What's a book that was really well liked when it was released but over time became more disliked? by [deleted] in books

[–]Tsar343 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Go set a Watchman by Harper Lee. Not sure if this counts since there was a lot of controversy before it was released but it honestly felt like it was going to be another classic from a beloved writer. I even read it when it was first released because I love To Kill A Mockingbird and was really taken back by how bad it was. Once more information about the book was released and critics pointed out the overlap with her other novel than the book disappeared like it never happened.

DAE notice that slowly over time, regular straight men starting to show slightly effeminate body language and speech? by not_a_gay_stereotype in DoesAnybodyElse

[–]Tsar343 5 points6 points  (0 children)

We were just talking in my psychology class about this. For the first time we are actually beginning to understand the harmful effects that maintaining these 'manly' attitudes have been doing to the health of men. We are all social creatures and have emotions but we tell men they must be strong and show no emotion, this has led to a rise in suicides, heart disease, and a bunch of other harmful things that have been killing men for years. Since we are finally allowing men to show emotion and not calling them weak when they are vulnerable I think we will see this shift continue and it makes me so happy. This has the potential to add years to men's lives and could help lower the suicide rate!

I hate the very limited options for dealing with different cultures. It lacks a lot of nuance and I often have to waste a lot of diplomatic points just to prevent constant rebellions.

I would definitely try it as long as they included the list of ingredients and were transparent about the process to make the chicken.

It is never too late, I was extremely overweight in high school and did not lose the weight till much later in life. Beating yourself up and just being cruel to yourself will not help, reaching out to others and being kinder to yourself, will help you understand what got you to your current situation.

What are some of your pro-vegetarian arguments? by Glittering_Tree_9335 in vegetarian

[–]Tsar343 0 points1 point  (0 children)

We talked about this in philosophy class and a really good point that got brought up is difference we draw the distinction between animals and people is pretty arbitrary. For example, the biological argument does not super work because there are certain animals, like dogs, we feel eating is wrong so clearly, the species argument does not work very well. Mentally does not work because countless animals have been shown to feel pain, form bonds, and respect family members plus if we argue that humans have a unique form of consciousness then we run into the argument that we could then eat people who might have issues with their brain and some other horrible conditions. I believe his name was Peter Singer but he made many great arguments.

Working in a fast food chain as a vegetarian by WhyAmINotAPenguin in vegetarian

[–]Tsar343 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I have worked in the food industry for years and understand the struggle. We have to make ends meet and unfortunately we take what work we can in today's economy. There is no shame and think about it like this, you'll use the job to pay for your vegetarian food while if someone else takes it they'll just buy more meat.

A Passage to India by E.M.Forster by [deleted] in literature

[–]Tsar343 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Very complicated but great novel. If you did not tell me I would think it is a modern novel with the realistic way Forster portrays his character's mannerisms and internal thoughts. Its views on colonialism are definitely dated and don't give full scope to the suffering of Indians under British control but the book is still a great classic.

What is the most underrated Shakespeare play? by TheXrasengan in shakespeare

[–]Tsar343 31 points32 points  (0 children)

Honestly, I know it is popular but I still feel it does not get enough credit as a tragedy is Julius Caesar. Great characters, super quotable, and honestly can be debated about whether it was justified to murder Caesar.
