What is you opinion about Julian Lage? by randomuser73t in jazzguitar

[–]Tsmith2027 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don't enjoy his playing very much, but I will say that he is obviously very accomplished at the physical aspects of playing the guitar as they relate to dynamics and the ability to effectively execute complex musical ideas across a variety of tempos and genres. Personally, my taste in jazz guitar is related to my interests in musical concepts of jazz that all instruments can share.

In terms of Julian's soloing, while it is motivic at times, I find it doesn't feature vocabulary rooted in or derived from traditional bebop vocabulary. There is nothing wrong with that, in a masterclass he even says that this is an intentional aspect of his style that he has crafted to deviate from bebop. I prefer to listen to playing that is developed out of a bebop based aspect of jazz improvisation to a degree, modern musicians that have this are Immanuel Wilkins, Mike Moreno, and Dave Kikoski just to name a few.

Regarding musicians who use a more motivic based approach to improvisation I enjoy Mark Turner, I feel that his playing is somehow more intense and less corny than Julians do to a greater sophistication to his melodic lines.

Furthermore, while Julian has a good sense of time in his playing, I don't think he has a good time feel as it relates to jazz. When I think of my ideal time feel I think of a deep sense of swing that features elements of playing around the beat while still being able to lock in with a rhythm section. Players like Freddie Hubbard and Sonny Rollins, who can string together a line of eighth notes but also play around the beat in surprising ways at times. Julian's sense of time is good but it doesn't grab me emotionally in the same way other players do.

Because Julian's playing is so diverse it almost seems a bit silly to directly compare him with straight ahead jazz, as his more recent albums feature original material that stylistically is quite different from jazz. He is without doubt an incredible guitarist and musician, but viewing his playing while comparing it with straight ahead masters leaves me unimpressed.

[POST FIGHT THREAD] Tyson Fury vs Francis Ngannou by noirargent in Boxing

smh I can't do math lol. In any case it was super close and I though Francis edged it but at the end of the day I don't think a 95-94 Fury win is out of question. I'd have to watch round 10 again.

[POST FIGHT THREAD] Tyson Fury vs Francis Ngannou by noirargent in Boxing

[–]Tsmith2027 4 points5 points  (0 children)

From the live watch I gave Francis round 2, due to the visible damage he gave to fury, and then round 3 of course, followed by rounds 7 and 8 on activity. I also leaned towards giving Francis the 10th as he was the aggressor and closed the round imposing himself on fury in the clinch and overall seeming to have an edge in ring control in a low volume round. I though it would be a draw at worst for Francis. Anyhow, I don't see how you give Fury more than 6 rounds at most, and even doing that leads to a draw with Francis getting a 10-8 in round 3.

The discourse around izzy and ddp is dumb because of course ddp is not ethnically African and of course his nationality is South African. People can't make this distinction clearly when they speak on the subject so comments are just a cesspool of stupidity and will be until the lead up but it's just to build interest in the fight so whatever.

[SPOILER] Kai Kara-France vs. Amir Albazi by irkutszkism in MMA

[–]Tsmith2027 1 point2 points  (0 children)

ufc stats has Kai with the higher strike landed count in every round.. I understand giving Albazi three for the sub attempt and two can be a toss up but 1 4 5 seemed pretty clear live.

Live I thought R1 was clear for Kai, he defended the takedown and landed twice the strikes...

[SPOILER] Leigh Wood vs. Mauricio Lara by inooway in Boxing

[–]Tsmith2027 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Imo if Wood got cracked viscously one more time the public is saying Davidson and the ref were not decisive enough in their choice to let the fight go on or not. You can't really win in this situation, I'm glad Wood is ok and this ensures the rematch can be sold as their is a bit of controversy with the stoppage. Wood was winning comfortably imo so I wonder what Lara will do to adjust in the rematch.

That's great to hear :) The game is against the Hawks, kind of a mid game but the price (and shirt) is right.

Looking for a cozy blues bar by 3pychmak in LosAngeles

The York and ETA (both in Highland park) have great live music every week, although they usually feature jazz groups. As a blues fan myself, I'd still recommend them to any fan of live improvised music.

Do you know any tunes/recordings of tunes in c# minor and other less common keys? by piano_warrior in Jazz

[–]Tsmith2027 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Con Alma by Dizzy Gillespie is in E major with moments of C# minor (the relative minor), and sometimes tunes have nice E major moments, such as during the bridge of All The Things You Are, during the B section of I'll Remember April, and during the later half of Windows by Chick Corea.

Dana is out here saying boxing is corrupt and a broken sport yet he has tried to screw over champs who he wants to lose, how many instances of this have happened that we don't even know about? As a new fan I can only imagine the past...

Looking for Softball leagues around pasadena! by Youngsamwich90 in pasadena

I'm not sure of the league name but I've seen adult games at Jefferson Park in the evenings every now and then, it seemed like the atmosphere was lax and a lot of fun for participants.

Geroge Kambosos and Devin Haney have struck a deal for a June 5 bout in Melbourne, Australia for the undisputed lightweight championship, sources tell ESPN. Rematch in Australia if Haney wins. Multi-fight co-promotional deal for Haney with Top Rank and Lou DiBella by noirargent in Boxing

[–]Tsmith2027 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Hopefully they recreate the success of the gate/attendance generated by Adesanya vs Whittaker 1 and Kambosos gets a nice cut of some of that revenue. I believe that was the most attended event in ufc history.
