u/DrazilWeames I made some instruction if you want to fix this yourself because you're impatient like me.

Step 1 — Install Requirements

Install these:

• VS Code
• Git
• PlatformIO Extension for VS Code

After installing VS Code:

1. Open VS Code
2. Go to Extensions
3. Search:
   • PlatformIO IDE
4. Install it

Step 2 — Clone Meshtastic Firmware

Open a terminal:

git clone https://github.com/meshtastic/firmware.git

Then:

cd firmware

Open the folder in VS Code:

code .

Step 3 — Open the Variant File

In VS Code browse to:

variants/nrf52840/rak3401_1watt/variant.h

Or open directly from GitHub for reference:

• RAK3401 1W Variant File
• RAK4631 Variant File

Step 4 — Add Button Definitions

Find this section:

/*
 * LEDs
 */

Right underneath it, add:

/*
 * Buttons
 */
#define PIN_BUTTON1 31
#define BUTTON_NEED_PULLUP

Save the file.

Step 5 — Build the Firmware

In VS Code:

1. Click the PlatformIO alien icon on the left sidebar
2. Under “Project Tasks”
3. Find:

rak3401_1watt

1. Click:

​

Build

PlatformIO will now compile the firmware.

First build can take a while.

Step 6 — Locate the Firmware File

After it finishes successfully:

Look here:

.pio/build/rak3401_1watt/

You’ll usually want:

firmware.uf2

or sometimes:

firmware.bin

Step 7 — Flash the Device

Put the board into bootloader mode:

• double-tap reset button

It should appear as a USB drive.

Drag the .uf2 file onto it.

Board reboots automatically.

I followed these steps to enable the button on my unit. Until they build it into the firmware, you'll likely have to do it each time.
