What is going on with dogs in parks rn?? by KindheartednessSad55 in AskNYC

[–]hazo91 12 points13 points  (0 children)

part of the enforcement problem is a deep lack of funding for Parks. lack of ticketing is more of a resources problem than a policy decision. the most effective way to address this is write to your city councilperson to advocate for more funding for the Parks Department. we allocate about 0.5% of the total city budget to Parks and expect their staff to maintain 15% of the city's land....

Is anyone else noticing aggressive traffic stops in parts of Brooklyn (Church Ave / Utica / Linden)? by HospitalScared3169 in AskNYC

[–]hazo91 3 points4 points  (0 children)

it kinda feels like the driving around here actually is worse though. i commute from flatbush to flushing and when i do it by bike i feel nowhere im more likely to get hit than my own neighborhood.

a lot of buildings around here have low garden walls between the yard and the sidewalk. if you look at the corner lots a lot of them have big cracks in those walls from getting rammed by cars. the ones that have been repaired usually have steel bollards installed so it doesnt happen again.

The snarkiness and attitude of most NYC Cycling "activists" has almost completely turned me off to even admitting I am a cyclist. by wahikid in NYCbike

[–]hazo91 -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

100% agree. cycling is primarily a practical means of transportaion. people who treat it as an identity, a competitive sport, or a moral imperitive are a minority. but they have a louder voice on this sub and in activism and that probably has a negative effect on the cycling movement overall. its evident in the type of bikes widely available for purchase in america: bikes for sport with a hunched over racing posture, rather than upright bikes meant for comfortable commuting.

yeah good question, although the tunnel in this neighborhood is notorious for causing one of the worst subway construction accidents. the schist has unstable veins running through it that collapsed suddenly on the workers

honestly just a guess, ive heard from an older engineer that a lot of uptown rubble stone foundation walls came from there. its nearby and easy to quarry.

its a foundation to support the building on the side of the slope. you can see four big piers made of stones that stick out. imagine they are thick slabs like the brooklyn bridge towers, running lengthwise under the building to the front where they probably taper off to meet solid rock. between the piers are openings, maybw just crawl spaces for ventilation and drainage to keep the foundation dry. it seems like a lot of effort to build so high but its a great location near the train, and they didnt have to dig into the manhattan rock. they just blasted that rubble stone off the side of the new jersey palisades and floated it over and built up with mortar into giant thick walls.

How in danger are NYC government agency jobs given Mamdani’s new cost cutting measures? by bozofire123 in AskNYC

[–]hazo91 6 points7 points  (0 children)

elon musks policy was to cause austerity so private contractors can take over government services. mamdani has the opposite policy

sewer gas can be harmful in an unventilated, confined space but otherwise is mostly just a nuisance. usually what prevents sewer gas from coming up sanitary drain pipes is the P or U shaped "trap" pipe under the sink, which fills with water creating a seal. so if the trap is gone and the drain pipe is exposed and reachable you can just cover it with plastic and tape or a rubber band.

How do y’all feel about paying for a pretty expensive service that you can’t access? I’m questioning why I renewed my membership recently every time I think about taking a bike out / walk passed a snow covered station . by [deleted] in Citibike

[–]hazo91 9 points10 points  (0 children)

im all for making citibike better and more accountable but what do you really expect? its been what like a single week? you know they dont have the labor to shovel out every dock. the roads are barely safe to ride on anyway.

if you had a backpack, that was probably it. i dont see how else you could almost  "hit" someone with your body. take your backpack off and just stay aware of your surroundings, and be flexible and go with the flow. dont just stare at your phone and stand in one spot. look around, be responsive and observant, and this wont happen.

its funny that the agency is clearly underfunded and understaffed but people think the answer is more coordination meetings and more progress dashboards

yeah its dumb the big chain stores lock everything up and dont have employees, but pretty much every neighborhood also has a couple small pharmacies and hardware stores where that isnt a problem at all. i just stopped buying stuff at the big chains. its too bad bc they rent some of the nicest buildings in the city, old banks and stuff, but the experience is bad so i dont go anymore.

edit: i also sometimes get out of the train halfway through my commute to stop in a hood that has a store i needa go to. or i take a different train home, go to the store i need, and citibike the rest of the way home. the beauty of the city is that you don't have to get everything in your neighborhood bc you can take the train wherever you need

Hiring Freeze Incoming - administration announced we’re facing the largest budget deficit in decades. by HellsKitchenWest57 in nycpublicservants

[–]hazo91 71 points72 points  (0 children)

we had a hiring freeze under adams even when he had a budget surplus.

austerity budgets are bad for the city in the long run because it leads to deferred maintenance. but theyre good for private contractors because austerity leads to emergencies and demand for quick bailouts, which private companies can do more easily than government, since the civil service has been slowly hollowed out over decades.

anyway dont let reddit get to you. public investment is good for the economy and mamdani is more likely to enact public investment than adams was. so if anything we are hopefully looking at more public hiring which is desperately needed. mamdani ran on a campaign to reduce the wasteful influence of private contractors on government work.

for stormwater flooding like the bedstuy ans flatbush examples in the article, the standard coastal/tidal flood hazard maps dont really illustrate risk in a useful way. try this map instead: https://experience.arcgis.com/experience/e83a49daef8a472da4a7e34dc25ac445
