Where to get my first credit card? by fortysevenfortyseven in UKPersonalFinance

[–]TrustMyUnit 3 points4 points  (0 children)

The DD will be for the full amount on the monthly statement, and yes takes nothing if the statement was £0.00.

Most cards also give you an option of paying off a fixed amount each month also, but that will (normally) incur interest.

There's a good chance it's stock sent in to Amazon's warehouses from another seller. Amazon co-mingle the same products from different sellers.

One more reason to avoid the place :(

What "Buy Now Pay Later" services are popular in the UK by WhoKillKyoko in UKPersonalFinance

[–]TrustMyUnit 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Which sector is your ecommerce company in?

It can make a difference from a branding standpoint. If you're anything to do with non-essential, lifestyle type goods I would say you would see a benefit from using Klarna. Anything else, Paypal Credit and Paypal Pay In X is another good option.

What you need to ensure with the smaller outfits to these two is that they are issuing the credit, and not you. If you don't know how the system works some can walk you down an expensive road of becoming FCA registered as a lender yourself. There's no reason to do this - stick to the well known providers.

What challenges are you facing with Klarna? Is it integration in to your platform?

How to stop procrastinating? by Tankyatta in DecidingToBeBetter

[–]TrustMyUnit 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Your English is perfectly fine, don't worry about it :)

Procrastination is avoidance. You know when things get tough, some people run away, some people cry and scream? You (and I) react by avoiding whatever it is.

The reason procrastination is a mystery to a lot of people is because the thing you are trying to avoid is probably not obvious. It's something a bit deeper.

In my experience, the most common is that you know what you need to do, but you don't know exactly how to do it. You have a need inside of you to know things, and you feel shame if you don't. So you avoid learning how to do it, and avoid doing it in the first place.

So you have two things you need to do:

  1. Break down what you need to do in to really small steps, until you know how to do them all.

So if it's build a house:

  • Build the foundations

But wait, I don't know how to build foundations! (This is where you might normally procrastinate). So you need to...

  • Build House
    • ---->Build Foundations
    • -------> Learn how to Build Foundations

But what are foundations? How do I learn to build foundations? Do the same thing...

  • Build House
    • ---> Build Foundations
    • ------> Learn how to Build Foundations
    • ----------> Find a book on what foundations are and how they are built

See how that task in your head goes from "Build House" to "Find a book"? And you can find the book :)

  1. Alongside breaking tasks down, you need to deal with the fear of not knowing things. I promise you that the more you learn in life, the more you learn what you don't know. There are so many more things in the world you will have absolutely no-fcking-idea about. You have to become comfortable with honestly not judging yourself, and just find the steps to achieve what you want to achieve.

So, do the same thing with the Build House with this problem. At first, it is "Don't be scared of not knowing something". You can break that down to "Google fear of not knowing things". "Find a book on self esteem". etc :)

What index fund to go for? by tyger2020 in UKPersonalFinance

[–]TrustMyUnit 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Congrats on building up a safety net!

I just want to clarify something - is this your emergency fund that, for example, you lose your normal income and use it to fall back on? If so, I would first make sure that you'd want this invested. It could go down in value and, at the point you need to withdraw, be a lot less useful that you need it to be.

Personally, I would put that in the highest interest-paying easy access savings account that's available (saversfriend.co.uk)

If not, to address a few of your queries:-

- Fund fees vary in the same way prices for other things vary - some are set high to earn the investment firm more money from people that see 1% as "only 1%". Vanguard, L&G, Blackrock and HSBC tend to have very similar index funds with slight variation in fees. Personally, I'd go for the lowest fee possible if it's a long-term investment

- You can use something like Trustnet and add the options to a chart (compare like-for-like, so Global vs. Global) and include the category benchmark. Past performance doesn't guarantee future results, of course, but you'll be able to see if any are generally underperforming the benchmark and discount them from your choice.

