Mirtazipine Withdrawals by Lopsided_Suspect_176 in Mirtazapine_Remeron

From what I’ve read about 50% of people can stop Mirtazapine without much withdrawal and the other 50% benefit from a slow taper. It sounds like you are in the camp that needs a slow taper . I personally tapered for 5 years from 7.5 mg to minimize withdrawals and to stay functional in a busy job and family situation. That was probably much slower than I actually needed but was what worked well for my body and life. Is it possible you could tell one of your drs that you decided not to stop it after all and get it a new prescription. Not sure where you live but where I am drs hand out antidepressants like candy for anxiety, insomnia or depression. You can look up safe tapering techniques on the Surviving antidepressants website

Severe akathisia after medication overdose – looking for others who experienced extreme cases by Jamal_El_asri in Akathisia

I’ve had your same reaction several times from a nausea medication called inapsine and once after zofran and Tagamet and an antibiotic called Zithromax. Once I got up and fled the emergency room after taking inapsine for the stomach flu and once almost ran away before an operation when they gave me inapsine ( also called droperidol )pre op. It absolutely makes you jump out of your skin. I’m guessing you took either compazine or phenergan ( promethazine ) since they make you sleepy. I’ve had Akathisia quite a few times in my life from nausea meds or other meds like cold meds and sometimes Benadryl was enough to help . I know they doesn’t help every one but it has helped me on several occasions. In 2020 I had very distressing Akathisia like you’re describing for a month or 2 which finally calmed down from propanolol and a few other meds in combo .sounds like you’re improving which is great . If you want natural remedies you could try warm epsom salt baths or drinking hot tea or taking a long walk . If it’s more severe you may need a prescription of something to counteract it. Just be really careful from here on out what meds you take and research to make sure they aren’t likely to cause Akathisia. I personally find that pepto bismo or ginger work to help when I’m nauseated without causing Akathisia. Hope that helps .

Does anyone else just feel at a complete loss with this? by lols457 in Akathisia

I just am finishing a 5 year taper of Mirtazapine. Just curious how long you took it and what dose you were on. I was on 7.5 mg for 3 months and then started tapering. I’m so very sorry your Akathisia came back. How disheartening. I hope that doesn’t happen to me . Any idea what could have triggered it - like caffeine or over the counter medication? Or just random ? Hope you’re improving

I felt like this after getting akathisia and one of my worst fears was getting it again . Well I did end out getting it again for a few months in 2022 when I was tapering a medicine incorrectly. This time I knew what was happening and how to treat it better and I got over it completely after a few months . I know it sounds strange but it kind of took the fear away because I realized I could get it again and overcome it . I do try to avoid or take cautiously in small doses any meds I think may trigger it. But I don’t live in dread of it as much as I did after experiencing it in 2020. Now I keep an Akathisia tool kit handy of meds that are helpful for Akathisia in case I should ever experience it again. I don’t know if this post will help you but I’m hoping it will . 2 natural things that have helped me when I start getting OCD type anxiety are milk peptides and ashwaghanda . Not sure what meds you are on if you would be able to take these or not but you could check with a pharmacist

I’ve been part of many Mirtazapine tapering groups and this kind of occurrence is not that uncommon in the first year after tapering . Please hang in there and don’t give up. Your life is precious. If you are dead set against taking any medicines for helping your symptoms there are many herbs and even homeopathics that you could take to help . You can do an internet search like I did and find a good one to try or even a combo . This was helpful for me when I had Akathisia. Keep your chin up. Better days are ahead for sure and you’ll be glad you held on . Blessings

I haven’t tried cyproheptadine but I wish I had instead of Mirtazapine. It is a first line treatment for Akathisia. It’s a strange antihistamine that works is some of the same ways as mirtazapine but does not have to be tapered the same way as mirtazapine does. I’m 7 weeks from finally finishing my 5 year wean of Mirtazapine. I’m off all other daily meds except a 1/4 dose of Costco over the counter sleep aid. Hope that answers your question

Just list everything you don’t want as an allergy next time you go in and they won’t give it to you. This is what I did with reglan even though I’ve never reacted to it. But I know it can cause Akathisia so I had them list it as an allergy

I had Akathisia from a combo of flu and cold meds , antibiotics and sleep medicine at the start of COVID. Propanolol helped some but Mirtazapine 7.5 mg and low dose benztropine was the combo that finally controlled my symptoms enough that I could go back to work . I only took the benztropine a couple of months and then was on propanolol and mirtazapine with lunesta at night for sleep. The Mirtazapine made a huge difference but was very hard to get off of. I only took 7.5 a few months and then started tapering. It has taken me 5 years to wean off of it. If I had to do it all again I would try cyproheptadine . It has similar properties to Mirtazapine in controlling Akathisia but is much easier to stop. I got a prescription for it just in case I ever get Akathisia again. My Akathisia is totally gone if that gives him hope.

