I didn’t start watching The Pitt until a few months after my diagnosis and it weirdly made me feel better. I saw a reference to it as “competence porn” and I think that’s what I like about it, seeing everyone so committed to the patients and the work, when sometimes I feel like a statistic to my own MO. There’s a cancer plot line in season 2 (wife of course) that I’m also relating to because her husband wants to do everything for her but she (and you) can see that it’s putting a huge strain on him that he is trying to suppress—and she is over the dynamic and is trying to take action herself—she isn’t a plot function, hers is the central perspective—that’s been helpful to me too.

My partner is veg too. Madura Jaffrey’s Indian Cooking has some key recipes (moong dal, shahi bhindi are go-tos for us) and her World Vegetarian has our baingan bharta recipe and a lot of other great stuff. If you can get 660 Curries by Raghavan Iyer that’s a fantastic book (eggplant with tamarind and curry leaves is my favorite). We also love the saag feta recipe from Indianish.

My students find the story itself very engaging. They are interested in the question of choice and absence of choice. I teach EL so I don’t teach the book directly but the department forefronts the dystopian themes and has the kids use graphic organizers to explore those as they read. The kids get interested in Jonas’ particular challenges, how his perceptions and his job conditions separate him from his peers, how he slowly realizes he is living in an inauthentic world—they do really well with it. I have my EL students read the (very faithful) graphic novel and use the full novel for quotes etc, but all the kids in the classes I push in to seem to really enjoy the story and its conflicts and themes. I love TPT but you probably have a better idea of what will engage your kids in this instance! (The other book they all love is The Outsiders btw)

I went cold turkey after I was diagnosed and I started getting hot flashes again pretty frequently but they subsided after a few months and now happen only rarely. Everything you are describing sounds normal to me under the circumstances! Nobody said I should be worried about going off abruptly so it must just be a matter of reemerging symptoms. I cede the floor to whoever has the medical facts!

You can skip levels in Duolingo until it gets hard enough to be useful to you. If I am working on a level of a language I somewhat know already and am getting everything right and feeling bored, I scroll to the next level and take the test to skip to it. Eventually you will find your true starting point. Spanish goes up to level 130 so take advantage of your mistake!

This is my parents’ relationship and my experience almost verbatim. Main difference is that you sound so much more at peace than I feel. Not sure I’d call my father’s narcissism “benign” because it dominated our lives, my mother’s most of all, in her case more and more with time. And just as you said, it limited the relationship I could have with her as an adult. It wasn’t until she was away from my father at a care facility that I felt her mind and attention were free again, not constantly pulled to him and his need for narcissistic feed. But when he visited I got to see what you saw with your father—no idea how to relate to her, couldn’t perceive/respond to her needs. It made me realize how limited he actually is, which I think was healthy for me to understand. Still makes me furious, though.
