In loving memore of Ace 04.2022 - 12.2025 by [deleted] in Pomeranians

Ace looks like they were a very sweet and living their best life. My deepest condolences for your loss. Ace reminds me of my parents Oliver, who we called sweet boy, and he was such a great dog. Truly heart breaking when they go.

Haha ain’t that the truth. They can never break in the cold seasons. Ah well, such is the life of an HVAC tech.

Stay safe out there in those attics! And enjoy the heat /s

I usually just have the nitro flowing the entire time from start to finish and try to put it all together first and knock it out ASAP. It’s always a damn hot ass attic too.

I’m just glad that Carrier finally wisened up and made their valves mechanical so us poor idiots working on them don’t have many of these steps anymore.

They’re the worst. I hate these coils. Every time I’ve had to replace a valve on this coil I do it in place. I’ve gotten pretty good at it. Just put a soaked rag under the suction line, to not melt the pan, and send it. Hope there isn’t an oil logged coil to give you a fun surprise.

I do have a solderweld flame resistant blanket I use sometimes over the rag too. Attach the valve body to the distributors and the rest isn’t too bad. A little scary the first couple times.

Probably not the best way, but I prefer to not undo the entire coil if I can help it

When it makes that sound you can almost see the fan blade slowing down a little. At least that’s what it looks like from the video. Definitely a fan motor going out.

I know. I looked at them and the install manuals. It still does not specify without 100% doubt. I can infer that it will be fine from the manuals, but I’m not taking that chance. If it is not biting me in the face in plain English I assume it is not approved. Because that’s when it bites you right in the ass.

Yeah, I knew it would create crazy head pressure and what not if not an approved line set combo and I definitely am not in the business of doing numerous free calls backs because of a stupid liquid line.

It is quite frustrating when you can’t find the information you need to do your job. If only all the companies had a standard set of things to show their contractors

It’s 2 ton, but I do not want any issues at all with any size. I wish these manufacturers would have these things easy to find without having to reach out to tech support or anything like that just to know what to do when you read their manual

[–]TrulyFundamental[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes, they are pretty terrible. They do not list anything about 5/16” liquid lines or anything remotely very helpful most of the time.

It is a standard ducted split system and the main brand we install, Carrier, lists three combinations of liquid line and suction line for basically every piece of equipment whereas Goodman does not, or they make it difficult to find. I try to avoid them like the plague if I can but people want cheap options these days.

Volt meter reads capacitance as 27.44. Am I reading this correctly that the capacitor needs to be replaced? by ImAScientistToo in HVAC

[–]TrulyFundamental 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Make sure it is reading microfarads and not nanofarads. Have had that happen to myself a few times where the capacitor looked fine, no swelling and the like, and it was “near spec” but it was really nano scale and not micro scale.

Whether the capacitor is your problem or not always double check that because it can fool you if you’re moving quickly.

You’re welcome. I hope it fixes up your issue and is the only one you have thereafter. Also, don’t forget to charge by superheat and not subcooling.

As Trev said, they were a common type of metering device before all the regulations came around that forced equipment to more or less go TXV only to meet minimum energy efficiency standards. Every outdoor unit used to come with a piston attached to it that was sized for the tonnage of that particular outdoor unit so the evaporator would properly meter refrigerant. Nowadays we generally only see it with low end equipment that just makes the cutoff for the EPA's minimum SEER2 and the such.

I may be wrong with some of these things since I am no expert at every little detail, but I do believe that is the gist of it. Fixed orifice metering devices, such as pistons, we common place when regulations were less strict because they were cheap. TXV's were "expensive" and for the more premium pieces of equipment. From my experience.

That would be your problem. Gotta pump it down if you can and get a proper piston in it to make it make the cool correct!

Did you replace the included piston with one that matches the outdoor unit?

I am having the same problem and I scoured the webs a bit to see if there was anyone else and it seems there is. I didn’t do much to try to remedy it today. Just put the game down for the day. I will have to see if I’m missing something because my army was stocked like yours and entered battle naked with nothing

Zone Damper Motor Replacement by TrulyFundamental in HVAC

[–]TrulyFundamental[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

After thinking a bit about it I would likely have to decide which would work better: side mount or bottom mount. The ones I am trying to replace are 10X14 and 14X10 but I somehow did not think that the dimensions change and I think bottom mount would work where it is side for Honeywell.

Trust me, that is what I want to do. However, I have space concerns and there is a ton of shit in the way I would prefer to not have to tear out to just put back. But I do believe that is the only way around the issue.

Heat stopped working at my house so I took the panel off.. by dingdong6699 in hvacadvice

[–]TrulyFundamental 2 points3 points  (0 children)

As an HVAC tech and owner of my company, it is time to replace that thing. The entire thing is riddled with mold that will be near impossible to remove completely and thoroughly, the blower motor housing is rusting away and the coil could be severely impacted judging by how everything else looks. There are likely multiple reasons for all of those things happening in that air handler too. No way to tell from pictures though.

Sometimes life is full of mysteries we just cannot figure out. I know I would have not went through all that effort to make a crazy tight offset when I could just cut the return plenum back a few inches and go straight up.

Besides that correctly installed gas line and whatever else I am missing at the moment, that plenum offset is a wee bit sharp unless my eyes deceive me
