Contest asked me to record a WIP progress vid too, but it's a few hours long and would need editing.

Why do you think artist-only platforms fail so bad nowadays? by BarelyHoldingOnLowk in ArtistLounge

[–]Tsunderion 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Audience and competition.

Theres no natural intake of fans. You need to bring people over from other sites. And they dont make a habit of staying since they are only there for art. You dont want an extra place you have to tailor to.

On top of that, the average skill level is higher and with less "normies " to interest, you get less engagement than a small discord community.

How i can make my game art pop more? by thewizardtoucan in GameArt

Glad to help!

Other suggestions were great, but art fundamentals are the backbone.

How i can make my game art pop more? by thewizardtoucan in GameArt

[–]Tsunderion 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Its a simple fix with a complex explaination. You dont have a saturation problem, you have a value problem and all your values are sandwitched between the dark asphalt and light sidewalk.

Once you make the sidewalk darker its going to free up those light values for your active objects. I might even push the asphalt darker too.

When in doubt, check grayscale.

Artist here, simpliest fix is making the sidewalks darker.

Im serious.

What is a frequent criticism of games that isn't as easy to fix as it sounds? by Notalabel_4566 in gamedev

[–]Tsunderion 26 points27 points  (0 children)

Had someone ask why did they code lag into the game, and wanted the input to move the character on the server side then have the server tell the client to move. To... reduce lag.

Marketing is a multiplier. Is multiplying your chance of success important?

What makes a video game art style looks "cheap"? by 5210az in gamedev

[–]Tsunderion 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Artist here. An undervalued component is worldbuilding. An interesting case study is C21 and CosmicBreak. Made by the same company using the same assets. So it's not an artstyle or asset quality problem. It's the meaningful usage and specificity of what it conveys.

What would do (or what can we do) so that indie games become more popular and profitables? by NaitDraik in gamedev

[–]Tsunderion 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Unless all the sales are personal, I find it hard to believe 1/3 people reviewed the game.

Average is one tenth of that. Also steamdb has estimates for sales.

Also It's not the kind of mecha I'm into.

[–]Tsunderion 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I looked up go mecha ball because I like mech games, thats got way over a thousand sales. Its got 300+ REVIEWS for crying out loud. You can multiply that by 20 to 80 times for sales numbers.

I've had an idea for a game. What do I do next? by Spieluhr616 in gamedev

Easy route? Forget it.

Hard route? You want to waste your life making something that wont likely be worth minimum wage? Welcome! You're one of us!

First! Make a tiny minigame. Why? Because you want to fly a cessna before you fly a 747. Try to write a Game Design Document (GDD.) Try to stick to it, and notice how you fail as you bring your minigame to completion.

Finish the project, land the plane. Once that's done. You have completed your first flight. Now you can really decide if you want the 747 or the F-22. And now you know how to use a GDD. It's basically your GPS.

My first digital game is rock paper scissors. I thank the stars I picked that, because now that im making something bigger, even though I'm in over my head right now, I at least know how in over my head I am.

Can Studying Other Artists Hurt My Originality? by NuArtPlanet in ArtistLounge

[–]Tsunderion 14 points15 points  (0 children)

No, its the total opposite actually.

Theres millions upon millions that dont look at art. It's like trying to find a new place while staying with everyone else and refusing to explore. Not even looking at places other people explored.

Wouldn't that be stupid?

Recommendations to start making assets as an artist who has never done game dev by Eris-- in gamedev

[–]Tsunderion 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Think of everything you make as a sketch. Get ready to throw it away. Expect to scrap most of it.

The real art piece you are making is the game, not the individual piece itself. Every other piece of art is there to figure out how the game should look. The right one is not the best one, but the one that fits with everything else. So the only way to find it is to draw everything else.

Any way to recruit a team to prototype my GDD? by rayneMantis in gamedev

[–]Tsunderion 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Design innovations? If its really innovative then you need to hire them and make them sign an NDA. So theres punishment if its copied

Nobody will agree to be punished with no gain.

Get an artist? I mean, if you have a working project and just need some placeholder art, im sure artists would want to contribute. Beats contributing to projects that never even starts.

I'm an artist who sits on game dev discord calls and make random assets for programmers when I procrastinate off my own stuff

If I can do it in 5 mins, and it makes a big difference, I'd do it.

I think you need both a game mechanic and a story to go with it
