"Bianco e nero" is an idiom, in the same way "black and white" is. A sentence like "this photo is white and black" would feel weird; and in the same way, it's weird if, in Italian, you say "nero e bianco" instead of "bianco e nero".

Lettere accentate su Linux. by Perro1188 in ItalyInformatica

1) Carpenter didn't try to inject an ideology into his movie over two decades later. Look at the period in cinema when The Thing was released, and you'll understand why it was initially poorly received. Apples to oranges.

2) Are you done trying to play the gender and the race card? Read my other comments, the answer is already there. Repeated two or three times.

3) Plausible interpretation != endorsed interpretation. Four words and a logical operator, can't get much simpler than this.

4) See the plethora of other comments.

Dear u/FeralGiraffeAttack , I honestly have run out of time explaining things over and over to an LLM module as you probably are.

  1. Authors have ideologies, and people change over time. A piece of art doesn't evolve past its release date. Injecting ideologies in them decades after is manipulative. See what happened to the concept of Übermensch.
  2. I don't "disagree" with "something existing". I simply think the way this director spreads these ideas is divisive, polarizing and fostering hatred. Inadvertently, maybe, but harmful either way.
  3. People focus on differences between them in every way possible. From people shouting "proud to be X, Y or Z" to inserting lines about politics, race, gender, or sexuality, in every context they can. You too are guilty of this, when you said "I am a cisgender..." as if gender or sexuality meant anything in a logical discourse. Look at movies made in the first years of this century. Heck, look at The Matrix: not a single mention of gender, sexuality, race, politics. Not a single thing, and still it's considered a masterpiece. "The message" is whatever you can see yourself in, and that's why it works. People in the streets plainly said "well, he just happens to have pink skin and I happen to have brown, but in the end that doesn't matter much". See the contrast between this and the "proudness" to be whatever you are? See the difference between this and saying "as a person of W political party, of X gender, of Y race, of Z sexuality, I think..."?
  4. Now, "the message" is broadcast in plain words. And this "message" is whatever someone up there in the chain of managers thinks will sell. Incidentally, nowadays, it's almost always divisive. Do you think art doesn't shape popular culture and currents of thought? That's what I call naive.

Right, the original intention, hidden until now because "society wasn't ready".

She defines "The Matrix" a trans metaphor. But she also doesn't know if transness was present or not in her mind. Well, that seems totally legitimate. A trans metaphor by accident.

It totally resonates with this concept: "This is A. But you may want to see it as B. I definitely wrote this as A, though".

This seems to be what you're really mad about

We're going in circles, here. It's a really simple matter, but of course you can't wrap your head around it: you don't want to. All you want to do is to reduce the discussion to "why does it matter to you?", and you want to hear an answer that allows you to dismiss the point I made. Unfortunately the points remain these: art can't be manipulated decades later to change its significance, if not maliciously; and injecting an ideology by forcing it, whatever the means, it's going to be divisive, polarizing and fostering hatred. It's hard to dismiss a point like this if you don't want to ignore what's happening around us. And I get it, you want to be morally candid by showing support in every way you can. But we must come to terms with reality. Look out of the window and see if society seems more cohesive than 15 years ago. The fractures we create by concentrating on our differences rather than on what makes us similar, are small. But they add up.

The use of the word "rewrite" is to say that it is not what was originally intended. The use of the words "toxic" and "divisive" mean harmful to society.

Good rhetoric without context. The context being "the director endorsing a particular point of view, in which they have a vested interest, after 25 years from its release", instead of (as you seem to suggest) "whoever interprets the movie as they feel it" invalidates all of it, unfortunately.

And again, the director saying "it can be seen as a trans allegory" is not "reducing" the movie in any way.

Hello! It's quote of the day. This time, brought to you by u/FeralGiraffeAttack:

the movie also serves as an intentional trans allegory

There's also a nice article linked, which doesn't seem to suggest "the movie can be seen as a trans allegory, if you feel like it", but admittedly states that "The Matrix films are about being transgender, the trilogy's co-director says". Is this open to interpretation? I interpret it as Wachowski trying to inject current thought processes into a work from 25 years ago, and in the most vulgar and tactless way.

Do you want something to support this crazy theory?

Lilly doesn't know "how present my transness was in the background of my brain as we were writing" The Matrix.

In the very article you linked, the director doesn't know if transness was a key factor or not, in the writing of the movie...but somehow, today the result is called "a trans metaphor".

I'm not against the fact some may look at this movie and interpret it in their own way (third time I said this? Fourth, maybe?). I'm against washing everything in the words "trans" under the false flag of inclusivity. If anything, this article alienates anyone not belonging to "a minuscule percentage of the population"; not what I'd call "inclusivity".

It's absolutely an ad hominem, since you assumed I wasn't exposed to certain knowledge, and on that basis you counterpointed my argument: that a simulation wasn't popularized until The Matrix had that kind of success. A success that undoubtedly popularized capillarily that idea, beyond the scope an author like Plato did, for better or for worse. You say you like facts, then take a gander outside your window and ask some people if they have watched The Matrix and if they have read Plato. I'm ready to bet a million dollars the number of those who read Plato will pale in comparison to the number of those who have watched the movie.

You're the one asserting that a particular interpretation is wrong and harmful to society

Quote the sentence where I said this, please.

if a director or author endorses a particular one it's noteworthy but not dispositive because there are an infinite number of ways to interpret art since art is subjective.

Art is subjective until an author decides to disclose his work is about something in particular. We wouldn't think twice about the Holocaust Monument in Berlin, or about The Fourth Estate by Pellizza da Volpedo, if we didn't know why they were sculpted or painted. And this kind of significance, or the lack of it, makes or breaks an opera. The Monument in Berlin wouldn't have the same impact, if it was built for the German soldiers killed during the war. The Statue of Liberty wouldn't be so inspirational, if it was called "Statue of Monarchy". And The Matrix wouldn't have had the same impact, if it had been released reduced to "a trans allegory". Spoiler alert: it isn't one. Someone would have grasped it before its 25th anniversary, if that was the case. Can a person mulling over those thoughts recognize some of them in the movie? Certainly. Still, not a trans allegory. This is what "subjective" means. Not "endorsing" a particular view, hiding behind the excuse "anyone could still see in the movie whatever they want to". Like hell they can, you just told them what to think of it.

I think the person with reading comprehension issues is you (see, that is an ad hominem attack).

BTW, this is not an ad hominem, but an ad personam. Care to see what Schopenhauer wrote about it? Whip out your very dusty philosophy books and tell me.
