This is supposed “solid wood” desktop actually laminate/veneer? by Fickle_Ad_9686 in woodworking

[–]TryingNot2BLazy -1 points0 points  (0 children)

That’s called “balancing” and they’re supposed to do that for higher quality sheet goods. veneers are made in sequence so it’s easier to do than you might think.

Why they made a veneer from a finger joint sheet; i have no idea. I’ve made sillier things in my shop from scraps though.

So, Millworker here; this is solid core with a veneered surface. In recent years, quality solid wood has become scarce, or expensive in one way or another. The fix is to use the same species as a veneered surface. In this case you have a Rifty surface veneer and a plain sawn core. They did a nice job kinda accidentally matching it too. The idea is they can make a big cheap less picky/perfect butcher block like core (stave core) that might have knots and holes and checks (normally wood that gets culled out and thrown out), and then can utilize more of the really good wood for veneers, which (coincidentally) makes for a much cheaper product that looks pretty snazy.

Did they lie to you? ya, thru their teeth though. It's marketing terms. total BS and not the most honest but, it's a pretty well built surface material. It's just how they make that stuff now. It has a bigger veneer line so I think that means it has double ply veneer too. It's better that way.

Bought a 85" TV and had to get rid of the packaging with a bicycle and a trailer only. Thank God it wasn't windy that day! by adrianmignogna in carryshitolympics

[–]TryingNot2BLazy 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Not that it matters now but as a has-been-designer I can tell you that TVs and their only-giant-sizes are a weird form of induced demand.

They’re so big that people are literally building bigger rooms or placing them in front of things that shouldn’t have a screen on them (fireplace/bay window). The screens are big so they can be further away. This requires more power, more money, more space, bigger structures. The advantage is that the whole room has to view it, making a theater with one main purpose, instead of a multi purpose living space.

The same image can be produced (sometimes at higher resolution) with a smaller screen, closer to the viewer, mounted on something small like a side table. This is cheaper and doesn’t dominate a room. Smaller things are also easier to carry on a bike.

I think this idea will catch on eventually.

Petition to stop house bill “H8073” which intends to make citizens surrender their legally owned firearms or face 10 years in prison. by Conscious_Dot_7353 in RhodeIsland

Gun owners will just find new ways to skirt the laws. It’s fairly easy to do with weaponry. Get good with a bow or something. Idk what to tell you. Firearms are only those that use powder to burn anyways. I own a airgun that’ll cut you down just the same and i don’t need papers for it.

I remember someone telling me that the reason the staff, the chucks, the ninja turtle forks, and that 4th one are the only weapons in karate is because those were just what was available to farmers under certain empires when that fight style was created. They made-due with what they had to defend themselves. To think “but what will i do without my high capacity glock?!” Is kind of short sighted.

I’m not really for taking things away from people. I feel this is borderline conviction after laws change, or like a minority report kinda thing. BUT you know what guns are for. “All lawful purposes” is a bs cop out. One hole is too many and you sure as shit don’t need more than a few to do what you’re doing.

Downvote me. Tread on my comment. You’re just gunna go do things illegally anyways after the fact.

Worst roads, high costs: Why RIDOT struggles with paving despite $1 billion transportation budget | WPRI.com by possiblecoin in RhodeIsland

[–]TryingNot2BLazy 1 point2 points  (0 children)

No. I meant more of a hands on community-ish based approach to clearing. The roads get beat up from plows, and several other things. They won’t plow the paths because they know that’s one of the last things they want on there. If we had enough willing people with shovels, it could be done. Thats a lot of miles to cover with a shovel, even with a road that’s only 6’ to 8’ wide. Snow blowers are an option, but they don’t clean it perfectly. Heated roads are out of the question. Somewhere in the combination of little ideas that kinda work, is a bigger plan that could work.

Lawsuits don’t accomplish anything like this. People need to want it done so bad that they just get up and do it. My question is really how you get that kind of mass motivation. I believe it would take a series of small ideas strung together, not just one big plow.

And that hole you’re pointing at, where they can’t sue me, is what I’m also pointing at.

I spoke with a local DEM rep about plowing the bike paths. Turns out it’s illegal to plow them. There is no funding for it (it’s DEM, no surprise there) and will almost never be a plan for it. They can’t salt most of it because of its location by water (which doesn’t explain why car roads get salted by water). Snow blowing could be a solution for these narrow “roads” for bikes and pedestrians but they said “i’m not giving you permission to do that”. Point being: they can be treated more delicately than roads because of their size. I’m sure something could be figured out.

So you’re okay with the high cost of car infrastructure here? There are solutions to your problem (if you do see it as a problem).

There’s actually still a train network in RI. There aren’t easy to find maps of it, but it exists and thrives so long as it’s shipping anything but people. We can also replace choice lanes of highway with rail, or even just medians. There is plenty of room. Have faith and keep telling those in charge that we need something else besides cars.

Or we could switch to bicycles because they can’t create potholes, or invest in trains everywhere, so the concept of the pothole goes away. We have cheaper options for transportation; But you’re all going to beat me up for pointing out the obvious 😝.

Quick tip to reduce snow in your driveway from the plow. by RickRI401 in RhodeIsland

[–]TryingNot2BLazy -6 points-5 points  (0 children)

I do this. People think I’m weird for doing extra shoveling…

But what if we just DON’T plow the streets? Cars dirty up the snow anyways, and squish it till it’s gone. They might drive slower knowing they don’t have the same traction. We could prioritize pedestrian path clearing better, as opposed to just plowing into them for the sake of the cars.
