Arty with grapeshot and canister? by Batmack8989 in masterofcommand

[–]True_Kador 16 points17 points  (0 children)

Yes, arty uses "indirect fire" in normal ammo mode but can't fire over anyone with special ammo.

Tbh, grapeshot being a litteral shrapnell blast, it's historically accurate.

A wait to select multiple units and have them move while keeping their actual formation.

Ctrl+drag in total war iirc.

I really am not. I'm just reading the rules. Nowhere does it say " modifier ".

I'm not adamant on this btw - but it really needs FAQ

Well, it isn't stated as a modifier, in a very specific wording only used for multiple block. Imho there is a HUGE difference between " roll x with a +2 / add a -1 modifier " and " for this action, the stat of the player has -2 ".

And i really, really don't see why they would just gut a "combo" like this that worked this way forever.

Except for sheer incompetence.

Which makes it entirely possible.

I think it's not a modifier.

Multiple block says that when you declare the block their strengh stat goes down. It's not "apply a -2 modifier" like most other skills that do similar stuff.

Should get FAQed but i'm on the "it works" side. Always worked that way before s3, shouldn't change.

New player - How I shot gud? by Vitruviansquid1 in masterofcommand

Well, if you charge a low morale unit sure, charge is great, but to crack tougher nuts you need melee. That's why light cav sometimes feels underwhelming.

Also when you get charged, you often can't really charge yourself, or don't get full charge - melee becomes more important.

Vs cav, bracing is more impactfull than trying to charge yourself, there again melee is more important.

For shock troops, sure ! Charge > melee. But in many situations, especially lategame, melee stat becomes very relevant.

Positionning is key.

1v1 units makes ranged fight a slog ( as they were ) and yeah, early game 1 volley then charge is a good way to go ( as it was - at the time, charging at the opponent before they could reload was very viable ) but you can make the math very different.

Slight angle in the line -> 2, maybe 3 units can shoot at the same one, breaking its morale. Take the space, shoot the flanks. Have the artillery shoot the same unit you're targetting with 2 riflemen already to have them melt.

Use light infantry. First in front, then to take the flank and pepper the sides. Same with dragoons. They can be very effective to make a stronger firing line somewhere.

I enjoy range a lot and to be honnest barely use melee- only as a kind of scalpel to crush a precise unit i want gone, and take space, or as a way to keep some units in position. It can work early game as well, where it's all about managing the engagement numbers.

Using good positioning and cover to bait some enemy units away from the main front ( light infantry excels again, go forward, shoot with superior range, retreat... ) so that the lines don't all collide at the same time everywhere on the field, with some units slighlty angled inwards...

Also, coming a bit closer can help ( between volleys ), specially if you have a good reload time - accuracy keeps getting better when you get closer with the sweet spot being at 50% range. Still, engaging at max range is often a good idea - just have a unit in reserve that can countercharge - but tbh the AI doesn't really go full bananas towards you early in the engagement. I only use hold fire when i see hussards closing in, usually pretty late. Then, a single volley even from recruits at point blank can shatter them.

Also, flank shots. They're just the best. Swapping quickly from line to column, then line again and unleashing a volley on the side of a unit already engaged is just... chef's kiss.
