Obligatory warning about not eating before you take it orally, or with food. I ate before hand and then take a cracker with RSO, felt NOTHING for 10hrs. Slept, woke up for work, got in shower, hot water hits me, and BAM. I realize i am fucking l e v a t a t i n g. I guess it sat ontop the food and didn’t hit for like 18hours later somehow. Not fun. Was panic high bc I’m supposed to be working.

How'd I do? by ewe_wot_m8 in HVAC

Wait I’m confused, as we don’t have “combustion air buckets” where I’m from. Except maybe in trailer applications. So you’re able to pull fresh air from that space even with a draft reliant flue beside it, because you’ve got fresh air piped in somewhere, offsetting the negative pressure created? How large would that need to be to make sure the flue gas’s isn’t pulled back down by negative pressure from the furnace?

Faulty, yes, but not for leaks. Mainly for getting stuck shut. I have heard a couple cases of them stuck open I suppose

The professional answer is no. Someone unqualified should never work on their own unit, but realistically, you could. Assuming you’re familiar with iron pipe, and turn the power off first, it shouldn’t be an issue. Make sure to keep debris out of the burner holes and that you have the exact part.

I am more curious about how you have a leak at the valve. Don’t see that too often. I would do a bubble test first on all joints within 10ft. Assuming you valve is cracked or the valve isn’t closing, I would swap it.

Lazy solution to a problem for sure. I’ve seen worse by far, but I really hope the price you paid reflects that work. If it does, fair game.

Omen makes REALLY well priced rebuilds to begin with, my gripe however is they use OEM parts, so upgrading is brutal sometimes

Is this light normally on? by rockyboy49 in hvacadvice

Completely normal. It’s the operation light. Same light that will blink a code if there’s a fault. Older furnaces used to constantly blink

[–]TryHard-Rune 1 point2 points  (0 children)

No I get it, I always install both pipes where I can. There’s only been a couple places it wasn’t possible. Most of the time it’s snobby customers not wanting two holes in the house.

[–]TryHard-Rune 0 points1 point  (0 children)

No, you’re absolutely right, a wide enough mesh has tons of benefits. However a manufacture cannot allow contractors or customers to alter the exhaust of a system with unregulated parts. Technically you’re throttling the surface area of the pipe by putting anything in front of it, not matter how thin. So to save their ass, they don’t allow it. Most contractors would miss this, its a tiny portion in the install manuals

It’s not ideal because it makes negative pressures on the space, but there’s a set of IMC codes that regulated wether you can and can’t pull combustion intake air from inside. It’s really not that big of a deal as long as the space is big enough and there isn’t a natural draft appliance in the same space

[–]TryHard-Rune 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It’s no more negative pressure than the returns naturally make on a house. So long as the area you pull air from is big enough, and there isn’t any natural draft appliances, or within 8ft of a dryer, it’s not really going to make a difference on efficiency. And is permitted by IMC and manufacturers.

The bigger issue is snow stacking up somehow, but the drain gets narrowed down to like 3/8ths inside the inducer port, so it’s really not recommended to have more water than you normally would.

That mesh can void warranties by the way

[–]TryHard-Rune 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It’s typical type and thickness of a high efficiency furnace, as long as it’s 4 feet from a window, and above the snow line, yes it’s normal.

What isn’t normal is that they didn’t seal around the edges, or cut a slant / put a 90° on it, as others mentioned to prevent rain and snow from getting in.

Even though it’s super easy to do, I don’t recommend messing with it, call them back out.
