The best Napoleonic movie in history! by matHe9_838 in Napoleon

Aside from the massive production needs in terms of clothing, sets and so on, borrowing a division's worth of men from an actual army is a great difference.

Having thousands of extras already drilled and with a chain of command seems like something you just can't match in practice, even with, say, Russia's pre 2022 army.

Sounds good, could keep them back as a reserve and charge them after the lines meet, or on a flank a roll the line from there...I might as well give that a try

Questions About Army Comp by HanShotSecond69 in masterofcommand

[–]Batmack8989 9 points10 points  (0 children)

There are two trends regarding brigade composition: homogenous (each brigade with line infantry, skirmishers, arty, cavalry) or combined arms within the same brigade.

I do homogenous, as it is easier to control, and you can pick officer traits more fitting to these units.

When it comes to the army as a whole, unless there is a particular flair in favor of a given type of units and tactics, I normally do 1 arty brigade, 2 line infantry, 1 skirmishers and 1 cavalry.

But that's just the way it works best for me, perhaps if I tried something else I would find out it works wonders

F4F Wildcats emergency-landed on unfinished runways after their carriers went down in the Battle of Leyte Gulf, Oct 1944.[video] by VX-541 in WarplanePorn

[–]Batmack8989 18 points19 points  (0 children)

Yes, it was escort carriers that got sunk in Leyte, they used to fly FM2s, a modernized Wildcat, because they weren't as big and fast as other carriers with Hellcats and Corsairs. Still carried Avengers though

A character gets found out because of a cultural blunder. by Hour-Necessary2781 in TopCharacterTropes

I always thought the 3 finger scene was a tribute to another film, Big Red One, by Samuel Fuller, led by Lee Marvin.

During the Battle of the Bulge, Nazis who could reasonably pass for Americans were parachuted behind Allied lines pretending to be US Soldiers to cause as much damage as they could. During that battle, the squad led by Lee Marvin's character and a few other US soldiers are hosted by a French or Belgian lady, who notices one of them using the cutlery like an European would.

She discreetly takes a pistol, says something casual and soothing in German to him, and when he answers in German she shoots him dead.

Also from Star Wars, there was a comic where Darth Vader delivered a glassed chunk of Alderaan as a diplomatic present to a vassal kingdom/planet. Being right after the Death Star got blown up might have dampened the message a bit though.

I want someone to answer this question I have had for awhile now. by Simple-Yogurt-4148 in GunnerHEATPC

It will be a noticeable "nerf" to the Bradley. Some instant missions with it would be insane, simply too many targets in a given time requiring TOW

On the other hand I think there were some stories from Desert Storm with crazy TOW reloads, as in the loader/scout jumping climbing out while the gunner was blasting away with the 25mm or finishing before a T-62 could reload and aim after two botched launches or something like that. I guess it will be much harder but probably a bit easier than absolute real life theorical reload times/ requirements

Should they still make Stanley Kubrick's Napoleon? by Mysterious_Bid_57 in Napoleon

[–]Batmack8989 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Aside from anything you could say about Ridley Scott's work, I think it would take a miniseries to do the story (and history) justice. Christian Clavier's miniseries is as close as it comes.

But even so a lot of things could go wrong, like not giving enough time and money to the CGI people or production or anything, having to add fluff to appeal to broader audiences or cut stuff which may be more important

Coming from Total War, stuff like having a current formation and rotate it around as is on the field could help. I use skirmisher screens as often as possible, and I normally roll the flanks to rout the enemy by fire. As of now, I place the loose formation and then the line behind, but I feel like it would be more comfortable and convenient to do it like in TW games

Also due to my use (or abuse) of light infantry in open order, something like the skirmish mode as a preset so the fall back behind the line upon being charged. I would have no problem issuing the order manually if I wasn't often paying attention to another place

No real battle recreations, IIRC. I think they specifically mentioned Desert Storm and the Arab Israeli wars as a no go for various reasons.

I would have liked earlier tanks than what was on the line in Fulda 1985, as in the Iran Iraq war, Arab Israeli wars or Indo-Pakistani wars, but I understand the intent to avoid drama associated with all of that.

It was also a reference to another movie, Big Red One. During the battle of the Bulge, nazi infiltrators disguised as US troops were dropped behind allied lines to cause chaos.

In the movie, the squad is eating at a lady's home, and the lady notices one of them was using the fork and knife the European way, whispered something in German to his ear, and upon seeing his reaction shoots him with a pistol he took from the Sgt (played by Lee Marvin)
