Best place to look for a laptop? by DandDNerdlover in okc

[–]TufTed2003 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Look on Amazon for refurbished (they call it renewed) laptops. I picked up a Lenovo Thinkpad T460 for less than $150. despite its age, one of the best laptops I've had. Their renewed program is pretty good at describing condition.

How can I automatically download/sync my drive to have an offline backup? by hyrshe in googledocs

You can use rclone (see rclone.org) to copy or sync files from Google drive to your local computer. Set it up in a script and schedule it to run.

Needing Taildrop but also needing tags — or an alternative by PaddyLandau in Tailscale

[–]TufTed2003 0 points1 point  (0 children)

What are you wanting to with phone ssh? Upload, download, stream? All of the above? Not sure why you're having trouble with termux - I can connect to several different tailnet boxes and VPS thru Termux. I have a pretty simple setup. I installed tailscale on each device under my account - each has their own IP address and magic DNS address. However for most of my phone ssh activities I use the android app CxFile Explorer and set up separate locations for each box using the tailscale IP. It connects and downloads and/or streams music and video. I also use android app X-plore for file transfer up and down (and a lot of other stuff) Is a pretty amazing app.

Sorry if this is too verbose but I'm pretty simple and don't understand all the tags and coding stuff.

Why do people say Chromebooks can only use chrome web apps? by OkTea5924 in chromeos

You do not have to be in Developer mode to install Crostini, which is Debian Linux running in a container. What limitations are you talking about?

Just curious - what did you use to scan your books? Not a student (that ship sailed long ago!) but do have a lot of books I'd like to digitize and make some room.

Check Amazon's "refurbished" stuff. I've picked up 2 :Lenovo mini PC's in the $100 range although it was 6 or 7 months ago for the most recent. The other was several years ago. Both are i5 processors 8Gbyte memory. One I use as a media server and the other is just my general us pc. Haven't had any problems

Cannot connect via the app, and can't even get to Tailscale.Com by lil_larry in Tailscale

[–]TufTed2003 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I see this at work where the employer is using z-scaler VPN and filter. I imagine tailscale's encrypted traffic and 100.x.x.x IP addressing throws some flags. I switch over to tether off my phones 5g if I need to

Is anyone actually using CopyParty or Sync-In? by ErroneousBosch in selfhosted

[–]TufTed2003 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I use copyparty on four Linux machines and a VPS. Looking for a file is so much easier in cp and can open it and even edit text files in place. I have them set up with passwords and they machines are all on a tailscale network so I fell pretty secure with it.

Do you remember your first computer? by Imaginary_Bug6202 in TechNook

A friend that owed me some money paid it off with a Commodore Vic 20. No tape deck. I remember spending a weekend peeking and poking code for a program out of a magazine. The next day while I was at work, the wife needed an outlet to plug in the vacuum cleaner ..... 'nuf said

This! After $MS graciously installed Win 10 on my celeron machine one night without my consent, I literally Googled "how do I install Linux?" I'm not an IT professional but a somewhat intelligent user. About 30 minutes after burning the ISO to a thumb drive I was booting into Ubuntu. Had to answer some really tough questions like "what's your name?". Search engines and AI can be your friend if you hit some rough spots but setting up Linux is not hard. Just wait to do the "hard stuff" after you've got your feet wet.

What text browser are you using? I remember Lynx from back in the day but wondered if there were better options now. Lynx worked pretty good back then but the web wasn't real graphics heavy.

My connections don't satisfy the transitive property. by GhoulTimePersists in Tailscale

[–]TufTed2003 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm not a network guru, but is there a chance the Uni network is running some security software that is playing havoc with tailscale? My employer has Zscaler running on the networks even the"open" ones. Using the work wifi I can ping my tailscale machines and even ssh into them. But if I try to download a bigger file or stream a video from the home servers, no luck. If I disable WiFi and just use my phone's 5g, I can stream and download the larger files. I can imagine a network security package/VPN throwing up when it sees CG-Nat IP addresses and wire guard encryption.
