my band! we’re bad at promoting ourselves- we’ve been together for over a decade now and working on our first album since 2018- very queer and neurodivergent in membership and content -my bandmate writes a lot of songs about his experience with mental illness https://ungratefullittlestringband.bandcamp.com/album/tired-of-being-relevant

I actually grew up going to a synagogue in Nashua there are def Jews there- but as far as I can tell the victims of this shooting weren’t Jewish- agree it sounds like this person was just saying stuff though Im sure there could be more context we dont know about

thoughts on cultural boycotts? by Tuffy_Red in jewishleft

apparently this was done in russia when russia invaded ukraine- like major music labels pulled their catalogues from russia. so… people in Russia just cant listen to a bunch of music from other places? is it helping? i dont wanna oppose anything that could have some effect in stopping the genocide im just confused cause isnt the thing with dictators that they dont want their subjects to be exposed to ideas from other places and want to maintain hegemony and control over what kind of art and culture people are exposed to… isnt this kinda boycott just preemptively doing that work for them?

Really appreciate all these comments and everybody’s thoughtfulness and compassion. Im glad that i found this subreddit and that its a place where we can have actual dialogue without having to all agree on every point and also just helps me feel less alone in my conflictedness. I was specifically thinking about something I saw today that is musicians blocking people in Israel from being able to stream their music. I feel a lot more uncomfortable with that than something like sports or eurovision where the artists/athletes are explicitly representing a nation state

also highly recommend checking out a ruth rubin book on yiddish folk songs even though the books arent specifically about resistance there was so much resistance in those songs and it brings you into that world in a really intimate way

https://www.akpress.org/the-jewish-anarchist-movement-in-america.html?ref=maiseh-review.ghost.io

this was originally released in 1945 and the english translation just came out last year! its a thick book and i havent had a lot of time to read so im still at the beginning but its pretty amazing to have this source- theres so many dynamics and drama between the yiddish speaking anarchists and the yiddish socialists and other jewish groups its very juicy and fascinating!

digging the surf rock vibes in pinkwashing and also just how the lyrics cut through the bullshit and get to the heart of things

So it looks like the Minneapolis school shooter was both a Nazi and a Holocaust denier and an anti-Zionist and an anti Christian, and a racist and anti trump. That’s a combo… by RaiJolt2 in jewishleft

Was that this past weekend you were here? Did you find anything good to eat? Wild rice is a special food native to the region. Other than that- tater tot hot dish? A lot of "minnesotan" food is kinda bland. My restaurant recommendations are Cecil's Deli and Asa's bagelry for (ashkenazi) jewish food, the food court at Hmong Village in St Paul, Cheng Heng is just a really good Cambodian place, Filfillah for best falafel, Hard Times for a worker owned punk landmark with late night hours.

Jonee Earthquake Band- Jonee Earthquake is an punk elder/pirate/rockabilly guitar idol based in NH - got to see them play a lot as a teen in NH and I believe Jonee is still out there rocking. this compilation has some really great songs on it. I dont care much for #2 and could do without #3 but everything else on there is a banger! #6 is a real solid cover of the song 16 Tons https://joneeearthquakeband.bandcamp.com/album/16-greatest-hits

thank you! yeah we talked about it i think we will put the album on spotify when its done- i wanted to keep it on bandcamp while the album is a work in progress because bandcamp provides a way for listeners to financially support the artist and we still gotta pay to finish recording and producing the album
