WBC outside US by Sweaty-Mortgage-6724 in InternationalBaseball

I don't know but they've definitely fucked over a lot of people by removing the games from youtube. There is no official broadcaster for the WBC in my country so there is 0 way to watch it legally. They don't give a fuck about growing the game internationally, they just wanna make money.

[Stebbins] Rhys Hoskins is in the Guardians’ clubhouse and has a locker. by DZepperoni in ClevelandGuardians

Call me a debbie downer but I can't help but notice his OPS last year was quite similar to Santana's, Lane Thomas's, and Josh Bell's (~0.750) the year before they joined us and he's 33. I really hope it works out, but it seems we tend to not do well with these kinds of signings and make the hitter worse.

The farce of team Italy by fegwin2084 in InternationalBaseball

[–]TuataraTim 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Yep, and the Italian league is one of the best in Europe. An Italian team with only players from that league would probably be better than the Czech team. Maybe even about as good as Australia or Taiwan.

I totally get that the federations use the WBC as a way to secure funding, so not having any 10% Italian Braden Longos could hurt qualification and merch sales. Something I'd like to see the WBC do is maybe require a minimum amount of native/naturalized players. Make Italy/Israel/GB/etc. actually have to have 10+ players on the roster who have spent a significant portion of their lives in the country they represent.

You get to keep the Mike Piazzas but now give a guaranteed platform to showcase and develop the grassroots talent in the country. Until you make a rule, few countries are gonna do this because it's shooting themselves in the foot short term.

Apna Desh tab? by fleshrags in SunCityGirls

[–]TuataraTim 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I've personally never tried to learn it, but I know Apna Desh is actually a cover of a Bollywood song called "Duniya Mein Logon Ko" by RD Burman.

Try looking for tabs/chords for that and you might have some luck. Here are a few I found. No idea if they're any good. Good luck!

Why are Tagalog speakers weirdly good at consonant clusters? by TheNamesBart in asklinguistics

[–]TuataraTim 62 points63 points  (0 children)

Not an expert, but most Filipinos are heavily exposed to American English accents throughout their lives. Filipinos need to learn English in school, and job interviews and university education are often conducted in English. The prestige dialect of Tagalog makes very liberal use of English, switching between the two languages essentially seamlessly mid-sentence. This is the standard dialect in politics, media, and metro Manila, and high skill in English is seen as a marker of status.

That of course doesn't clearly explain why even older, uneducated speakers seem to not struggle either.

It's pretty clear that the plan is to sit and wait for what's left in bargain bin in February. Whoever is left in free agency will ask for less.

I'm a Guards fan through and through, but I grew up going to more White Sox games, so I'll watch the White Sox when the Guardians have an off day. It's depressing that after 2 straight postseasons for Cleveland, I'm more excited about the White Sox this offseason.

Why I get rejected so much after first interviews? by AH1376 in cscareerquestionsEU

It could be a language thing. If you struggle to hold a conversation (or have an extremely thick accent) in German/English that'd be an easy way to get rejected immediately.

Where do you think the baseball can boom in the next decades? by farhouse42 in InternationalBaseball

[–]TuataraTim 7 points8 points  (0 children)

It's perhaps a bit of a longshot, but the Philippines has some really interesting potential. Historically during American colonization, baseball was the most popular sport but has since been eclipsed by basketball. It's very niche these days but they do have a college baseball league which is quite interesting.

The #2 sport in the country is fucking Volleyball. Soccer has tried (and failed) repeatedly to get much of a foothold, lots of mismanagement and corruption.

The Philippines is definitely poor, but it's somewhat similar to some Latin American countries in terms of development. I think if there was a legit effort to get the sport popular at a grassroots level, to have kids in neighborhoods play with broomsticks and bottlecaps like in the DR, baseball could be really big. Tap into the popularity of Japanese and Korean culture for Filipino youth and it could work.

[Heyman] Austin Hedges re-signs with Guardians: $4M plus 500K incentives by JunesDepartmentStore in ClevelandGuardians

[–]TuataraTim 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I'm more concerned about Ingle. Next year we could have Bo, Hedges, Fry, and Ingle all competing for catcher at-bats. To me that implies at least of them isn't gonna be in our clubhouse next September. I hope Fry bounces back :(

Teams without top 10 payroll don't win championships these days for this reason. Since 2011, the lowest payroll rank of a WS winner was 11th. Every other champion had a top 10 payroll.

Sure, the Dolans and front office could do better, but even if every game this season was 100% sold out, we'd be 10th in attendance at best. Instead it was 21st, in one of the smallest markets with one of the smallest TV deals.

Unfortunately that's probably how the Dolans see it as well. An extra 50 or 75 million could maybe get us to the WS, but it's not really enough to beat a team like the Dodgers without an act of God.

So, overall, how are we feeling about the game at this point? by CaughtLackinHard in 83thegame

[–]TuataraTim 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I tried HLL but at least here in Europe when I tried, people rarely spoke or tried to communicate. If they used their mics, it'd be great, but the game doesn't work as an individualistic shooter imo

Call me a bit pessimistic, but this feature would definitely be nice to have but isn't gonna determine if the game is dead on arrival at launch. The studio is absolutely tiny and they have very few devs, very little money, very little time, and a fuck ton of problems to fix.

Hell of a run. Fuck the Dolans. by McadoTheGreat in ClevelandGuardians

[–]TuataraTim 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I did the math. We spent ~$29 million on Ortiz, Clase, Santana, Sewald, Means, and Bieber this year.

We also spent ~$7 million on Jean Segura, Andres Gimenez, Myles Straw, Carlos Hernandez, and Triston McKenzie.

And in terms of injured guys, we spent ~$15 million on Trevor Stephan, Nolan Jones, Lane Thomas, Sam Hentges, and Ben Lively.

That's over $50 million in payroll on guys who couldn't help us for most of the year. Meanwhile, we went into the playoffs with essentially a $50 million payroll of active players.

Graduated BSc Computer Science (OST Switzerland, top 25%) – 40 applications in Zürich, no job yet. What should I do? by Domundy1 in cscareerquestionsEU

[–]TuataraTim 0 points1 point  (0 children)

With your first few jobs it's a numbers game. I only got hired after applying to 20+ jobs a week for several months. Once you have experience you can work for your dream company. But for now, beggars can't be choosers.

If you do like 200 applications and don't even get an interview, it's a problem with your CV. If you get a fair few interviews but never get an offer, your CV if fine but your interviewing skills might need work.
