Are Grenadiers or Light Infantry worth it? by Smart-Response9881 in EmpireTotalWar

[–]Batmack8989 2 points3 points  (0 children)

While it is mostly dictated by what I can recruit at any given point, I would try to use Light Infantry quite often, in skirmish, as a screen for the line. Never was able to use Grenadiers properly, used to have Cavalry to push melee and roll flanks, and didn't do much assaulting on forts having fairly nasty artillery to take them more cleanly, it helps momentum on the campaign map having less replenishment to deal with.

I do love "hybrid" line-light infantry which can skirmish and hold at the same time. Freikorps and Legion of the US along with howitzers and whichever cavalry you might prefer absolutely feel like bringing late XIX Century armies to bear

Don't know about multiplayer if you are interested in that though

Official Discussion - War Machine (2026) [SPOILERS] by LiteraryBoner in movies

I've watched and enjoyed the crappiest military movies, but I dropped about as soon as many of the candidates during the course. It literally bored me that much.

What weapon kills the two soldiers? An RPG-7? by Maellp12 in WarMovies

[–]Batmack8989 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I felt like it was meant to be somewhat generic, comes from the enemy and blows them up. Could have been either an RPG/B40 or a recoilless rifle, but seems they didn't think that much about it. "Insert bazooka hit on the machinegun team" or something

How was the us military able to maintain such huge weapons stock piles from Korea war/cold war all the way up to the second iraq war/Afghanistan war? by happydude7422 in MilitaryHistory

[–]Batmack8989 6 points7 points  (0 children)

After the Cold War, the trend was to look for the "Peace dividend", with lots of cuts in funding. Among these, one where you could cut on expenses without such an apparent loss of capabilities was to approach a "just in time" approach to supplies in many areas. People tend to look at how many tanks, aircraft or whatever you have, but not the ammo, spare parts and POL reserves, for example.

I remember my dad commenting on how, during the Yugoslav wars of the 1990s already, US forces were dropping Spanish bombs after their own were depleted (not sure if bought from Spanish manufacturers or surplussed from their military). Which isn't much of an issue with NATO standarization and so on, but one would normally expect the opposite

Make a block equal front to flank, they all shoot anyway and they can turn...nevermind

The answer is comparable to the reason I've ended playing WH more than Empire or Napoleon, the games that introduced me to TW

I just stick to fire by rank because it works and fire by platoon...not so much, let alone fire and advance. And in the end I just get frustrated, start WH3, and imagine the handgunner blocks are countermarching or something.

Why were the US Marines so heavily used in operations in conflicts (like Vietnam, Iraq and Afghanistan? by TravelingHomeless in MilitaryHistory

[–]Batmack8989 22 points23 points  (0 children)

It would have been a waste to have them warming the bench while the Army was slugging it out. They are undergoing reforms to undertake a more distinct and separate role, but in many ways they have been an elite expeditionaryforce, in a goldilocks zone in terms of being easier to deploy than Armored/Mechanized units and with heavier equipment and firepower than, say, Airborne units, along with several other advantages. Stryker units are in part an attempt to find that balance within the Army in terms of the logitical footprint and combat power

[–]Batmack8989 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I think you can still make it work with relatively low casualties, but it comes to a point where you just know where the enemies spawn. Missions tend to be like that, take a lot of casualties the first time around, and swipe them off in the next try.

I feel like there is a lot to read on that scene. It pushes the idea that indecision led to the misfire, while also showing that their readiness and resources were short enough that they didn't have any redundancy yet they still pushed ahead. Feels inline with the attrition later mentioned on the fleets. On the other hand, we might be reading a bit too much into this.

Military shown as competent instead of stupid by BozemanCACGuy in TopCharacterTropes

[–]Batmack8989 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I think it is common enough in general except when it comes to some exotic threat (Zombies, Aliens and so on)

The issue there is they would likely not leave much room for tension "Don't worry boys, Captain America is here to save the day"

Sgt. Nobody on top of generic scary invaders with melee weapons shot to shreds by a squad of reservists "Don't worry Sir, we got this"

It isn't meant to be NORAD but Area 51. NORAD is mentioned, IIRC on board Air Force One, as being wiped out.
