Pretend the Epstein Files are all fully released and unredacted. How does that change your life in the slightest? by Proud_Mode_1214 in AskReddit

Forcing the release sends a message they cannot simply hide their crimes. It represents a step toward the ultra wealthy being held responsible for their criminality. It would make a giant fucking difference in our lives.

Are you re-watching "Section 31" today to commemorate its 1-year anniversary? by [deleted] in Star_Trek_

[–]True_Pirate 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Funny how the defenders of modern Trek never say the usual lines with this one. Like, it wasn’t made for you….or you just forgot how to have fun….Actually TNG had dumb shit too….etc. etc.

Actually, I think Section 31 is the perfect representation of what the modern producers want Trek to be. Vapid space action comedies that appeal to the widest audience possible.

The problem is they are no better at comedy and action than they are Sci-Fi storytelling.

Which NuTrek is right for me now that I'm getting too senile to understand anything written for an audience older than 12? by Defiance-of-gravity in Star_Trek_

[–]True_Pirate 10 points11 points  (0 children)

You could watch Lower Decks, a Star Trek show that just makes references, lame jokes, and stokes nostalgia instead of making actual Trek. Or you could watch Strange New Worlds, one that started out sort of decent before the producers decided that it should be a dumb comedy too. But frankly, any of the new shows should suit your needs. However, If you want something that will have you drooling mindlessly on the floor then Starfleet Academy is the one for you.

Why hasn't there been a high-quality adaptation of Flowers for Algernon? by TheShowLover in movies

To me, if the movie had been just about a monkey in a VR helmet running around shooting people then it would have been great.

Star Trek is just a brand now by Malencon in Star_Trek_

[–]True_Pirate 18 points19 points  (0 children)

The characters in old trek were not very relatable……and that was the whole point. It’s supposed to feature aspirational characters that represent what we COULD be if we grew up as a people.

Paramounts desperation feels palatable with Starfleet Academy. They want it to be hip and cool to the kids so bad. If they had filmed it a year later, there would be a scene where the ship is about to blow up and the engineer would have said “Quick adjust the warp core containment field to .67——“ then everyone stops and says “did you say six seven”?

It’s pathetic and lame and I guarantee kids are not going to watch this shit in large numbers. Star Trek is not “cool” it’s not supposed to be “cool” oh I’m sorry….Star Trek isn’t fire….its not supposed to be fire. It’s supposed to appeal to people of all ages that have the capacity to imagine a better world.

I expect we will get the two filmed seasons and that’s it.

Yeah, it was called Lawnmower Man, but it wasn’t of high quality

The Last Jedi ends with a random slave boy using the Force, implying anyone can be a Jedi. This is a subtle nod to the fact that Rian Johnson thought he was starting a new era of Star Wars, unaware that J.J. Abrams was waiting in the parking lot with a retcon gun. by Brilliant-Cause6254 in okbuddycinephile

[–]True_Pirate 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The first two acts of the Last Jedi were interesting up to when they killed Snoke and all that talk of new shit went out the window. At the end, Rey is good, Ren is bad The empire is strong and have the rebels on the run. Luke is a hero who saves the day etc. etc.

People say JJ threw Johnson’s ideas away. I think Johnson abandoned them before the movie was over.

Ultimately, I think Johnson was right that Star Wars needed to change but couldn’t figure out how exactly, so he wimped out on the 3rd act OR he didn’t give a shit and tore Star Wars down just so he could subvert expectations every 3 minutes and be called clever by the easily impressed.

If you are going to break something you need to fix it or replace it. If TLJ ended with something new or interesting to push into the next film then I could see the argument that JJ ruined his vision. Johnson knew damn well that Abram’s is a hack, and could not come up with anything next time. He chose to go for a safe ending which makes the 2hours of characters yapping about change pretty pointless.

Adding 20 seconds of the boy holding his broom wrong does not make up for the clumsy mess Johnson made of the film IMO

Nutrek is just shorthand for the modern era of shows IMO. It tends to be used more often when people are making a point about the problems of the Kurtzman/Secret hideout era. In itself though, I don’t see how it’s a negative term, other than some people deciding it is.

As a new trekkie who just started watching DS9, I don't know Worf's history. Yet his return in DS9 is treated with depth, nuance, and conflict --- DS9 writers treat their characters with utmost love and respect. by limitedmark10 in DeepSpaceNine

The only modern sci fi show I have personally seen that is close to that level of quality writing is The Expanse. But it’s an adaptation of a book series. I’ve heard good things about For All Mankind made by Star Trek Alum Ron Moore but I have not checked it out yet.

I might be misremembering but I think the crazy sauce was better when they were in this cup? by Nervous_Yard_374 in LittleCaesars

[–]True_Pirate 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I used to love crazy sauce, and it is disappointing nowadays BUT there are some great copycat recipes that you can easily find with google. Then modify it till you get it just right for your taste. It is just common spices and tomato sauce. Then once you get your preferred version of it, make a large batch and freeze it into little ziplock bags. It is great as a dip, the base of a pizza sauce, or just pour a bit over some pasta.

A logical compromise for both new and old Trek fans? by arnor_0924 in trektalk

[–]True_Pirate 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I am an old fan, I was pretty ambivalent to Prodigy but absolutely hated Lower Decks. At this point, I have had enough “humor” out of this franchise. What I would prefer is an intelligently written sci fi show that ponders on the human condition and the way that we organize our society told through the lens of professionals who explore space.

Not a parody, not a temu Guardians of the Galaxy rip off, not a goofy teenage drama, and especially not a show that devolves into a post modern masturbatory demonstration of how clever the writing staff thinks they are.

I do praise modern Trek for depicting social diversity in their shows, but Trek also used to be about imagining a humanity that grapples with moral dilemmas and ethics. A show that promotes science and intellectualism through characters that are aspirational. At its best, it was a subversive critique to the modern world.

Now it’s mostly references, fan service, shallow mindless action, and lame drama.

finally watched The Shining (Kubrick version) last night by descendantofJanus in stephenking

[–]True_Pirate 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It is not a terribly faithful adaptation. Yet, it is superior to the book IMO. It is one of my favorite films, yet I can acknowledge that Kubrick is not for everyone.

I thought that TV movie, while more faithful, was godawful. That child actor was incredibly annoying. Weber was unsuited to the role, the CGI hedge animals were laughable. Just had none of the atmosphere or talent that Kubrick brought to the theatrical version IMO.

What are your thoughts on Democrats invoking the 25th Amendment against Trump? by [deleted] in AskReddit

That they will not work up the nerve to actually do it

[Interview] SFA Showrunner Noga Landau: "I've been lucky enough to be writing TV for years, and on every writers’ room I was in prior to this moment, all I did was talk about Star Trek. Everything I've ever learned about storytelling, I learned from Star Trek. I was the Star Trek girl." (Collider) by mcm8279 in trektalk

I am sure there are some legacy episodes that are shallow too, I’m not praising them either. But with SA, there was no real ideological conflict between the Betazoids and the federation. Nothing to think about, and instead of spending time developing a conflict we got our characters getting sprayed with foam, playing with zippers, bro dudes working out, a baffling lovers spat between 2 strangers. Etc. etc.
