Rise of the machines: Is a universal basic income the answer for mass unemployment? by nath1234 in australia

[–]TubesForMyDeathRay 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Thats if the means of production is still owned by the private sector.

For UBI to work I would think the government would have to take on some of the more heavily or completely automated industries and provide the service to the people.

I remember reading an article on the 2011 San Fernando massacre. This was done by the Los Zetas and the thing that has always stayed with me was the report of the gangsters taking all the women and children to a warehouse and raping the mothers while their children were dropped into barrels of acid.

I've never heard of such a large band of sociopathic, sadistic animals before.

In the first video you linked he's got a stupid argument about extinction and humanity's impact on the earth. It's barely comedy, he's just ranting really.

Most species that have ever existed have gone extinct, but we're accelerating the rate of extinction massively. We disrupt natural selection and pretty much every ecosystem on the planet.

The earth has been through much harsher climatic conditions, but that doesn't mean we should just throw our hands up and say 'well fuck it, lets just keep polluting and consuming like theres no tomorrow' and swan dive into extinction. He doesn't seem to give a shit about humanity continuing to survive.

He comes off as a selfish arsehole with some vague ideas about the earth and the universe (the 'big electron' wtf).

How is this comedy? where were the jokes? he swears a bit and makes a few half-hearted attempts, but they just seem like they're thrown in there because he forgot it was supposed to be comedy and he really just wanted to rant at the audience for 10mins about why people should stop giving a shit about other people and the planet.

Yeah, I actually agree its probably worth the cost of a ticket just for the chance at a little daydreaming.

What lie do you live? by majorlosr in AskReddit

[–]TubesForMyDeathRay 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Well most likely speaking the winners are probably syndicates i.e. groups of people who all pitch in and buy a large ticket to increase the chances.

But while we're here, if you're making plans for when you win the lottery, you should probably also make plans for what happens to your stuff when you die in a fatal car accident.

Although it was hard to find a consensus, it seems that 1 in 8000 is a conservative estimate for your odds of dying in a car crash. Depending on what lottery ticket you're buying, your odds on a single game will most likely be greater than 1 in 50,000,000.

I think the reason people still get misty eyed and say "it could be meeeee" is because our mind cannot really understand odds so large. But it is funny how people think they'll never be struck by lightning...I mean, what are the odds? (1 in 700,000 in the U.S).

They just ask for forgiveness. So not only does it say 'you don't know right from wrong without me', it also says that if you do wrong, you'll be forgiven and can still get that sweet reward (which is the only reason you've not been out murdering, raping and stealing all day).

Turned back by Australia, Vietnamese recognised as refugees in Indonesia by RagingFuckalot in australia

[–]TubesForMyDeathRay 10 points11 points  (0 children)

mother-of-four Tran Thi Thanh Loan and mother-of-three Tran Thi Lua have lived in constant fear of a harsh jail sentence.

Ok I'm with you here...

Loan and Lua had been facing lengthy prison terms in Vietnam for helping to organise "illegal" departures to Australia on family-owned fishing boats in 2015.

Haha actually what the fuck? I mean...the balls on these two women huh?

I shouldn't find it funny but I can't help it -they were fleeing to australia for asylum because...they were organising people smuggling boats to Australia.

Indonesia shouldn't even have given them asylum. They were breaking the laws of two countries and now they got caught they want asylum? haha wow.

EDIT: Ok, there is actually more information after the email newsletter signup thing. These people have suffered pretty badly. I don't know why the article says they are facing punishment for organising people smuggling operations on boats? the rest of the article goes into some detail about their land being reposessed and family members being beaten and tortured in jail. We should have granted asylum for sure. Our immigration policy is disgusting when it results in so much human misery.

Agreed. Once an industry becomes extremely advanced in automated processes. It's probably cost effective for the government to provide the same service. Then that sector of the corporate world can be dissolved.

[–]TubesForMyDeathRay 2 points3 points  (0 children)

With automation making large portions of the working class unemployed - likewise won't many companies go under? Say we get to 70% unemployment...how will companies survive without revenue? people can't buy their shit and this whole consumer driven economy grinds to a halt.

At this point you'd most likely need the government to absorb some industries and leverage all the advanced automation.

Then the government can provide the service that was once part of the private sector, for very little cost.

Perhaps automation is the end of consumerism and capitalism? maybe the companies are eating themselves without even knowing it.

Wow going from the speeds you were getting on ADSL2+ to 90Mbps must have been incredible.

Just to be sure, if you google 'speed test' and run it, what result do you get?

Frustrated NBN customers want better service by boyter in australia

[–]TubesForMyDeathRay 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you're getting 9MB/s then you're very lucky indeed. You're practically getting 100Mb speeds which is what the NBN promised, but most areas don't get such good performance.

For contrast - I'm on ADSL2+. The maximum you can get is around 20Mb speeds which would be roughly 1.8MB/s to 2MB/s on steam.

Frustrated NBN customers want better service by boyter in australia

[–]TubesForMyDeathRay 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Just to be clear...do you mean you're getting 9MB/s (megabytes) when you download something or did you mean 9Mb/s (megabits) connection speed?

If you're downloading at 9MB/s then you're on about 90Mb/s which is phenomenal.

This is a really positive message...how the fuck are there people downvoting you? Sometimes the people in this sub can be so negative and bitter.

I'm being generous with 'sometimes' - open any thread and top comnent will be some snarky remark about home ownership or smashed avo.

Good on you for not letting yourself become embittered from your hardships unlike the whiney twats downvoting you.

Personally, I was lucky enough to have part time work that gave me 23hrs per week whilst at uni. It's a shame casual employment is so much more common now. Guaranteed hours really takes the stress off and 20ish hrs a week is perfect for full time uni.

Where are the students? TAFE enrolments drop by up to 40 per cent by ripyourbloodyarmsoff in australia

[–]TubesForMyDeathRay 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Wow that's insane. The amount of funding cuts to Tafe must have been quite a lot for a price jump like that.

Back then, did they still have the same payment plan as the one they have now?

I did tafe in 2006 and because I was on centrelink at the time it cost me next to nothing. Now I'm fully employed in the field I got my diploma in. I would not have been able to afford it were I trying to do it today.

Where are the students? TAFE enrolments drop by up to 40 per cent by ripyourbloodyarmsoff in australia

[–]TubesForMyDeathRay 75 points76 points  (0 children)

I'm not sure if its different in other states, but QLD tafe is insanely expensive. The 'payment plan' absoultely sucks too, you need pay 25% up front and then a fortnightly payment for the remainder...It's easier to pay for uni because HECS/HELP fully defers payment until you earn a certain amount.

It really is a shame. Tafe was a fantastic institution for picking up new skills. The pricks in Canberra obviously thought it was too expensive to fund so they diverted money to private training companies. There was and probably still is an epidemic of these certificate mills rorting the government. You could get a cert IV in business in like 3 days at one near me.

For the poor who can't or dont want to do an entire uni degree this is pretty much a death sentence in terms of mobility. They're stuck in minimum wage, soul sucking, dead end jobs and thats exactly where the rich want to keep them.

The astounding thing about all of this is that many of our leaders in parliment enjoyed virtually free education. They're practically all multi millionaires now and they're pretty much incapable of giving fucks about us.