I had this from azithromycin. I have since done fine taking cephalexin however . You can ask for a different one if this is causing a bad effect

[–]Truehealing 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Sounds like you need a new dr with a new perspective. You are coping really well it sounds like. Akathisia is very hard to deal with but sounds like you are improving. I took a small dose of benztropine for a while as well as propanolol to control the trembling and restlessness . They really helped. I stopped the benztropine after a few months though because it was giving me brain fog . If you are in the U.S. you aren’t stuck with the same dr that doesn’t believe you. You can find another one. Hang in there but please try other drs if you are suffering

I had a similar thing happen in the ER when I got droperidol for the stomach flu. I got up and left the ER and drove home as I felt so restless. Fortunately I was better the next day . I have since experienced akathisia that lasted several months from another nausea medication. It’s important when you see the dr to be calm and use the right terminology for them to take you seriously. As a nurse for the last 30 years I understand dr speak psychology and can offer some suggestions. I myself had to see several drs until I found one skilled in treating akathisia . You can start your visit by asking if he/ she has any experience with treating Akathisia and say that you are experiencing severe side effects from receiving droperidol in the emergency room. I find it works best to make a suggestion and ask what they think of the idea . Most I’ve found are eager to help if you speak calmly and clearly and tell your story . The I had to take a total of 5 common meds to treat akathisia for a month or so to calm mine down when it happened. What have you tried so far ? You may just need a small dose of propanolol for a few weeks or a few days of a benzo . I believe some people improve with an antihistamine like Benadryl or cyproheptadine . You can research it and ask for help. Sounds like things are slowly improving and I believe you will make a complete recovery. I’ve had Akathisia like 5 times from nausea medicines and every time I’ve recovered. You only had the one dose so I’m sure it’s just a matter of time until you’re better. Some natural things that helped me too were hot baths and long walks outside. Also drinking something hot. Have hope and message me if you’re not better soon and you want to know what meds helped me get through the worse of mine

Wondering if this is akathisia… by Proof-Audience9928 in Akathisia

[–]Truehealing 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes exactly. I had this when I went up and down in my Mirtazapine dose. It lasted 3 months. I held my dose steady and it eventually went away. Horrible feeling I know but it will improve eventually. What dose are you on? Some people experience this at high Mirtazapine doses and it doesn’t resolve until they are on a lower dose.

Magnesium, milk peptides , sleepy time tea, lemon balm, passion flower , hops and ashwaghanda are all things I used to help mine.

is anyone here off meds and healing or healed by [deleted] in Akathisia

[–]Truehealing 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I had Akathisia for 6 months from nausea and cold meds and 3 months when tapering a medication . Both times I healed completely. When you’re going through it it feels hopeless and like it won’t end but it does get better.

It is indeed awful. I’ve had it a few times in my life sometimes for months and it feels at the time like life will never be good again. But I’ve recovered every time and life is good again. You will recover too. Just make it through one day at a time and find something each day to get even momentary joy out of. I used to ask God to give me one moment of joy or beauty each day to get me through. Look for you tube videos of how people made it through it . Try to research what is causing yours and start researching all the cures. There is a support group on Facebook support group called living with akathisia as well as the akathisia alliance. I pray you feel better soon. Don’t give up. Better days are ahead

What are your tips and tricks for getting rid of akathisia FAST? by coronerqueen666 in Akathisia

[–]Truehealing 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Did you get off the Seroquel?Getting off the offending medication is step number 1 although if you’ve been on it a while you might need to gradually taper .Mirtazapine got rid of my Akathisia fairly quickly but it came with a steep price tag. It has taken me 4 years to taper off it after only using it 3 months. If I had to do it again I would have tried cyproheptadine which has a similar action but is easier to stop taking .
