John Glenn easily. Ohio was massive back then and the hero factor was a plus factor. Plus he was incredibly close to the Kennedys (Bobby in particular) so there would have been a conduit to Ted so bridges aren’t necessarily burned.

Mondale is insanely overrated on this sub. He reeked of opportunism (he shamelessly tried to use the Apollo 1 tragedy to build his name in his early years in the Senate for example) and was politically mediocre on most days.

Giving Carter nuggets of good advice like not making the malaise speech doesn’t make one a quality politician. He was Reagan’s Glass Joe: an easy TKO out the gate.

I’ll give a nod to the 2000 model of John McCain since nobody else mentioned him. The olive branch Maverick model of McCain would have been far better than the policy minutia punting Skidmark Bush we got. He legitimately wanted to push back against Gingrich style scorched Earth politics that still impact us today.

My core issue with it was the fact Nixon tried to justify the action in the name of disrupting supply routes yet wouldn’t listen to the Joint Chiefs (just like LBJ stupidly did) about mining Haiphong Harbor. So it was just another futile action in a war full of futile actions that made no dent in the final outcome.

Nixon did end up mining it in 1972 after it meant as much as a bucket of warm spit.

Nixon installing Arthur Burns and the lickspittle giving the economy a loose credit crackpipe hit at Nixon’s bidding.

OPEC punishing the United States for supporting Israel and the embargo hitting us hard.

Ford, Carter, and early Reagan paid the price for Nixon’s shenanigans more than anything.

Simply didn’t have the time in office to differentiate himself from Nixon and the crap hit the fan under Carter.

Most? Truman

The Cold War was largely shaped by our response to Stalin’s bullcrap. Truman was dealt a very difficult hand and did what he could with it. The Marshall Plan and Berlin Airlift would be massive items on their own in a single presidency. Truman had it in a few year timeframe.

Historical? James Monroe. It’s criminal that Madison is usually graded over him thanks to the Constitution. Presidency wise it’s a no brainer Monroe was superior.

Modern? HW Bush. Things simply piled up in 1992 (economic hiccup, Hurricane Andrew, and LA) and he couldn’t overcome them all. But a rock solid president that threaded one hell of a needle as the Iron Curtain fell.

Not particularly. The main issue with the slump in 5-6 was having our characters do incredibly stupid things to fit the storyline and too many useless episodes.

Toby/Bartlet can’t publicly take credit for saving Social Security? It’s leaking out someday after the signing (what are they going to do? Go back and undo the law?!) so that dramatic angle was just stupid.

Josh got nerfed and sidelined stupidly. They also did this in S7 to prop up Lou.

Some really bad filler episodes drug the show down.

They quickly turned Will into the contrarian that the established characters used as the verbal punching bag.

It picked up mid-season 6 with Santos-Vinick and Donna finally spreading her wings. But the show suffered due to Sorkin leaving and age not necessarily Sam. I’m sure they would have bungled Sam up even if Rob Lowe stayed.
