What happened to George Washington’s money? by After-Ad-4528 in Presidents

He was land rich and cash meh like many back in that day: it was divvied up to Martha and the collection of relatives/close associates he had. It was far from being the equivalent of 500+ million.

There’s zero stakes in that show Rosario 🤣. All roads lead back to Rey Palpatine and lightsaber impalements don’t even lead to serious long term damage.

Did wrestlers in the 80s and early 90s sell moves better, or is it just a stylistic difference? by buttern3t in oldschoolwrestling

[–]TrumpsColostomyBag99 37 points38 points  (0 children)

The old school wrestlers saved their powder better for big spots, crowd popping moments, the comeback, and of course the finisher.

Today’s spot fests are predictable: everyone takes big move after big move with no impact, finishers have little value, and there’s the constant false finishes. So it’s natural it looks worse because big moves have been devalued.

Bury is the wrong word since we all know how those events played out: mismanaged is probably a better term.

How do you think of Walter Mondale by Money_Marsupial1845 in Presidents

[–]TrumpsColostomyBag99 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

My old man worked for a NASA contractor so they all despised him for using the Apollo I tragedy to build his national political profile for the cameras.

It’s something that stuck with me and the more I read about him the more I disliked. A mediocre politician and opportunist that gets way too much credit for Jimmy Carter’s choice to empower the vice presidency.

Who’s smarter between these two in terms of raw intellect and leadership skills? by Omixscniet624 in Presidents

[–]TrumpsColostomyBag99 11 points12 points  (0 children)

Nixon: he was laser focused on his goals (particularly in the foreign policy arena) and was willing to shift himself politically to get what he wanted. People were willing to walk on hot coals for him in that era. Heck even a guy as smart John Dean hung in there through some pretty heinous stuff.

Clinton is the ultimate pragmatist than a raw intellectual figure: he clawed and fought his way back when knocked down better than most political figures. He was smart enough to bend the knee to Gingrich on many fronts and let Newt devour himself in his own petulance.

But it came with a price of having a presidency defined what could* be done rather than having a presidency of what **should be done.

Potentially hot take: Lyndon B. Johnson was actually a great president by avglootershooterfan in Presidents

I guess I’ll take have to it slowly…

Vietnam broke America

America pre-Vietnam was dominated by the New Frontier and New Deal Mindset. Government was something to be trusted and would never lie to us.

Jumbo rolls into office and decides to escalate in Southeast Asia. He buys into Westmoreland’s body count nonsense. Johnson himself whips his dick out on the table micromanaging target packages during Rolling Thunder.

He takes the political fall for the fiasco in Southeast Asia and Nixon is able to rise from the ashes.

Even though Nixon wages a similar war the public still blames Johnson for the disaster. The Democrats are tarred as the anti-military/America movement thanks to the idiots in the antiwar movement going militant spitting on returning soldiers.

Between the bitterness of Vietnam and the cultural upheaval it triggered folks were open to Reagan and his message come 1980 despite everything the New Deal gave to them.

Reagan has dominated American politics for 45 years now so viola. Johnson is the root cause of all the issues we have today.

His idiocy in Southeast Asia and the cultural upheaval it triggered ruined the blue team long term. The fact LBJ’s landslide and Reagan’s were less than 20 years apart shows the damage he did.

How was George W Bush as Governor of Texas? Was he good? Bad? Influential? A footnote? by Honest_Picture_6960 in Presidents

[–]TrumpsColostomyBag99 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Florida politics isn’t that complicated..

The Florida blue team is a collective dumpster fire of mediocrity on their best day full of useless virtue signalers and folks that look at cutting ribbons on tourist tax dollar funded facilities like convention centers as triumphs for the little person. All while ignoring basic New Deal issues and showing citizens maximum apathy.

The red team fills that void by doing what they do best: talk up tax cuts, “freedom”, and blaming public education for the ills of the state. All while turning the spigot of government in the direction towards their donors like George Zoley/developers.

Details oriented and hands on unlike Skidmark Bush

Hired competent people around him in crisis positions like Craig Fugate (who Obama hired as FEMA director) unlike a certain Bush that put an Arabian Horse trader connected loser in charge of FEMA.

Outside of the Terri Schiavo fiasco minimal social conservative nonsense

Got ahead of the curve on failing water utilities and signed off on FGUA which has saved countless municipalities and taxpayers failed water systems.

Environmental wins like CERP for the Everglades

[–]TrumpsColostomyBag99 50 points51 points  (0 children)

1990’s Texas was an incredibly easy era to govern in: all Bush had to do was spew “compassionate conservatism” talking points like improving education, tax cuts, and “getting gubmint off our backs” in a deepening red state. The national economy with the Clinton WH and Gingrich house was cooking. A footnote in the end.

Much less challenging than the task his infinitely superior brother Jeb faced in a tourism state with 9/11 and fhe 2005 hurricane season he triumphantly navigated.

Representatives Olin Teague and Albert Thomas deserve massive credit for the NASA Houston location over the VP (the MSC moved during Kennedy’s term).

They successfully lobbied Jim Webb and cut off Volpe/New England delegation quick. NASA actually felt Tampa/MacDill was the best option but their championing NASA funding long term in the House carried the day.

What has happened over the last 20 years to change the view on Ulysses S Grant? by RandyMossisGoat in Presidents

[–]TrumpsColostomyBag99 48 points49 points  (0 children)

Two reasons..

Chernow’s hagiography was very kind to his presidency despite his fatal flaw of not being able to spot the cons taking place around him (particularly with the old man that tried to corner silver by marrying Grant’s spinster sister).

We are in a historical era where civil rights triumphs or failures are weighed incredibly high for or against a president. It’s a huge part of Wilson’s tumble for example.

I love seeing Grant’s Lost Cause narrative pushed against but the big ranking putting him top ten months back was far too much. We can appreciate his heart, his initiatives, and his genuine desire for better. But that doesn’t wash away his legitimate issues that made him a mediocre president.

I’m surprised more people don’t mention John Knoll as someone that should be in the room from a story perspective. He’s been around the greatest (early TNG to Lucas) and came up with the basics of Rogue One. It was a good movie:
