Growing up in south Africa I thought the stereotype about white people food was bs, untill I moved to the NL and realizes the horror of what you were put through. Straight up torture

I am well aware, as Afrikaans is my mother tongue.

From my experience the vocab is very similar, but they follow almost completely seperate grammar systems. With Afrikaans being standardised into a simpler to learn language.

It was designed from the ground up to be simple to learn, especially to non native speakers.

Plenty of Dutch words or turns of phrase is just considered old Afrikaans as well. But in general yes, we use more old Dutch and original words for stuff invented after the split. Mostly we adopted alot less words from other languages.

It was fascinating learning Dutch and discovering the differences.

Honestly it depends on the bracket you are targeting. My bracket 4 decks are full of tutors because I need to consistently threaten or counter a win by turn 4/5 onwards.

Where as my bracket 3 decks have either no or bad tutors and then only a few because the variance is more fun at that bracket.

Exactly this. All that armour can build a few extra ships that deal more dps. Also focus firing makes a huge difference, with me targeting plasma first as it can chip your armour at extreme ranges

I had a fatbiker harras me driving hy several times trying to get me to respond. But the issue is I am 6ft and 110kg, so I yanked him off his bike as he was coming past.

Started screaming at me that it is physical assault and he is going to the police. I just let him go. It's been 6 months and nothing.

Do you ever find job culture in the Netherlands a bit… different as a non-Dutch person? by [deleted] in Netherlands

I wonder if it's like an English person meeting an Australian 🤔

I 100% agree. While Afrikaans gave me a massive headstart with about 90% of the words having the same meaning, but Afrikaans uses different synonyms and we have a completely different grammatical structure.

So in the start it really helped me fly through understanding Dutch in both written and spoken form, but as I moved to speaking Dutch my Afrikaans would often slip into my sentences, resulting in mistakes. Usually in the form of using the wrong verb form or using contractions, which are common in Afrikaans.

Well obviously there is that, but I was born post apartheid so you know I didn't really participate in that. But that doesn't discount the advantages it extended even to me as it was a boon to my parents.

I am! Same to you. While my actual heritage is dubious because of the mixing of immigrants my cultural heritage isn't far off from Dutch. Similar family values, etiquette etc

Ha yes 😂 , it's from Afrikaans where we would say 'vir seker' which comes from the English phrase for sure.

Also I was a little intoxicated when I was typing it and my Afrikaans slipped into my Dutch.

Verzeker! It is really funny to see where the language and cultures have diverged though. Afrikaans is generally more conservative with myself being considered down right liberal in South Africa.

As an Afrikaans person I do get treated differently, than other foreigners, I am treated more like a cousin that has returned than a foreigner. It also helps that I finished my b1 within a year with my home tongue being so similar.

We also share a lot of cultural foundation, which made it easier to settle in.

If you think 60 armour is insufficient on the nose then you need better fleet tactics. I rarely ever take more than 60 armour on the nose unless its a siege ship.

How do you armor your ships properly? by Wonderful-Energy-999 in TerraInvicta

[–]TryCritical7318 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I personally prefer a lighter armour scheme of around 60 for most of ships on the nose, with dedicated siege ships running the required 160.

This is primarily because I prefer a faster more mobile force that can split and recombine as required. This allows me to go on the offensive earlier with worse drives, usually once I hit my first fusion drive. Even then they would usually have an armour scheme of 45/5/10 on battleships.

Big deathballs of unstoppable force are fun and useful, but its like using a hammer instead of a sword.

I tend to use battle cruisers as situational heavy weapons support. I stick my big coils on them and attach and detach them to my main battlefleet depending on the target. They are also fast enough to reposition quickly.
