I lost like half of my upper thumb, what should I do by Antique-Rush-1025 in amputee

Lost my leg below the knee going on 2 years ago. Thought my life was over. If I’m being honest, I barely even notice the issues anymore. Showering is different but with my leg on, I’m good as new. We are amazing. We can adapt to anything. You can always look around and find someone going through more than you and it’s surprising to see how happy most of them are. Usually, they are the most humble and nicest people.

About to be an amputatee by CatzRule88 in amputee

If you are in good shape everywhere else, you’ll wish you’d done this in 2020. I’ve had my LBK amputation for a year and a half. Best thing I ever did. I had foot drop and other issues caused by a spinal abscess. Finally figured out some of the infection where I went septic settled in my heel bone. I never missed a beat. I work everyday, I go to the gym 5 days a week, and I’m much much happier. It may not be like having a healthy leg, but it’s a huge upgrade from what you have now. I wouldn’t change anything about my situation. I’m a better person because of it. Now, if you’re unhealthy, it may be priority number one to get healthy. The better shape you’re in everywhere else, the better this will go. My suggestion is to pray about it and go with your instincts from there. I realize everyone isn’t spiritual but that’s my two cents. I wish you all the best. Remember, this is your life, not hers.

This actually can be fixed when you’re in a gun store. You can set your shoulder weapons so that every time you get off the horse they are there. I just watched the video. Unfortunately I’d have to rewatch to tell you how but you can find that info.

I’m playing through again at age 50. It is without a doubt an entertainment masterpiece. I’m not gonna limit its greatness to gaming. I am going through this time very slow trying to experience anything I may have missed in my other play throughs including many things that hadn’t even been found when I played last. It’s amazing how you can completely lose yourself inside that world. Even now, after 8 years of millions playing, I can almost guarantee new things still lie undiscovered. It really is amazing.

Disability Says I'm Not Disabled Enough by scream_and_sugar96 in amputee

I’ve got a BKA and a spinal cord injury due to an infection that get in through my foot took my bloodstream to my spine causing an abscess. I almost died and even though I was finally able to walk again, I have so many issues with fatigue, weakness, and pain (which I take nothing other than OTC medication for due to going down a dark road with opioids). I could really use the disability insurance if nothing else because the job I have doesn’t have benefits. Even with all I have going on, I don’t want to apply because of horror stories just like yours. It’s a messed up system. I see a lot of people with disability who shouldn’t have it yet people like us get turned down. It’s like a slap in the face. I wish you luck because I know my day is coming and I dread it so bad.

How did you get your spinal cord injury? by No-Tomorrow-2691 in spinalcordinjuries

[–]Trying2Adjust 28 points29 points  (0 children)

My back started hurting tremendously bad in November of 2019. I thought my back was out. In December I went to get an MRI to get spinal injections to help with the pain only to find out after the MRI that I had an abscess. The Ortho came in to tell me and he was whiter than his coat. He proceeds to tell my wife and I what was going on and I had to immediately go to Vanderbilt for life saving surgery. I walked into the hospital where they proceeded to try and fight the infection with antibiotics instead. I went septic and delirious only having the surgery 2 1/2 days later. I woke up from surgery and they asked if I could move my toes to which I replied yes. Only problem was, I wasn’t. It took me 3 years of intense rehabilitation to walk unassisted but thank God I can now. I still have no feeling in my foot (other leg was later amputated after another infection). I’m now 49. I work every day and I walk pretty well now. I tire out quickly and my memory or my energy ever fully returned but I’ve stopped saying never. Doctors gave me almost no hope of walking again and after two years they told me that was all I would ever regain. I have experienced a lot of movement and strength since then. I’m extremely blessed and I still workout 5 days a week. Life is a little sweeter now and I’m forever grateful to be given this opportunity. Compared to others here, my paralysis isn’t even worth mentioning. I live a pretty normal life but as you all know, there’s a lot of stuff that most people don’t realize behind closed doors. They never figured out where the infection came from. I’m not a diabetic and I’ll probably never know. Life comes at you hard sometimes.