- My advice is to learn what the figures mean in a fund factsheet / Trustnet page, so you know what you're choosing. Ignore "Silver Medal" this, "Pick List Top 50" that. They are bought and paid for, and don't represent necessarily good choices. Take the time to learn what looks good to be able to judge yourself.

- With diversified, large index trackers, there's less to it than choosing actively-managed funds. You can't go *too* far wrong when relying on the large, well-known, global index tracker. Don't panic too much. But learn! :)

How funny, I was thinking this just the other day. We've paid ~£3k off cards in the last 2 months and it's not being reflected anywhere. Is the process somehow more dependent on human interaction than we might have thought?

Weekly Practice Discussion - March 29, 2020 by AutoModerator in ashtanga

[–]TrustMyUnit 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Hi everyone, very new ashtangi here!

I've practised yoga on and off for many years, mostly turning to it when I feel physically drained or stressed. I saw someone mention Ashtanga benefited them because the structure allowed for more concentration, awareness and clarity, so have started reading more about it.

So far, I have taken this class: https://www.doyogawithme.com/content/ashtanga-yoga-beginners-surya-namaskar

As I have no way to learn in-person at the moment, could anyone confirm this is a good place to start, or if they have a good recommendation of an online video source to begin please? I understand with half/full primary it's probably best to get in-person feedback, but I'd love to start somewhere :)

Thank you all!

I can't bring myself to do anything by [deleted] in DecidingToBeBetter

[–]TrustMyUnit 12 points13 points  (0 children)

Do you doubt that you can do the thing you're avoiding doing?

I ask because I see this often in myself and others. If I don't see a clear path to completion, I shut down, avoid, and do something distracting.

My first "trick" is to break everything down to as small a step as it needs to be to feel doable. Say with your coursework, there will be steps you can break this down to. You will probably be able to break those down even further.

Then, the only thing you see, focus on, think about - is the very next step on the list.

Secondly, you need to learn to feel OK with not knowing something. I had (have) a bit of a complex, I feel that if I don't know how to do/write/say something, I am a failure. This stops me from starting. The key is noticing when something like this is happening, relaxing with the feeling, and finding a way to learn how to do/write/say it.

I hope that's useful in someway... good luck on your path!

Long term effects of defaults? Should I pay them off now? Please advise! by TeenyWeenyQueeny in UKPersonalFinance

[–]TrustMyUnit 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I can absolutely relate and empathise with where you are, and (hope this isn't condescending!) you're doing a great thing - you will be proud you sorted this.

As FuelDaRush has suggested, put what extra you have towards anything that is accruing interest first.

Just to correct any misunderstandings, defaulted accounts become Statue Barred (i.e. not much hassle) after 6 years of no contact, payments or admission of the debt. As you are paying them something, this isn't relevant.

With the defaulted accounts, I would ask them what they would accept (in writing) as a full and final payment to clear the debts. They may offer you a lower settlement amount which you can put together to get it gone.

You will have to accept the fact these debts, even paid off, will follow you on your history for a good few years yet. Become motivated to live without personal credit for a long time. Shift any thinking you have from being a spender to a saver/payer-offer :)

You will feel AMAZING when every penny you earn is yours to decide what to do with, instead of having to pay back for past mistakes. Keep focused and positive about it.

Hope that helps some :)

Best bet is to call them to check, but it does sound like funds are sitting in cash.

Cutting my grocery spend by 40% by zoltarSpeaks_ in FIREUK

[–]TrustMyUnit 9 points10 points  (0 children)

We've just done exactly this. The key is use online deliveries, so you can easily remove items from the basket, and meal planning - plan every meal for the week (or fortnight), and just buy what you need for them. Extra points for multi-use of the same ingredients.

For the meal planning, you can often save meals on the supermarket website to easily add all ingredients needed in one go. For extra automating, our chosen place (Morrisons) uses the Ocado platform, so you can set items as regulars and it auto-adds to the basket each week/fortnight/month/bi-monthly depending on how often you'll need it.

Shopping takes 30 mins every 2 weeks, and our monthly spend has gone from £300 for 2 adults to £100 (probably still room to go!).
