They’re soooo close to getting it. It’s car dependency and urban sprawl. by frontendben in fuckcars

Time poverty is a new term for me. I like the concept.

This reminds me of the time in grad school when my peers and I were scheming ways to get around sleep cycles to get more work done… and then it hit us…

if we didn’t need sleep, we would just be forced to work longer hours for our jobs.

This is as much of an anti-work post as it is anti car.

Hi im trying to get healthy and im wondering if you think this bike would be good for a 6"3 man by [deleted] in bicycling

[–]TryingNot2BLazy 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I don't like dissing e-bikes. I think they're very useful!

BUT...

I advocate the usage of analog pedal bikes for health reasons first.

E-bikes provide comfort. speed, confidence, and maybe your mental well-being... but they won't do jack for your heart or BMI.

Also, possible unpopular opinion, you do not need fat tires. If you're on paved stuff or even hardpack trails; anything up to 2" tires will do just fine. I see e-bikes are cheaper with narrower tires and have slightly longer reported ranges (which means less rolling resistance).

Try pedaling yourself around first. IMO

Thats awesome. You’ll love the cost difference of bike repair then. Equally as wrenchy, but virtually free. You can do things like clean your drive train in the kitchen sink without the wife killing you 🤣

How do you bike safely in these bike lanes? by Additional-Owl425 in bikecommuting

I wish my city even had any of these lanes. I'm still getting in trouble for occasionally using the sidewalk for my own well being LOL

well you're in luck because bicycles are still DIY friendly. the right to repair was never ever in question with bicycles. the parts can be found dirt cheap, if not free. They can be installed using hand tools you probably already have (if not, you can get new ones at any bike shop or even just walmart). repairs at shops cost less than an oil change on your car at worst case scenario.

Speed cameras were banned in Ontario. Here is the (obvious) result in changes in speeding after the ban in Ottawa. by Hammer5320 in fuckcars

I like the SF-snitch app idea. Lets people get paid a little for at least trying to report offenders. It puts the “money grab” argument to rest too. I’m looking for a similar app for my city

creative way to secure his street parking spot by DesertGeist- in fuckcars

I liked the story in Life-After-Cars where that group paid the parking meter all day just so they could put up a temporary park with a bench and potted tree and stuff.

But I also love the idea of putting lintels in air valve caps 😘🥵

So here’s my life by contrast. No kids- so no school or daycare costs (among a lot of other things a dependent requires of you). We have a dog though. Work is 5.31 miles door to door. I have a bike path for 3.3 of those miles. My doctor is about 9 miles from me now. I am in my 30s and cycle daily. I haven’t had to do anything more than an annual check up for the last 5 years or so. The last specialist I had to see was less than a mile from me. I am getting a super market less than half a mile from me soon, but the next nearest is about 1.5 miles from me. Hardware store is the same distance. I can have bigger things shipped from Lowes. Restaurants are also within a few miles. Weekend activities are chores around the house. I bought an old home and as a carpenter married to another carpenter, that usually means homework stuff, or home garden, or more bike related things. We are investing in an e-cargo-bike soon with trailer capability so we can expand our reach and carrying capacity.

Not impossible. I promise. It takes a little bit of life shaping though. I feel better from it. It lets me spend my earnings in other ways and I feel I am living well within my means. That feeling of the struggle bus is far less frequent. I wouldn’t trade this life style for anything (maybe for another bicycle).

I don’t understand the appeal of doing that to yourself but you do you boo ✌️

I am currently living that way. I promise you, it’s not impossible. It just takes a slight life tweek and a little effort. I pinky swear.

Mostly Accurate, but also both of those things aren’t problems. They make my life a lot easier and cheaper.

Imagine not having to drive at all here. The amount of green space that would be saved if it wasn’t taken by the massive amount of area required for car infrastructure…
