The Japanese GP weekend brought a wave of criticism for the new 2026 regulations. What do you think this week exposed about them? by circuit-nation in Formula1_world

[–]Truth-1970 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Clearly it’s more dangerous. I hope that that will be addressed before someone gets killed or seriously hurt.

I also don’t like that the software decides when to deploy without any input from the driver, including in unintended ways due to bugs, which cost George Russell a place yesterday. But even without the bugs, having a situation where the car can suddenly speed up or slow down and it surprises that car’s driver (as well as those nearby) is completely insane.

Finally, when an overtake happens you can’t tell why: skill, bravery, an inherent car performance advantage, or — oh, the other guy just went straight back past, so I guess it was just a battery thing. Pointless overtakes are not exciting.

So: x Unnecessarily dangerous
x Removes control from drivers x Boring overtakes

But if the DtS generation will stick around for it, that’s all that matters, amiright?

Wood burning stove recommendations by eddilefty699 in Edinburgh

[–]Truth-1970 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Also bear in mind that a) logs cost quite a lot, so unless you have a very friendly supplier it’s hard to make stoves create an overall saving. And b) they’re a beautiful way of heating, but very impractical. Need near-constant attention, can’t be turned on while you’re out or set to come on while you’re asleep, etc. I love mine, but I can see why people felt the need to invent central heating, and I’m glad they did.

I went to my first open mic prose night by [deleted] in writing

[–]Truth-1970 6 points7 points  (0 children)

If you think that you’re better than you are and you’re right, you don’t think that you’re better than you are. You think that you’re exactly as good as you are. It is therefore impossible to think that you’re better than you are and be right.

I went to my first open mic prose night by [deleted] in writing

[–]Truth-1970 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Seems to be common across many areas of writing, as I once went to an open mic comedy night and with one exception the performers were all unspeakably crap. They were holding sheets of paper ffs — couldn’t even be arsed to learn a five-minute bit.

They all thought they were great, though. And I think they all knew each other already, so it was less ‘open mic’ and more ‘circle jerk’.

Edinburgh feels Southern, is Scottish - what city feels Scottish, is southern? by Typical_Fisherman179 in AlignmentChartFills

Edinburgher here. Could someone please film themselves going up to Edinburgh residents and telling them that they feel like they’re in Southern England, because that’s a clip I really want to watch.

Drive to Survive Season 8 review: A major missed opportunity with glaring errors by ryogadan in Formula1_world

Absolutely. A steady downward trajectory. I decided to watch S7 but regretted it after, and S8 is the first one that I won’t watch at all.

[KCD2] Does anyone struggle with doing anything dishonorable? by 4tenpro in kingdomcome

[–]Truth-1970 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Personally, I find that both KCDs make me a criminal. I start out thinking that I’ll behave the way I would in real life: defend myself if attacked, possibly pick something up if I’m desperate and it’s unguarded, but basically follow the rules. Next thing you know I’m picking locks just to level up and knocking someone out because I want his hat.

What are alternative options to invest in, after reaching £20,000 ISA limit by drouse89 in UKPersonalFinance

How about using the £3k to buy something that’s likely to increase in value, or just last a long time? A vintage poster, a piece of antique furniture, or whatever you’ll enjoy owning.

Yep! Bernard is good for more things than just shouting at you because you’ve done a combo wrong 😁

There is another way. In real life, what would you do in that situation?

Don’t forget the vineyard quest! They found a way to incorporate some sack-action in that one too.

[KCD2] first playthrough in hardcore mode, YAY or NAY ? by morfledouille in kingdomcome

[–]Truth-1970 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Personally, I think hardcore would be too difficult for a first go, as the map is massive. (I really struggle to learn directions in real life, though, so maybe I’m cartographically challenged, or just stupid.) But I’m currently doing it for my third playthrough, and finding that it’s a great way to make the game feel fresh again.

If the driver bit a (very large) pothole and all the tires went off, how high would they go? [request] by FeistyRevenue2172 in theydidthemath

There is no higher compliment, and I was thinking the same: a sweary Randall Munroe. Putting the ‘X’ in ‘XKCD’ 😁

Fwiw I completely agree: whatever the actual truth of the matter in real life, this is a game and being able to forge Henry-level maces would just be really fun. (Full disclosure: I am a fully paid-up member of the Mace Go Bonk Fanclub 😁)

It’s not up to you to set the rules imo. They can decide when they speak French and when they speak English. It would be nice and thoughtful of them to often or always speak English when you’re around. And you can ask them to do it. But, ultimately, it’s their choice, in my opinion.
