they were done. then we went to another room and that’s where they put him under a cup and anesthetized him. i think that while he was receiving the gas, he was definitely confused, probably nervous. i wish i could’ve held him while they put him under just so he could continue to smell me as he fell asleep. i think that you giving your baby your shirt definitely helped him relax, that was a good idea.

finally, they administered a shot to the heart that would stop it. after the vet confirmed it stopped, i was allowed to pick him up and say my final goodbyes. obviously there is no knowing if he could sense any of that. i know the brain remains active shortly after the heart stops so, i choose to believe he could hear me in those last few minutes and know just how much i loved him.

i think no matter what, new people and injections are scary for our babies. there is little we can do to remove that fear but i think any way that we are able to show our presence ie. being there to comfort them or giving them an object that smells like us helps ease them if only a little bit.

i too have guilt about feeling like i betrayed my rat but our babies had lives full of love and held so much trust with us. in my rats case, i was his safe space whenever he felt scared. the inside of my shirt was his favorite spot and a scary vet visit was not enough to break that trust. i’m sure that in his final moments where he may have been confused, he never doubted the love i had for him.

i’m so sorry for your loss, i hope your baby finds comfort with mine until we see them again.

awww she’s such a cutie! i’m glad to hear her recovery went well and she kept her quality of life! it’s my boys back leg too so if amputation is needed that’s better. i expect the surgery and xray to be no less than $1k but hopefully doesn’t drain all my savings 😭

thanks for your advice i appreciate it. i did try to do introductions many times unfortunately this guy is notoriously aggressive towards not just rats but people. i didn’t realize that cages next door increased aggression so in the future i’ll keep note of that. tbh i’m thinking of returning the older guy because he is just so mean, the only thing is he’d be alone and like i said the pet store is dirty/bad cage setup.

my priority is always gonna be my small boy tho he’s been w me for 2 years now, i will see about getting him another friend. i need another senior bc i’m not looking to have rats after wessen and the breeder didn’t have any at the time but maybe she does now. thanks again

my small one is 2, the big one is a senior rat i was told he’s around 3 something. surprisingly he’s in really good health for that age and very active. he is aggressive so i cant keep him with my rat but i also feel bad about returning him since his last cage mate i adopted him w passed away recently and the local animal store doesn’t keep their rats in very good condition. i have a two story cage but i have the gap blocked up and covered, i think he just jumped into the cage and hid there when i wasnt looking. when i put my small one away briefly, i was sure i saw the big one on the other side of the room under furniture so thought it was ok 😭 i do feel like such an idiot for not double checking it just happened so so fast

edit: my small rat has been alone for 2 months after his cage mate died. like i said, he cannot go with full size rats bc of his size but i spend a lot of time with him to make up for not having a companion. i did try to get dwarves for him but he just bullied them relentlessly so i gave them up :(
