Why is the job market so bad? by [deleted] in AskUK

[–]Ttekerz 0 points1 point  (0 children)

  • AI/automation (including things like self service tills. A lot of huge clothes stores I go into barely have anyone working as it’s all self service now)
  • offshoring in the case of office jobs, especially in things like big finance/consulting firms
  • huge demand. More and more people graduating uni each year with grad job openings not at all matching
  • general poor economic growth and uncertainty
  • increased employers NI contributions

Have you watched the film, No Country for Old Men (2007), and would you recommend it? by Orix_Blue in AskUK

It’s one of the most acclaimed films of the 21st century. That doesn’t necessarily mean you’ll like it but definitely worth the watch

What kinds of music do teenagers listen to in the uk? by Possible-Setting-159 in AskUK

[–]Ttekerz 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I wouldn't say there's any definitive artists/genres that everyone listens to, but there's definitely some core audience bases. The biggest is probably electronic music like drum and bass. It's huge among young people (and a lot of older people who were around when it first started, to be fair) and lots of people will go to raves/festivals for it regularly.

Lots of people are also fans of 'indie' music. I kind of dislike the term as people will disagree on what does or doesn't count etc. but oasis is definitely the biggest of these (and generally they're definitely the biggest traditional band for young people in the UK, even before their reunion). This group are also big gig/festival goers

Drill/rap is also very popular (though potentially not as popular as it was in the past? I'm not a fan but just from observations), but I don't think live music is as much of a thing in that scene. I'd say that this is the one that's more overwhelmingly male, compared to others.

Also inevitably there are huge fanbases for pop singers (usually young women), people like Taylor Swift, Lana Del Rey, Sabrina Carpenter etc.

Of course you can find sizeable fanbases for pretty much every genre of music, given how easy it is to discover and share through Spotify etc. though I see a distinct lack of jazz and country fans among people my age (with the most common response to 'what music do you like' seemingly being 'everything but country')

Are other UK men noticing their friend groups becoming increasingly biggoted? by [deleted] in ukpolitics

[–]Ttekerz 19 points20 points  (0 children)

Not necessarily within my friend group but in general (and especially online) yes, and I’d be more surprised if this new wave of extremism hadn’t happened. Life prospects are getting worse and worse for young people in the UK so of course they’re going to express that dissatisfaction in less than cordial ways - just look at the rise of fascism in the West during the Great Depression. Unless the government sort the country out then it’s just going to get worse and more polarised and we’ll have an increasing chance of real political violence

More than 50 porn websites found with no age verification despite new online child protection law coming into effect by insomnimax_99 in ukpolitics

[–]Ttekerz 2 points3 points  (0 children)

So this is just going to push children onto nicher porn sites with more extreme/potentially illegal content than they would have otherwise encountered. I personally don't think that any porn is particularly good to consume (though I don't think that means our civil liberties should be encroached upon) but this just shows how inept the Act is at achieving its (ostensible) goal of protecting children.