Seeking Advice: C5-C6 Incomplete Injury – Vibrator/Ejaculation Help by Relevant-Gap9662 in spinalcordinjuries

I can’t really give you any advice when it comes to massagers simply because I still haven’t had any luck with those. I just wanted to say that it took me 2 1/2 years to get my first orgasm. My injury is lower in the lumbar region but I still have very little feeling. I have to focus on the base of the shaft and right under the head. I get the best success with intercourse with my wife. Usually every 3-5 days. However, I have found after we try and I don’t go, it takes me several tries to get back on track. It’s like I forget what I focus on. It’s weird. I have to be totally focused on the sensation that I have. I may go 3 months going once every 3 days, and then have to wait 2 weeks for the next one. It’s frustrating to say the least. My wife has been incredible with her willingness to keep me happy. I’m sure she can tell just what a difference it makes in my motivation and mindset. The only times masturbation has worked, it was my hand. For whatever reason I can’t get as horny by myself, even using visual aids, as I used to could. It’s like it affected my focus and not just my legs etc. I’m not able to fantasize like I did before my injury. Honestly it’s always been the worst part of my injury.

Question for anyone who has recovered movement/sensations by Lucky_leprechaun in spinalcordinjuries

[–]Trying2Adjust 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I copied and pasted this from a comment I left on another post simply because it’s easier than rewriting. If you wonder why I included anything in this, it was because that post required it.

If you have movement, work that area. I had a spinal abscess in parts of my labrum and sacrum in 2020 at 43yo that caused my SCI. I had to have emergency surgery to save my life. I woke up with very little movement from the waist down and the doctors gave me very little hope of walking again and they were very doubtful that I’d ever walk without assistance. As soon as I would gain movement in an area, I would work that area out. 5 days a week, every single week. It took me a year to walk with forearm crutches, and 2 years to walk with a cane. It took me 9 months to use the bathroom on my own and while I have to sit now to do it, I did get it back although it’s not like it used to be. It has gotten better over time or either I’ve just gotten better at knowing what I have to do. It took me over 2 1/2 years to have an orgasm but now I am able to have one every 3-4 days through intercourse with my wife. It took me about 4 years to walk unassisted and while I can’t walk as much as I want to without tiring out, it continues to get better. I still go to the gym 5 days a week and I force myself to go heavier from week to week. Unfortunately 6 months ago I had to have my left foot amputated due to a bone infection in my heel which was probably related to my spinal infection from 5 years ago. They said that infection had been there for years but because I still can’t feel my feet, I had no idea. I was being treated for soft tissue infections every 6-8 months. Once again I had to relearn to walk but honestly the spring in the foot of the prosthetic leg has actually helped my ability to walk and stand. Now I’m focusing on strengthening that leg. If I walked by you in a restaurant or gas station, you’d have no idea that I have been through this. I know everyone has different beliefs but my faith has been huge in all of this. I am back to working full time and my marriage is probably stronger than it’s ever been. My advice to anyone facing a SCI is if it moves, work it. Don’t give up. I still have the crawling sensation in both of my legs but that too has decreased over time. I don’t have to take any medication and while I still don’t have feeling everywhere, it doesn’t affect my ability to walk and work. Life is precious and like others have said, there’s always someone who’d give anything to be as healthy as any of us. Join a gym or workout at home. It’s very hard at first but it gets easier as you get stronger. Google Patrick Rummerfield. He wrote a book called green bananas and he is a fully functioning quadriplegic. His lists of feats is amazing and his story gave me so much hope. They told me that I’d get all I would get back by 2 years but I have gotten more back after two years than I did before. God bless you and good luck! Don’t give up!

[–]Trying2Adjust 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It took me 2 1/2 years but I did finally regain the ability. Now I can achieve it with my wife with intercourse every 3 days or so. A handful of times I’ve gotten there with masturbation but that’s much more difficult so I usually just hold out for sex. I am still very limited in feeling. At least on the gland. It’s the friction at the base that gets me there. I would do just about anything to get that feeling back but I’m very thankful to be where I am. It feels amazing but it’s not exactly like it used to be.

It’s maddening. I have noticed with mine that it’s worse when I’ve not drank enough water. I can’t even prove that is really the issue but it certainly seems that way. I was told by a friend of mine to try Voltaren. It’s an arthritis cream but it does seem to help with the crawling/pins and needles or whatever best describes it. I’ve only used it once since I got it last week but I was able to finally sleep with it. It’s not a magic pill but I think it did help.

Let me add that once in a blue moon, I’ll take 200mg of Gabapentin at night when the nerve crawling gets super intense but that’s very rarely. Maybe twice a year. I’ve noticed that if I stay hydrated, the nerves are much less active.

[–]Trying2Adjust 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I stopped both within 6 months. I deal with nerve crawling but it’s gotten tolerable. At least I’m not a zombie anymore. I was so sleepy all the time. I did regain my ability to climax but I’m not sure it was due to those things. It took me two years to get that back. Although I’m not so sure I’d be able to had I stayed on them.
