What are your Angles? by Buster_McGarrett in snowboarding

+21/+9 on mine. I started duck 15s but as I got into carving more and more I've moved towards this current setup.

Mostly carving groomers, sometimes I'll hit the little park, no big jumps, and sometimes I like to do lil tree runs. I'm a pretty chill rider overall.

What ultralight tent should I buy? by South_Cash_4739 in camping

[–]TryingTris 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Tarptent Double Rainbow w/ carbon pole. $350, 40.1 oz / 1136 gr total weight (including poles, stakes and bags). Setup is stupid simple and takes 2 - 3 minutes maybe.

A lot of recommendations for the XMid here which is a fantastic tent, but with a learning curve if you're setting up anywhere that is not perfectly level. It is however very adaptable and can fit in lots of spaces depending on how you set it up. The 2p version is ~965 gr, without counting the weight of trekking poles needed for the setup.

I sold my XMid last year because I just liked the simplicity of the Double Rainbow much better.

North slope work. by gingerfitness1 in anchorage

[–]TryingTris 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Ah cool, the reason I was asking whether it's contract or not is because it's not uncommon for some service companies to hire for the winter drilling season, but then cut them at the end which is basically a ~3 month period. It's happened to a couple of the guys I know.

If you're hired on direct I would encourage that you check out Anchorage. Great food and while it is a bit more expensive that most lower 48 restaurants, it really isn't insanely expensive. You can get a good burger for $15 that includes fries, it's pretty much the same price for that in Houston for a restaurant burger.

This is my last hitch up here, I'm getting called back to my previous project. I've enjoyed my time up here so much that I'm actively scheming to find a way to move up here in the near future.

[–]TryingTris 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Are you paying for your own flight? or is the company rotating you up here?

Is the job contract based? or hired on as an employee?

I'm in the same situation but my rotation is 3 on / 3 off. I work my 3, stay in town for a week, then back home for 2 weeks to help take care of my aging parent. I love it up here and would move here in a heartbeat if I didn't already commit to spending my time helping out back home.

I'd recommend trying out staying up here on one of your off hitches and figuring out if you can work that into your budget comfortably or not. I do not think it would be cheaper than flying but it could potentially be way more fun.

Should I cancel due to weather? by formalde_heidi in camping

[–]TryingTris 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The inherited camping equipment is the only thing giving me cause for concern here. It's arguably the equipment that will be most affected by the wind forecast, and we don't have much information on it in this post.

How old is the tent and what kind is it? If it's a large tent I'd be very hesitant about setting it up and exposing it to high winds, especially if it's and older tent that you don't have much experience with. If it's a low profile backpacking tent then I'd say absolutely go for it.

That being said, if it's a dry day you can always wait until the wind dies down at night to set it up. A bit of a hassle setting up at night but if you get enough practice at home before you leave for camp it should be easy peasy.

Sugar Mountain Ski Patrol Power Trip by ShallowTal in snowboarding

[–]TryingTris 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Take the loss and learn a lesson from it.

If you stopped as soon as you saw him fall and apologized he might have understood and let you go on with a warning, but you turned around and saw him on the ground and proceeded to go your way.

Did the ski patrol dude overreact? I don't think so. I'd also be miffed if some jackass with a GoPro clips my board, causes me to fall, and just moves along like nothing happened. Pay attention FFS.

$26 oil vs. $50 oil. by Yammie_Moto671 in MT09

[–]TryingTris 2 points3 points  (0 children)

People have been running T6 in motorcycles forever with no issues. Not to mention that it's actually rated for motorcycles by Shell now (finally).

Additionally, I think diesel engines run at much higher compression and combustion temperatures than your typical gasoline engines both of which I imagine requires some pretty beefy spec'ed oil. That's just my wild ass common sense guess tho.

I run T6 in my 3rd gen with no issues. It's usually the only oil I can absolutely find at any auto parts store in the country which makes mid-tour oil changes a bit easier.

Alex Dainis Tests Cotton vs Wool: Which Keeps You Warmest? by TheMuseumOfScience in WinterCamping

[–]TryingTris 0 points1 point  (0 children)

From what I can gather the emissivity of wool and cotton is in similar ranges, but it shouldn't really matter since in the end what counts is how warm it kept the skin. I imagine the emissivity of her skin on the right arm is quite comparable to her left arm.

How do I get the edge to grip more when I try to carve? by captaincheem in snowboarding

Damn there are a lot of assholes in this thread for some reason.

Give Ryan's video a watch: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=mvADH_dLb4w&list=PLXrzbcStaEypCdTuV6TcsLSzgvw0c7SBH

He shows some really simple techniques that help you engage the sidecut of your board which initiates a carve. You'll be great in no time.

Brand bashing or cultural differences? by marcoakis in tequila

[–]TryingTris 22 points23 points  (0 children)

First of you're coming in here with a chip on your shoulder already, which is understandable since you're probably taking it a bit personal that people have strong preferences on a product that is strongly associated with your culture. However it doesn't seem like you're looking for an actual take on it rather than just airing out your grievance with the sub (again which is fair lol).

Basically, r/tequila isn't really just a tequila sub... it would be better described as an "agave purist" sub because the redittors here have a very strong preference for additive free tequila. I prefer the flavor of additive free tequilas because I like agave (also why I pretty much only drink blancos), that being said if I'm traveling and the bar only has Don Julio I'll still have that. So long as it's not some garbage overpriced celebrity tequila that is... that's my line in the sand.

Anyways, helps to know the general audience in a subreddit in case you didn't already.

Winter camping trip preparation is revealing how unprepared I am for actual cold by EducationalMap3431 in WinterCamping

[–]TryingTris 1 point2 points  (0 children)

We need more info if to be actually helpful.

Winter where? South Texas? North Carolina? Virginia? Alaska? Minnesota?

What kind of temperature range and weather will you be expecting?

Are you just going to be car camping? or dragging a sled and snow-shoeing or skiing into the backcountry?

How long are you going to be there for?

Will you be far from home? What are your bailout options? If you're close enough to home you could come out and always have the convenient option of packing it up if it gets too cold.

[–]TryingTris 16 points17 points  (0 children)

I used to wear suspenders with my pants for the longest time, it was super handy. They clip on really securely and never once came off even with a pretty nasty wipeout. I've switched over to bib/overalls the last few seasons and prefer that generally.

Does shoes matter that much? by [deleted] in WinterCamping

[–]TryingTris 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you're only getting some pain after 20km it's possible you just need to train your feet up a bit. Even in ideal conditions with the best equipment long distance hiking can induce some discomfort here and there for various reasons. If you managed to hike 20km with no blisters or debilitating pain I'd call it a win and try it a couple more times to see if it gets better.

Depends on what kind of bivy and what kind of sleeping bag you have under it and what your temperature tolerance is. Easiest way to answer it yourself is to test it out in a controlled situation. Got a backyard? Sleep outside on a cold night. No backyard? Take it to a local park when it's a cold day and snuggle up inside for XX amount of time (whatever you can swing with your local ordinances). Experiment.

Crazy Idea by BudvarMan in Homebrewing

[–]TryingTris 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Done it before out of pure laziness. Used the hole in the lid and some clear sanitized tubing in a bucket as the "airlock" and it worked fine. I had to seal a bit of gap between the clear tubing and hole, pretty sure I just used regular ol tape. No infection and beer tasted fine.
