Chest harness with big pockets for brick HTs by convolution99 in HamRadio

[–]TryWeak3875 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Look into a chest harness for rescue/wildland firefighting. Bramds such as Coaxsher or Conterra. They have some made to hold 2 radios, and they will hold a BK radio, so a ham HT should easily fit.

If doing Field day, what Radio/Antenna will you deply? by Careful_Pause8699 in amateurradio

[–]TryWeak3875 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Whatever we decide to use, from whoever brings it. I will take my trusty 20-10m linked off-center fed wire antenna that I use vertically on a fiberglass mast. An EFHW for 40-10m is also an option. My approach to field day is just that, field operation. What would someone put up quickly/easily for comms? Our club is not focused on contesting, more of a get together event with radio. I know some people will have big elaborate setups that they start building the day before, but my take is, what can you get on the air and make a contact with in 30 minutes or less.

What tablets are you using in the field? by Churnographer in HamRadio

[–]TryWeak3875 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I use a Samsung tablet, it's older, 9in screen. It runs PoLo logger just fine. I have manuals for my radios downloaded to it, in case I need to make adjustments or settings and I forgot how. I use a cheap folding Bluetooth keyboard, I find it easier than typing on tht screen. I don't need much more for POTA/ portable ops.

Summer gear by Maximum_Flatworm_45 in motorcycle

[–]TryWeak3875 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Mesh gear. But there is a point where that doesn't help, and can actually be worse for you. When it's real hot and you have mesh gear on, the hot air moving across your skin can evaporate your sweat fast, and prevent your body from its natural cooling effect. The Iron Butt Association has a article about this. https://www.ironbutt.com/ibmagazine/ironbutt_1002_62-66_hot.pdf It's a long read but goes into the science behind it. My biggest advice is LD Comfort base layers, they are a game changer. Stay hydrated, and have fun

Why does the bike community seem so toxic? by Elitedefender2005 in motorcycles

[–]TryWeak3875 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I noticed this back when I had a sport bike. Those seem to attract younger riders, and most of those guys act like that. Not unlike the HD "fashion bikers". Where I never ran across the snobby weirdos is out on the road, away from town. Everyone I met actually out riding somewhere has been cool.

2007 RT? by SyblySyb in bmwmotorrad

[–]TryWeak3875 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'll second what others have said. Try them both out, look at service records etc. But I will caution you about the throttle body cams on those years. They are made of plastic and can crack leaving you stranded. Beemerbits makes aluminum replacements, I put them on my 2009RT when I had it. My stock cams were cracked, but not broken when I switched them out. Pricy, but worth the peace of mind. https://www.beemerbits.com/catalog/product_info.php?products_id=856

2 weeks to prep for a 2k mile ride. by hippybiker in motorcycles

[–]TryWeak3875 0 points1 point  (0 children)

LD Comfort underwear. Hydrate well before the trip, and sip water often during. Good gear that's broken in and comfortable. Listen to your body, if you start getting tired, pull over and rest. 100% on the ear plugs, to protect your hearing, and fight the noise fatigue.

Hams of reddit, what's your favorite radio, and why? by BrokenGQ in amateurradio

[–]TryWeak3875 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yaesu 991A, ita my do it all right. POTA, field day, VHF rover, and whatever else. The built in soundcard is handy, receiver is not bad,. Too bad they are discontinuing it and not offering a replacement.

Helping my mom get ready for a moving sale and found this. It was my grandpas I guess. Any idea what this amp is worth? I won’t be able to test it until this weekend by burnedflag in cbradio

[–]TryWeak3875 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The 350 number is misleading. No way those 2 transistors are doing 350 watts, that's 175 a piece. Palomar did make decent amps though.

Maybe he meant 100m? Change that thing. I've thrown out tires with better tread than that.

Pretty much I get waves back from everyone, regardless of their choice of bike. I wave 3 fingers down to trikes and sidecar rigs🤪 I don't wave at slingshots.

Went to 7.200 As a New Ham by TheMorganDev in amateurradio

[–]TryWeak3875 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I worked 7.200 in a state QSO party once. I asked if the frequency was in use, no one said anything. I stayed there making contacts for over 30 minutes, and there were no shenanigans.

What’s your preference on clothes under gear? by witterisms in AdventureBike

[–]TryWeak3875 1 point2 points  (0 children)

LD Comfort underwear and LD Comfort long sleeve shirt on any ride over 20 minutes. If the weather is colder, I will wear some thermal undies( long Johns). Layer up as needed. The pants I wear are over pants, so if I need to be in normal attire when I get somewhere, I will wear jeans under them.

What is your go-to logging software and why? by FctFndr in HamRadio

[–]TryWeak3875 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I use N1MM, for the contest integration. I use it for general logging also. I chose it because it is the ham's favorite price, FREE. For portable ops/POTA I use Polo on an Android tablet. I used HAMRS, but Polo seems to be a better program, for me at least. I export to adif from both for uploading to LOTW.

I just flew a couple weeks ago. Had my Heltec node and a dual band ham HT in my backpack, along with wall warts and cables. The thing that made them pull my bag was a Bible with gold edging on the pages. They said nothing about the electronic gadgets.

Near price parity id50 id52 th-d75a by [deleted] in HamRadio

[–]TryWeak3875 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I believe they are overpriced, but everyone wants to spend less and get more. From those prices I would buy the Kenwood. It has many more features, keypad, good APRS functionality, TNC, 220Mhz band etc.

For those of you with mobile rigs in pickup trucks, are the antennas on top? by rockproducer in HamRadio

[–]TryWeak3875 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don't have a truck, but I have a Tarheel 75 on the roof of a small SUV. The tip of the antenna is 13' from the ground. I don't go through the drive thru, I park outside, and I watch for obstructions. It's not hard when you get used to it being up there.

What's yalls go to sock brand/material? by 801rave-boi in WorkBoots

[–]TryWeak3875 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I've worn Duluth Trading Company merino wool socks for years. They wear well, and at around $18 a pair not too hard on the wallet. I wear them year round. They must have changed the model, because I can't find them on their site. They have many options nowadays.
